Digital Optimism
If you’re creating the future you get
to shape it
techuk.org |@techUK | #techUK
Digital Realism
When it comes to skills, we’re just
not doing enough
techuk.org |@techUK | #techUK
The skills we need to secure our digital future
• 97% techUK members optimistic about potential for growth over
next 2 years
• But they say biggest threat to that growth, after global economic
conditions, is the lack of skilled people coming into the sector
• Estimates suggest the UK economy is losing a potential £2bn from
unfilled roles requiring digital skills
• 93% of tech firms believed the digital skills gap has direct negative
impact on their business
• Over 2 million skilled workers will be needed by 2020 in order to fulfil
the UK’s digital potential

What does the tech sector need to address the skills
gap?

Supercharging our digital talent

Recommendations
techuk.org |@techUK | #techUK
• Industry needs to empower and inspire young people to
help shape their digital world
• Scale digital learning programmes that engage with tech
early
• Afternoon clubs like Apps for Good inspire young
people to create games and interactive interfaces
• Fund early interventions in schools and games clusters
through 12 Digital Schoolhouse hubs
• Make teachers aware of resources available to them to
help teach the new generation
• Improve students’ understanding of tech careers
Demystify tech & inspire young people

Make tech fun and inclusive for everyone
Have Fun.
techuk.org |@techUK | #techUK
Make tech fun and inclusive for everyone
• Making at least basic digital skills available for
everyone
• Support STEAM education in schools, recognise
the importance of Art as essential discipline at
GSCE for industries such as design and gaming
• Tackle the unconscious gender bias in tech from an
early age
• Use digital tech to empower children with Special
Education Needs
techuk.org |@techUK | #techUK
Inspire girls to pursue tech subjects and careers
techuk.org |@techUK | #techUK
Inspire girls to pursue tech subjects and careers
• Only 17% of tech jobs in the UK are done by
women, and 23% of London tech firms have no
women at all in senior positions
• 52% of gamers are women – but only 12% of game
designers in Britain and 3% of all programmers are
women
• Champion female role models from the tech
industry – Government should continue its support
for the pan-European “Inspiring Fifty”
• Coordinate open days in tech businesses for girls,
not just graduates
• Gain a better understanding of why more girls don’t
pursue tech subjects
techuk.org |@techUK | #techUK
Create the digital skills needed across all sectors
techuk.org |@techUK | #techUK
Create the digital skills needed across all sectors
• Young people today will need digital skills almost
regardless of their chosen occupation
• Make young people aware that any job will require
digital skills by a social media campaign
#notjustforgeeks
• Encourage schools to use digital technology in non-
STEM subjects
• Create a habit of lifelong self-directed learning using
online resources
• This will impact on the ‘war for talent’ in the tech
sector by creating the basis for the digital skills
needed in the role

Ensure schools are equipped to teach computing
• Although the computing curriculum was passed in
England in 2014, there is still much to be done to
ensure teachers are well equipped
• DfE needs to ensure that current ICT teachers get
the training they need
• A commitment to train more ICT teachers to
implement the computing curriculum in England
and Scotland
• An assessment of the new computing curriculum
in England

Support and empower our teachers
• Non-ICT teachers do not always get the
digital skills training they need
• Teachers qualifications should include basic
digital skills
• Industry should offer shadowing programmes
to more teachers
• Teacher support networks should be
strengthened

apprenticeship target
• Support frameworks for SMEs to take
apprenticeships
• Encourage girls to take more apprenticeships
in the tech sector
• Support Next Gen Skills Academy Higher

Create new entry routes to tech
techuk.org |@techUK | #techUK
Create new entry routes to tech
• Industry must seek new ways of training and
recruiting
• The National College for Digital Skills should
be used as a model and rolled out across the
UK
• Increase opportunities for talent coming from
underprivileged backgrounds
• Create code conversion courses
• Support skills programmes and make sure the
Skills Investment Fund receives the right kind
of funding
techuk.org |@techUK | #techUK
Make it easier for industry to volunteer
• Increase awareness of the business
benefits of volunteering
• Create a matchmaking platform to increase
industry volunteering
• Identify volunteering champions in each
business
• Gaming companies should liaise with
programmes like Apps for Good which
encourage young children to develop their
own apps – often beginning with an easy
game

Adopt a ‘Smart Migration’ approach to support the UK
as a tech nation
• Let UK tech business thrive with top
international talent
• Consider immigration reform from a
growing business perspective
• Enable universities to attract top talent
from across the globe
• The gaming industry has also called for
careful consideration of plans regarding
Tier 2 visas

  1. It is a pleasure and an honour to be here with you today. I’m a huge digital optimist. I believe tech is a great enabler. Improving people’s lives, creating exciting new possibilities. And I believe the UK has a huge opportunity to become a world leading digital nation of significance. I want to talk today about some of the things we need to do to make that happen. I’m conscious that I speak from a privileged position, leading a successful digital technology company, and heading up the UK’s largest technology trade association – techUK. Digital is definitely part of my DNA. But I understand why some people are more sceptical about the digital future, concerned about the pace and scale of change, unsure about what it means for them, their families and their children. My answer is very simple. You have to be ‘In it to win it’. If we in the UK are at the forefront of creating the future, then we can shape it, and get it right, make it fit for purpose for the world we want to live in. Look at our heritage – from the invention of computing to the development of graphine - the UK has been at the forefront of the scientific discoveries that underpin the digital age. And we are world leading in our adoption and use of digital tech. 13 new tech unicorns emerged in Europe in 2014 and eight of them were founded here in the UK. The UK tech scene is in robust health. A recent techUK survey reported that 97% of techUK members are positive about their prospects for growth. But they said the biggest threat to that growth, after global economic conditions, is the lack of skilled people coming into the sector. And this is where I’m also a digital realist – because when it comes to skills, [NEXT SLIDE] we face huge challenges and the reality is that we’re just not doing enough to meet that challenge.
