I Believe You Can!
“I don’t think you can. Prove it.” My friend made this statement to me as we were standing in his back yard
next to a bicycle jump. The landing happened to be in the lake, which I had just plunged into at breakneck
speed. I was drenched, and so was my bike, yet that was not good enough for my friend. Like any teenager
would do, I defended my honor and climbed the hill even higher and rode even faster, jumping 26 feet into
the lake (I measured). I may have only landed in 1 foot of water, but I did it. “I can!” was the resounding
statement left in the wake.
At the time, I was tempted to prove “I can” which resulted in showing off. If my friend had just
changed his statement to “I believe you can,” the story would be much different.
Jesus meets a man with an incurable disease of their day. This man makes a similar affirming statement of
belief concerning Jesus’ abilities and it seems to be no leap of faith for him. He believes that Jesus can heal
him.
“When he came down from the mountain, great crowds followed him. And behold, a leper came to him and
knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you CAN make me clean” (Matthew 8:1-2).
This man made an interesting statement in regard to belief. He did not say, “I believe you will” - he left that
in Jesus’ hands. His statement did not lose any force or leave any with the impression of personal doubt. He
showed respect for Jesus giving Him the choice to accept or decline at will.
“And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy
was cleansed”(Matthew 8:3)
When we employ this type of faith, we leave our request in God’s hands. Do you believe He can? May we
never be like my friend as we approach the throne of God in prayer. May we have the faith to say,
“I believe you can!”

THE LAW OF EXCLUDED MIDDLE
By: Tim Shoemaker
Many years ago a debate was held in Dallas, Texas between
W. L. Oliphant, minister for the Oak Cliff Church of Christ and
Charles Smith, President of the American Association for the
Advancement of Atheism. In that debate Mr. Smith denounced
the doctrine of faith saying, ““The doctrine of faith makes the
clergy a menace to civilization. It depreciates reason. We live in
a dark forest with only a candle (reason) to guide us; and here
comes a person, the priest, who says: ‘Blow it out and you will
see better.’”
The religious world has followed along with this idea
that Christianity is a leap in the dark; no reason for it, just do it
and trust that Jesus will catch you. However, Jesus offered
proof that warranted belief. He used reason in His arguments
from the Scriptures. The N.T. appeals to man’s reason. For
example when Luke wrote to his friend Theophilus, “That thou
mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou
hast been instructed” (Lk. 1:4).
In the basic study of logic one learns the Laws of
Thought that are basic to all reasoning. One of these laws is
the Law of Excluded Middle which says, for things, “anything is
either A or ~A (not A).” For propositions, “a proposition is either
true or not true.
In Christianity we are either walking by faith or by
opinion. Paul told the church at Corinth, “For we walk by faith,
not by sight” (II Cor. 5:7). We must walk by faith to please
God (Heb. 11:6) and to walk by faith is to walk according to the
word of God (Rom. 10:17). As an example of this look at the
case of Cain and Abel in their sacrifices to God. Abel offered as
a sacrifice from his flock while Cain offered of the fruit of the
ground. In regard to their sacrifices, the Bible tells us, “the
LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: 5 But unto
Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was
very wroth, and his countenance fell” (Gen. 4:4b-5). The
reason for God’s acceptance of Abel’s sacrifice an His rejection
of Cain’s sacrifice is that “By faith Abel offered unto God a
more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained
witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts:
and by it he being dead yet speaketh” (Heb. 11:4). Abel was
walking by faith and Cain was not. He was following his opin-
ion. Again we see this in the life of Naaman who was sick with
leprosy. God’s word to Naaman through the prophet Elisha was
“Go and wash in Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall
come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean” (II Kings
5:10). However, Naaman wanted to follow his own opinion. His
initial response to God’s command was, “Behold, I thought,
He will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the
name of the LORD his God, and strike his hand over the
place, and recover the leper” (II Kings 5:11).
There are only two ways to direct our religious lives.
Either we will walk by faith or by the opinion of men.
