We Must Obey God
We have a new commander and chief. No matter where we fall on the political side, he is our commander
and chief. Our Creator, our sustainer, our omnipresent God and Father has given us the tools to know how
to treat our leaders.
“Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and
those that exist have been instituted by God. 2
Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has
appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. 3
For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad.
Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his ap-
proval, 4
for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the
sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer.
5
Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of con-
science” (Romans 13:1-5).
It is refreshing to know that Paul is referring to Nero Caesar of Rome. A leader that I do not believe any
Roman citizen would have voted for if given the chance. Nero was unstable in his life as he came to power
by age 16. He quickly had his half-brother killed to secure his place as emperor. He then married his half-
sister, and later had his own mother executed. Perhaps the most challenging aspect of Nero’s evils was his
persecution of Christians.
Regardless of what our leaders do, we are still subject to their authority (v.1) as we are subject to God’s
authority (v.1), and we still do good (v.3).
Perhaps the balance to this is found when the apostles are faced with choosing between following God or
following their leaders.
“And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest questioned
them, saying, ‘We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with
your teaching, and you intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.’ But Peter and the apostles answered, ‘We
must obey God rather than men’” (Acts 5:27-29).
As the Apostles submitted to someone they did not agree with, we too must submit as we strive to obey God
first and foremost. This means we also must submit to our new commander and chief. Please pray for our
leaders and for the opportunities to spread the Gospel in this land.
“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people,
for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified
in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be
saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:1-4).
