Men’s Retreat is upon us. Our speaker this year is Nic Weymouth.
Nic has a Master of Ministry from Freed Hardeman University and
a BA from the University of Alabama. Nic is an inspiration the mo-
ment you meet him as he has overcome so many physical chal-
lenges in his life. Nic was born with no legs but this has not
stopped him in any way. I am looking forward to the lessons he
plans to bring. I pray that we will gain a great deal from this year’s
retreat and we will be charged and ready to work for the Kingdom.
Please consider taking part in this wonderful event.
In Him,
Richard Harp

Overcoming Life’s Problems
Part 3
By: Tim Shoemaker
As we continue looking at ways to over-
come our problems in life we need to re-
member the value of the prayers of the
righteous. In Philippians 1:19 Paul told
those brethren, “For I know that this will turn out for
my deliverance through your prayer and the supply
of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.” Paul is convinced that
the problems he was enduring, his imprisonment and the
preaching of some of his brethren that hope to add to his
affliction, would work out for his salvation. What salvation
is he speaking of in this situation? The word “salvation” is
translated from the Greek word soteria which could be
used of salvation from imprisonment, from death or from
all these problems. It is my personal belief that Paul is
referring to his being released from prison. Some object
to this based upon Paul’s statement in verse 20 that
“Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life
or by death.” However in verse 25 He expresses his
confidence that he knew that he would remain with them.
“And being confident of this, I know that I shall re-
main and continue with you all for your progress and
joy of faith.”
Paul’s confidence in part was due to the prayers of
the Philippian brethren for him. Paul often requested the
prayers of the brethren on his behalf. Rom. 15:30 –
“Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus
Christ, and through the love of the Spirit, that you
strive together with me in your prayers to God for
me.” “in whom we trust that He will still deliver us,
you also helping together in prayer for us…” (II Cor.
10b, 11a). Col. 4:3 – “meanwhile praying also for us,
that God would open to us a door for the word, to
speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in
chains.”
“When people are in sorrow and their hearts are
broken, one of their greatest comforts is the awareness
that there are others who are bearing their name to the
throne of the God of grace. We cannot call a man our
friend—and we cannot call ourselves his friend—unless
we pray for him.” Jesus calls us His friends (John 15:14,
15 – “You are My friends if you do whatever I com-
mand you. 15 "No longer do I call you servants, for a
servant does not know what his master is doing; but
I have called you friends, for all things that I heard
from My Father I have made known to you.”) John
17:20 – “I do not pray for these alone, but also for
those who will believe in Me through their word.” I
know that some people are very private and they don’t
want others to know the problems they are facing, but in
keeping it to ourselves we are robbing ourselves of the
great aid in solving our problems. Paul had great prob-
lems in life but he understood that “God is our refuge
and strength, A very present help in trouble” (Psa.
46:1), and he took full advantage of that help! “And we
know that all things work together for good to those
who love God, to those who are the called according
to His purpose” (Rom. 8:28). God could take the prob-
lem of Paul’s imprisonment and use that to bring about
good. But Paul also depended upon the prayers of his
brethren on his behalf.
