A Pure Fountain
“Every word of God is pure; He is a
shield to those who put their trust in Him. 6 Do
not add to His words, Lest He rebuke you, and
you be found a liar” (Proverbs 30:5, 6 NKJV).
God’s word as delivered to us by inspired men is
pure but the sad thing is that some have tried to
change that word and in so doing it becomes pol-
luted. As Agur wrote it we are not to add to God’s
word. That would be changing what God has said
and it would no longer be pure. But we are also
warned not to take from God’s word for that would
also be changing God’s word (Deut. 12:32). In
Psalms 19 David wrote “The statutes of the LORD
are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment
of the LORD is pure, enlightening the
eyes” (Psa. 19:8). To be pure may mean either to
be without addition (unmixed) or undefiled (dirty or
foul). Wine that has had water added to it may be
undefiled but it is still impure for something else has
been added to it. The word of God is pure in both
senses. It is undefiled and unmixed and it needs to
be kept that way.
A number of years ago our brother Jerry
was asked to speak to a denominational croup at
which he was given a series of questions they
wanted him to answer. One of those questions was,
“Do you believe the Bible contains the word of
God?” One might be led to answer quickly, “Yes, I
believe the Bible contains the word of God,” but an-
swering in that way implies that the Bible contains
the word of God plus something else, namely the
words of some man or group of men. The truth of
the matter is that the Bible doesn’t contain the word
of God, it is the word of God! When a person is
sworn in to testify in court he is asked, “Do you
promise to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing
but the truth, so help you God?” To tell the whole
truth means you are not to leave anything out and
to tell nothing but the truth means you are not to
add to the truth. Either way is to change God’s word
and thus to pollute it and thus it would no longer be
pure.
Because God’s word is pure it can enlighten
us. To enlighten is to reveal, to give knowledge to. If
anyone wants to know God’s way he’s got to spend
time with the Bible. When we turn from the Bible to
add to it the words of men, then we have left the
pure fountain to drink from a polluted stream.
