I Have a Clean Slate?
While living in Scotland, I remember walking down the
wet and windy streets of Glasgow on my way to visit its
University. I was walking the cobbled streets just like
countless others had done before me since its establishment in 1451. Just think of those original
students who walked that same path when the cobble stones were first laid. They had no idea of
the Americas and would not “discover” its existence for the next 41 years.
Their university also boasted brand-new technology of the times: the mass printed book.
The first one, a Bible, was reproduced on Gutenberg’s press 7 years prior. As I was walking that
ancient pavement, I looked down and found a perfectly intact slate that had somehow flown from
the roof first laid in the Renaissance. I picked up the slate shingle that was covered in years of
grime and debris. I began to wipe it clean and immediately noticed the craftsmanship and pains-
taking time that went into its production. Then I managed to carry it to my car, and when we
moved home to the States it was numbered among our belongings. It now has a place of honor
in my office. I guess you could say I have a "clean slate."
What does the phrase "a clean slate" really mean? In the Victorian era, students did not
use paper but would use a smooth slate in the school room with a writing implement made of
slate. Later, this concept made way for the development of chalk on a chalkboard. When the as-
signment was done, the slates were wiped clean for the next lesson. A clean slate would forever
be synonymous with a new beginning or to describe one’s potential.
Another use for slate is my favorite and one I am reminded of every day in my office.
Slates, at one time, were used by local merchants and their customers. The grocer, for instance,
would have a slate that represented the buyer’s bill, or tab, as it was called. The buyer would “run
up the tab” throughout the week, and after pay day they returned to pay the grocer what was
owed. The grocer would then wipe the slate clean.
Jesus’ model prayer has an example of a clean slate when it comes to our relationship
with God. Jesus said, “Pray then like this: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your
kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one (Matthew 6:9-13).
God represents the merchant wiping off our slate; our debt because we gave into the evil
one. Paul says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). It is sin
that you and I have that must be covered, paid for, and wiped away -- or we will stand con-
demned before God. Peter tells us, “Repent and be immersed every one of you in the name of
Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts
2:38). He says a similar message in the following chapter. “Repent therefore, and return, so that
your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of
the Lord." (Acts 3:19-20)

THE LAW OF HARVEST
The apostle Paul issued a warning to the Galatians
brethren but to us also in regard to the “Law of Harvest.”
Paul said, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked;
for whatsoever a man sows, this he will also
reap” (Gal. 6:7).
Paul’s choice of words (as led by the Holy Spirit)
is intriguing. The word “deceive” is from the Greek ma
planasthe which means “to go astray; be misled; wander
away.” The Galatians were in danger of being led astray
to believing they could sow a life of not caring for their
fellow Christians and still reap a life of blessings from
God. However, Paul also tells us that “God is not
mocked.” This particular word in the Greek is mukterizo
from mukter meaning “nose.” The idea is that “one can-
not turn up his nose at; one cannot sneer at God, or treat
Him with contempt.” Paul is not saying that such actions
would be impossible for men to do, only that men cannot
do these things with impunity. They will answer to God
for the life they have chosen to lead.
There is this law of harvest. “For whatsoever a
man sows, this he will also reap.” Paul expands upon
this law and tells us “For the one who sows to his own
flesh shall from the flesh reap corruption, but the
one who sows to the Spirit shall from the Spirit reap
eternal life” (Gal. 6:8). There are two sowings and two
reapings. To sow to the flesh is to give in to the desires
of the flesh and the harvest would be “ruin, destruction,
dissolution or deterioration.” If we feed our physical body
trash we will reap a harvest of poor health. If we feed our
spirit trash following after the ways of the flesh we can
expect only a harvest of suffering. In speaking of the fruit
of Israel’s sin, Hosea said, “For they sow the wind, and
they reap the whirlwind” (Hosea 8:7a). In sowing to
the flesh we not only reap corruption we reap more than
we sow. Israel had sown a gentle breeze but they would
reap a tornado. Israel’s reaping would be far more de-
structive. When John wrote of the destruction of Jerusa-
lem in the book of Revelation he said, “For her sins
have reached to heaven, and God has remembered
her iniquities. 6 "Render to her just as she rendered
to you, and repay her double according to her works;
in the cup which she has mixed, mix double for
her” (Rev. 18:5, 6). Again the reaping of her harvest for
the sin she had sown would be twice that of her works.
But there is the second reaping in keeping with
the same law. If we sow to the Spirit we shall of the Spirit
reap eternal life! If we follow the leading of the Holy
Spirit, if we believe in Jesus, so as to repent of our sins,
confess Him before men and be buried with Him in bap-
tism we have our past sins forgiven. If we live faithful to
Him until death we will receive the crown of life! What
you are sowing will determine what you will reap. If we
can assist you in sowing to the Spirit that you might reap
eternal life please let that be made known now by com-
ing forward while we stand and sing.
