Welcome to Digité’s Release Management Training . In this presentation, I’ll walk you through the concepts related to Release Management module of Digité application.
This is the sequence of topics in which our training session will flow.
This training course is most suitable for project managers and team leads who are basically responsible for planning and execution of release. It is also beneficial for other users of project who are directly or indirectly involved in the release management process.
The pre-requisites for this training are :- You should have gone through trainings covering the Digité UI Introduction, Digité Common System Operations, Digité Workflow, and Project Management . You should have the URL and an account for the Digité sandbox environment for hands-on sessions.
By the end of this Training you should be able to: 1.Understand the concept of Release Management. 2.Understand how Release Management process has been implemented in Digité. 3.Get familiar with features available in the Release Management module of Digité application and should be able to navigate through them.
Now let’s get started with the Training.
Here is a list of Release management topics that we would be covering in this training course. To start with, we will first understand the definition and concept of Release management. Then we will proceed with the implementation and working of Release management in Digité. Finally we will see one example of how to plot release-wise reports.
Let’s understand what is Release management?
Release Management: Release management is the bridge that move assets from development to production . It is defined as a software engineering process intended to oversee the development, testing, deployment and support of software releases. Objective: The main objective of the release management is to preserve the integrity and availability of production systems while deploying new software and hardware.
The diagram above explains the release management process. Release management usually begins in the development cycle with requests for changes or new features. Once the request is approved, the new release is planned. The new design then enters the testing or quality assurance phase, in which the release is built, reviewed, tested and tweaked until it is ultimately accepted as a release candidate. The release then enters the deployment phase, where it is implemented and made available. Once deployed, the release enters a support phase, where bug reports and other issues are collected; this leads to new requests for changes, and the cycle starts all over again.
Digité application facilitates a project-level release management module for robust planning and execution of releases in the projects. The project manager can create releases according to the need and can tag project items to it. It ensures that a consistent method of release build and deployment is followed throughout the organization. Release-wise reports available in Digité helps in tracking the progress of the projects on a release basis.
To access the Release management module, navigate to your project workspace and from left pane, select Project Setup. Click Releases to expand. The right pane displays the Release Management workspace.
Let me now walk you through the Release management features in detail.
To add a new release, click the Add Release icon. The Details section for the new release item appears.
This is the Release form. You need to enter values appropriately in the mandatory, and optional fields, if required. 1. Name –The name of the Release. 2. Description – Short description about the Release. 3.Release Date – Actual date of release which should be between project start and end dates. 4.Release Type –Patch, Major or Minor release. The read-only attributes displays values once the release progresses. Enter the description in the Description tab. You can select the approvers, etc. in the Workflow tab to track the release approval process.
After saving the release, the detail view of the release appears displaying additional sections such as, Comments, Previous Versions, Activity Log, and Attachments. You have learnt about these tabs earlier in the Digité Common Systems Operations training. The Release list page displays the newly added release along with other details such as, Name, Release Type, Planned Effort, etc. You can set the columns to be displayed in the Table view to monitor the status of the release instantly.
Once a release is created, it can be tagged to project items such as, User Requirement, Change Request, Defect, etc. To tag a particular release to any item, navigate to the item, and from the Details section, select a release from Release list.
Amongst the other common functionalities available, the Copy Release is available to create a new instance of the release with the details of existing release. Click the Copy Release icon in the Detail view of the release item. Type the name of the new release in the Release window. A new release is created with the same values which you can modify as necessary.
Now let us look at some of the Reports related to Release Management.
In Digité, you can view release-wise reports where the items are tagged to a release. As shown in the example, the U ser Requirement Scorecard report is plotted as per the release. Similarly, you can plot the Change Management Scorecard report, etc. For Agile projects, you can also view the Release Status report and the Release Burndown report.
With this you have come to the end of this training. Just to summarize, we have seen the Release Management module available in Digité application. Release Management is the process of planning, building, testing and deploying hardware and software releases. The purpose is to ensure that a consistent method of release building and deployment is followed throughout the Organization. Also, that only tested and accepted versions of hardware and software are installed at any time.
