5PMSelf There is No Good Without God
To be good is something we all strive to do in our own way. Everyone has the capacity for good
â no one is all bad. Everyone also has the capacity for bad â no one is all good. This compare and con-
trast of bad and good can find its origin in the beginning of time.
âThe Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. And
the Lord God commanded the man, saying, âYou may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree
of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely
dieâ (Genesis 2:15-17).
Was humankindâs first experience of good introduced through the eating of the forbidden tree?
Did good exist before then? Good was a result of Godâs creation in the beginning, not manâs sin. Good is
mentioned fourteen times in the first three chapters of Genesis. In eleven of those verses, âGodâ and
âGoodâ are together. In fact, there is no good without God. You cannot even spell the word Good without
God.
Jesus Himself reserved good for God. âAnd, behold, one came and said to Him (Jesus), Good
Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? And he said to him, âWhy do you call me
good? There is none good but one, that is, God: but if you will enter into life, keep the command-
mentsâ (Matt 19:16,17). Jesus is implying that the man has placed Him on the level of God. This may be a
test to see if the man truly meant to do so. James, the Lordâs brother, reserved good for God. âEvery good
gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no
variation or shadow due to change. Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should
be a kind of first-fruits of his creaturesâ (James 1:17,18). Here James is comparing the word of truth to the
good gift of God that came down. It was Jesus, His Son. Through Him, we are His first-fruits. We are the
first-fruits, since God created the church through His Son. If, as Christians, we are Godâs first fruits, then
we must know that God sees us as good.
When God created His first fruit in Eden, we know His response. âThe earth brought forth vege-
tation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each
according to its kind. And God saw that it was goodâ (Gen 1:12). When God finally cre-
ated man, it was the only time He added something to the good that He had previously created. âAnd God
saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was
morning, the sixth day (Gen 1:31). In Godâs eyes, mankind was the final part to the creation, making it
very good. When God sees you and I becoming a part of His first-fruits, the church, we can infer that it is
very good in His eyes. Is the church good in your eyes? When we strive to follow Godâs instruction and
obey His commands, the result is very good.
Are you a part of the good that God has provided you through His Son, through the church?
There is no good without God. -A Note From the Harp

Wasted?
This morning as I got into my car I suddenly re-
membered my lunch. So back into the house, I went to
the refrigerator and took out the spaghetti that was left
from our supper. Leftovers. My parents and those of their
generation had grown up in the time of the great depres-
sion when so many lacked what we enjoy today. So they
learned not to waste anything. I grew up eating
âleftovers.â
On one occasion when a great multitude fol-
lowed Jesus, He asked Philip, âWhere shall we buy
bread, that these may eat?â Philip responded that the
money they had (200 denarii) was not enough money to
buy enough bread to feed that many people. It was then
that Andrew said, âThere is a lad here who has five bar-
ley loaves and two small fish, but what are they among
so many?â So Jesus, who knew all along what He was
going to do, had the people to sit down. He blessed the
bread and gave to the disciples who then distributed to
the ones sitting down. Likewise he did the same with the
fish so that all had as much as they wanted. Then when
they were finished Jesus instructed the disciples, saying,
âGather up the fragments that remain, so that nothing is
lostâ (John 6:12). A few translations such as the Bible in
Basic English render this verse as âTake up the broken
bits which are over, so that nothing may be wasted.â The
Master, who did not consider one sheep expendable,
even when ninety and nine were safe (Luke 15:4, 5), did
not want to see the generous blessings of God wasted.
Most assuredly we do not want to waste the
spiritual food that God has given to us. God had warned
Israel through His prophet Amos that âBehold, the days
are coming," says the Lord GOD, "That I will send a fam-
ine on the land, Not a famine of bread, Nor a thirst for
water, But of hearing the words of the LORD.â
It is not just food that we need to avoid wasting
but also such precious things as the time that we have
been given. Bernard Berenson said on one occasion, âI
wish I could stand on a busy street corner, hat in hand,
and beg people to throw me all their wasted hours.â Ben-
jamin Franklin admonished people to âWaste neither time
nor money, but make the most of both.â In letters to two
different churches Paul spoke of âredeeming the time.â In
one of those passages (Eph. 5:16), our brother Hugo
McCord translated it as âMaking the most of the time.â
Donât allow that time to pass without using it for doing
Godâs will. Knowing that our time is limited, Paul wrote to
the church at Rome, saying, âAnd do this, knowing the
time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for
now our salvation is nearer than when we first be-
lievedâ (Rom. 13:11).
Let us be determined not to waste Godâs spiritual
food, thinking, Iâve read it all, I donât need to read it again.
For every time we read it we will be able to learn more
and be reminded of what we had read but had forgotten.
Let us not waste the time we have but use it wisely,
âmaking the most of the timeâ we have.
My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I enjoyed all the pretty birthday
cards and gifts you sent me. Thank you
very much. A special thank you to sister
Bev Key.
God Bless,

We are so thankful for our friends, fam-
ily, and our Church family seeing us thru
this journey. I got the final test results
today on the big fat tumor. It was be-

never seen before. He is still amazed.
Thank you for everyone keeping a check
on us. Every prayer, card, text, call, visit,
flowers and meals have make life a little
easier for us.
