BEE Free From Sin
My family and I just moved to Trussville and immediately inherited several outdoor
spaces made of wood. This means our immediate neighbors are carpenter bees. We strive to be
holy in our household, but we do not want our house to be holey... if you know what I mean.
Recently, we noticed that on the corner of the back patio there is a suspended piece of 4x4 wood
with a mason jar attached to the bottom of it. I had never seen one of these devices, and upon
examination I noticed the jar was full to the top of those dreaded Drill-Bit Bumble Bees. It’s a
primitive trap that is quite genius! There are four entry holes drilled into each side of the wood
at an upward angle. These four tunnels access a center hole drilled from the bottom. The bee
enters the hole, thinking it is a beehive. When it realizes it is not, the bee tries to escape and by
instinct goes to the one source of light, falling into the jar and getting trapped.
“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death” (Proverbs
16:25). If we use ourselves only as the source of our truth or decision-making, Solomon says the
end to this is death. In essence, we will be a lot like this bee, making our home in a way of life
that at first seems harmless -- even fun. But as we travel further down the path, we recognize
that it isn’t right. This represents sin. “So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it,
for him it is sin” (James 4:17).
Being caught in sin can cause us to dig ourselves deeper into the mess, even when we
are trying to get out of it. I have not met one alcoholic who is happy with being an alcoholic. I
have not met one drug addict who is happy with being a drug addict. I don’t know anyone who
has not felt some sort of remorse for a sinful action. We all have a built-in mechanism to know
when we’ve done something that has gone too far. Often ,it’s what we do next that will make
the difference. We will often follow our own instincts and head to the light, not realizing living
in sin is a trap. We can be well-intentioned and get caught even further into Satan’s trap. Read
James 1:13-16 and find how the Bible defines this very trap of sin.
“Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above,
coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to
change. Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of
firstfruits of his creatures” (James 1:16-18).
Verse seventeen gives us the true light that will get us out of sin’s mess. Obeying the word of
truth is what will bring us out of sin. The Father of lights sent His only begotten son to be raised
by a carpenter. In essence, Jesus was willing to BEE our carpenter replacement -- to take on sin
for us, and build a way out so we would not have to BEE TRAPPED in sin.
Read Romans 6:1-14 to learn how to BEE free from sin.

Mission Sunday
Start prayerfully planning now!
2019 Mission Sunday will be May 5. The entire contribu-
tion that day will go toward our mission efforts at Deer-
foot Church of Christ. Last year $83,152.00 was given on
mission Sunday. Let’s try to beat that this year! Think of
all the wonderful mission efforts we can fund!

Jefferson Christian Academy
In the spring of 1970, several interested individuals
- all members of the Church of Christ – began formulat-
ing plans to fund and develop a great school to provide
quality education in a Christian environment for the
young people of the Birmingham area.
In the fall of 1971, operation of Jefferson Christian
Academy began with thirty students in kindergarten
through the fourth grade, meeting in the old building of
the Homewood Church of Christ. Enrollment grew to
sixty students the following year, necessitating a move to
larger facilities, which were provided by what was then
the Woodlawn Church of Christ (now Deerfoot Church of
Christ). The academy continued to expand there until it
moved to the campus of the former Birmingham Univer-
sity School in 1975. In February of 1985, JCA moved to
its present facilities on a 15-acre campus on the eastern
edge of Irondale.
The purpose of Jefferson Christian Academy is to
provide and maintain a safe Christian environment that
promotes spiritual and academic growth. It is a Bible
based school that focuses on the whole child; spirit,
mind, body and a servant’s heart. Their goal is to prepare
their students for life and eternity with each day centered
on Biblical truth and its application to everyday life. We
will encourage each child to develop and use the talents
that God has given them so that they may be a role
model for others. They provide a clear model of Christian
life through their faculty, staff and Board of Directors and
strive to train up each child to follow the example of
Christ – “And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and
in favor with God and men” (Luke 2:52).
JCA students have daily Bible classes for K4-12
grade, daily chapel services for 6th
-12th
grade, and twice-
a-week chapel services for K4-5th
grade. Deerfoot
Church of Christ has been supporting the school’s
academics by giving $12,000 to help pay the salary of
the man who serves as the teacher for all of the Bible
classes.
We believe that this is an important work of teach-
ing God’s word to the children and we need the church to
continually give liberally to support this and the other
works of spreading God’s word. Please begin thinking
seriously of how much you can give on Mission Sunday.
