Ioxus develops and manufactures innovative ultracapacitor technologies for energy storage. It was founded in 2006 to focus on developing electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC) technology, and began production in 2009 of 100F-2000F cells at its in-house facility. Ioxus' ultracapacitors provide higher power density, quicker charging/discharging, and longer cycle life than batteries. They target applications that require burst power delivery or voltage support, such as industrial power management, transportation, and military systems.
Ultracapacitors perform mid-way between conventional capacitors and electrochemical cells (batteries).Fast Charge and Fast Discharge CapabilityHighly reversible process, 100,000’s of cyclesLower energy than a battery~10% of battery energyGreater energy than electrolytic capacitorsExcellent low temperature performance
As demand suddenly increases (for example, when a large motor is turned on), the ultracapacitor back-fills the line with power to stabilize the originating source.
The ultracapacitor fills the gap to provide for bursts of power demands.
UC are today discussed by major car manufacturers as viable solution in a variety of applications in hybrid vehicles. Some of the areas being discussed are listed in the table above.
