SpringOne Platform 2016 Speaker: James Taylor; Architect, Comcast The Pivotal Team demonstrated the power of partnership during their engagement with the Comcast SPARROW Activation Team. Throughout the engagement, the SPARROW Team, leveraged every dimension of the Pivotal Teams capabilities from discussions of product strategy, architecture principles, design approaches, identifying areas of improvement, best practices and production deployment (standby support), this was truly a partnership. In parallel, Pivotal collaborated with the APS NTCE (New Technology Center of Excellence) to start educating our engineers on cloud technologies, micro-services, DevOps, Continuous Delivery & Deployment which was very helpful in enabling our engineers to change mindset. In fact, the relationship went significantly further then trying to sell software the relationship was focused on solving our business problems both technical and non-technical. The SPARROW Team was able to observe in production many of the design patterns that came out of the cloud-native transformation, we anticipate more than a 50% reduction in infrastructure systems, 30% improvement in productivity based on feedback from the development team during Iteration Planning & Retrospectives. In our early stage of production deployments we have seen 1% improvement in activation success already… This has been an unexpected journey.

Leadership isn’t something that you achieve with a manager role. It’s something that you *are*. Leaders exist everywhere in an organization. Leaders lead up, sideways, and down in a hierarchy. How do they do that? Why do they do that? How do they maintain their technical acumen if they relinquish their hands-on roles? You may choose to use your leadership skills to lead a project, lead an organization or simply to rally your coworkers. Or, you may just build better communication with your manager. You will leave this talk with a better understanding of what your leadership tendencies are, and how you might grow as a leader, regardless of whether or not you want to become a manager.

Netflix moves fast and Engineering Tools is charged with enabling that velocity. With that goal in mind, we made a lot of tooling changes in the past year. But with change, comes cost. We are in the process of migrating several systems near and dear to our developers, including our version control system, deployment tool, and operating system for our AMIs. Our goal is to do this while minimizing impact on our customer teams, How did we do? What could we have done better? What aspects of Netflix's culture enabled this? At Netflix, we realize that there’s a tension between the availability of our service and our speed of innovation. If we move slowly, we can be very available -- but that’s not a good business proposition. If we move super fast, we risk downtime -- and that might annoy our customers. But what if we could increase our velocity without significantly impacting availability? How can we shift that curve so that we’re moving faster without dropping any of those coveted 9’s? How can we engineer velocity by weaving together tooling and culture with software development to expose and elevate highly effective practices? This talk describes various components of Netflix’s continuous delivery platform -- much of which is available in open source. I’ll show how these pieces fit together and allow us to build scaffolding so that we’re comfortable with software developers making the decision to push the button for prod deployment -- and helps them to recover if necessary. As a result, we can run fast, trusting our tooling and our culture. I’ll also describe how we test our resiliency through simulating failure, unleashing the monkeys (Simian Army) on our production environment. Because if you’re afraid of cute little monkeys, imagine how afraid you’ll be of a production environment that offers those same risks but doesn’t give you an opportunity to test your response to those dangers. Throughout this talk, I hope that you will challenge yourself to consider how your company can "shift the curve" through tooling and to achieve a high velocity environment without negatively impacting reliability.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with.
