The Bahamas has a constitutional parliamentary democracy with an economy heavily dependent on tourism and offshore banking. It imports and exports goods from several countries including machinery, chemicals, fuels, food, mineral products, animal products, rum, fruits and vegetables. While it was once one of the wealthiest Caribbean countries, its economy is now shrinking due to a decline in tourism since 2006 and the departure of many international businesses after new financial sector regulations in 2000.
