Iâm Wrong!
âIâm wrong!â How often do we hear these words come out of peopleâs mouths? Not often.
Apparently â get ready for a shock â people hate admitting when they are wrong! Daily
experience confirms this reality, but if you think Iâm wrong about this, allow me to present
some verifying research. PhyscTests AIM Inc. found in a 2019 study that 67% of the
people they surveyed acknowledged that they hate admitting when they are wrong, while
11% claimed that they donât mind admitting when they are wrong, and the rest who
admitted nothing. This research is far from surprising.
One need look no further than our countryâs politicians to observe the amazing and often
ridiculous lengths that people will go to to avoid any admonition of wrongdoing.
âMistakes were made.â By whom, good sir? âI misspoke.â Right, thatâs what us common
folk call lying. âMy thinking has evolved.â Translation: âMy previous promises will go
unfulfilled.â Itâs easy to call out politicians for doubletalk and their failure to own their
mistakes, but what about everyday people?
Every once in a while, I hear someone say âIâm never wrong!â Iâm honestly dumbfounded
when I hear someone say this. Thankfully, this is a minority view amongst people, with
most admitting that they are sometimes wrong. That âall have sinnedâ (Rom. 3:23) is
accepted by most.
And while people will often readily admit to small mistakes that we daily make â like
misplacing items or confusing information, when it comes to major beliefs and lifestyle,
most people are convinced that they are right. As Godâs Word says, âEvery manâs way is
right in His own eyes, but the Lord weighs the heartâ (Prov. 21:2). I recall sharing the
Gospel on one occasion, and being told, âIâm pretty sure Iâm not wrong.â Itâs incredible
how most people can recognize that we are all wrong about some things almost daily, and
yet are not even willing to evaluate whether their beliefs about God or their lifestyle is
wrong. It seems that the bigger the error, the more difficult it is for people to own up to
wrongdoing.
As Christians, we can still understand and empathize with these feelings. But when we
initially came to God, we swallowed our pride and admitted our guilt. Sadly, admitting to
wrongdoing is often the greatest obstacle in the way of people getting right with God. God
is ready and willing to forgive all who begin by admitting âIâm wrong.â As God once said
to Israel, âI will not be angry forever. Only acknowledge your iniquity, that you have
transgressed against the LORD your Godâ (Jer. 3:12c-13a).
We must reason with people to help them get past this obstacle. We should share with
others that if âyou are wrong about small things all the time, then couldnât you be wrong
about big things also, like your relationship with God, or your way of life?â
Truth can only be found when people willingly admit when they are wrong. And God can
only be found by those who acknowledge their sin. Let us always lead by example by
admitting when we are wrong, and help the world see that getting right with God begins
with saying âIâm wrong.â
