Spreading the Gospel in
Belize for 50 Years
We are thankful to be part of The Mission work here at Deerfoot. This Mission trip
marks our 50th
year in the country of Belize. In 1968 the Church allocated $9,300.00 of
the budget to fully support a missionary in Belize. There was no Church of Christ in
Belize at that time. In 1969 Jerry Jenkins went to Belize and spent several days visiting
and door knocking. Also in 1969 Woodlawn Church of Christ sent Luther Savage to work
in Belize City as a Missionary. Over the years Bro. Jerry was on several radio stations and
had TV programs on 5 stations throughout the country of Belize. At this time there are
over 20 Churches of Christ in the country of Belize. We are thankful for our Elders con-
tinued support of mission work around the world.
Men like Leroy Owens, Jerry Jenkins, Johnny Tucker, Sol Godwin, Thurman Craw-
ford, Steve Brown, Tim Shoemaker, John Gallagher, and Rick Glass were the first to go
into the country where the living conditions were hard and do the campaigns.
I was encouraged to get involved in the Belize campaign. My first campaign trip was
to Belmopan where I learned to love the people and the work there. This is my 11th
year
of Belize Campaigns.
At this time there are 22 of us in Corozal and Libertad, Belize working on this yearâs
campaign where we are conducting a gospel meeting, door knocking and setting up and
conducting Bible studies.
Every dollar donated was used to buy Bibles. The Bibles and glasses that were do-
nated will be used to save souls.
Thank You for your continued support on Mission Sunday and for the
individual donations made for this Campaign.

The Need to Evangelize
The word evangelize is from the Greek word
euanggelizo which means âto bring or announce
glad tidings.â It was used of bringing good tidings of
any kind. In Luke 2:10 the angels announced to the
shepherds, âDo not be afraid, for behold, I bring
you good tidings of great joy which will be to all
people.â Paul uses this word in quoting from Isaiah
52:7 in Rom. 10:15. âAnd how shall they preach
unless they are sent? As it is written: "How
beautiful are the feet of those who preach the
gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good
things!â As a noun the word was used of the good
tidings or gospel. In giving the great commission,
Jesus told His disciples, âGo into all the world and
preach the gospel to every creatureâ (Mk.
16:15). Earlier in Markâs gospel we have Jesus us-
ing this word in speaking of the coming destruction
of Jerusalem, explaining that certain things must
happen prior to that destruction. Jesus told them
that among other things, âthe gospel must first be
preached to all the nationsâ (Mk. 13:10). The
word is used as an adjective to describe the one
who brings the good tidings. Luke uses the word of
Philip in Acts 21:8. âOn the next day we who
were Paul's companions departed and came to
Caesarea, and entered the house of Philip the
evangelist, who was one of the seven, and
stayed with him.â And Paul commanded Timothy
to âbe watchful in all things, endure afflictions,
do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your minis-
tryâ (2 Tim. 4:5).
Evangelism is not limited to proclaiming the
gospel from the pulpit to a large audience. It was
often used of the telling of the good news by one
individual to another individual. For example we see
this being done by Andrew in John 1:40, 41 â âOne
of the two who heard John speak, and followed
Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. âHe
first found his own brother Simon, and said to
him, âWe have found the Messiahâ (which is
translated, the Christâ)â. The greatest need, the
greatest work is to evangelize the whole world. But
why? Why should we be concerned with evangeliz-
ing the world?
First of all we need to remember that life is
short. Our time to do the evangelizing and the time
for the lost to hear and respond is limited. This fact
is emphasized throughout the Bible. Long ago the
psalmist said, âthe days of our lives are seventy
years; And if by reason of strength they are
eighty years, Yet their boast is only labor and
sorrow; For it is soon cut off, and we fly
awayâ (Psa. 90:10). One may live to be eighty or
even longer. However, there is no guarantee of that
and the truth is that it might be limited to the age to
which we have attained. -TIM SHOEMAKER

Thank You
To the Minister and Family of God,
I have no words to convey what is on
my heart that would say enough for
what you did for the family of Danette
Vigil. Thank You, you certainly dis-
played the heart and hands of Jesus in
your sweet ministry to Danetteâs daugh-
ters, family and friends. I have shared
with many how you exemplified Christ
in your caring toward our family.
Again Thank You
