We Find Our Roots In Him.
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree
planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves
remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit” (Jeremiah 17:7-
8).
15 years ago, I was walking on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond and I rounded a bend on the
beach. Immediately, I saw a huge tree that had been pushed over by a gale. The tree was offset from the
shore, but its roots stretched all the way to the water’s edge. There at my feet was a broken section of root
about the size of my leg. I took note because there were three large rocks encased in the fresh piece of drift-
wood. I picked it up and still have it to this day. This experience reminded me of the above-mentioned pas-
sage.
That tree sent its roots to where the water was, and this is why the tree grew to such a great height.
The foundation was sand, and it ultimately met its demise. That, too, left a lasting impression. However, the
lesson that has been memorialized with this memento is the three rocks encased within the wood. That tree
was simply fulfilling its purpose as it “sent out its roots by the stream.”
Did it bargain for the rocks? Did it plan for the challenges it would face as it sought to fulfill its duty? The
root was stopped short on its journey 3 times, but what is fascinating is the contortion of time and space as
it encapsulated the rocky trials, bypassing them, and making them a part of its success story. You can al-
most hear it speak, “I will not give up! I will overcome! I will make it to my destination!” The significance
of the three rocks is that suffering is often said to come in threes. How will you face trials when they came?
Will your character be broken, or will it be shaped?
Paul would call this process of trials and overcoming as character building, as he did to the Roman Chris-
tians:
“Through Him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in
hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces
endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to
shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to
us” (Romans 5:2-5).
May we recognize that on our journey to the shores of Heaven, we will face obstacles that will seek to stop
us dead in our tracks. May we not lose heart! May we hold to the hope that compels us onward. The next
verse gives us the source of our hope.
“For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly” (Romans 5:6).
Jesus is our hope and He died on a tree so we could find our trust in Him. So we could find our roots in
Him.

Overcoming Life’s Problems
By: Tim Shoemaker
Bobby Jones, champion golfer, once said,
"Have you ever noticed how much golfers practice?
Smart businessmen have been quick to take advantage
of that, developing public driving ranges where we can
practice driving the ball, and putting greens where we
can practice our putting. But why hasn’t someone devel-
oped public sand traps? Sand traps are an inevitable part
of the game of golf, and every golfer ought to practice
ahead of time how to get out of trouble."
I think that’s good advice for all of us. For even as
we talk about being thankful for the blessings that come
our way, we must admit that problems and troubles also
come our way. It was Norman Vincent Peale who said,
"Problems are a part of life. All of us are going to have
problems right up to the moment we die. And some of
you are going to have problem after you die.”
So it only makes sense, if we’re going to find
ourselves in sand traps, that we learn how to get out of
them. And the letter to the Philippians, written by the
apostle Paul, can help us do just that. Paul certainly had
his share of problems that he had to overcome. When he
wrote this epistle he was a prisoner of Rome.
“But I would ye should understand, brethren,
that the things which happened unto me have fallen
out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel; 13 So
that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace,
and in all other places; 14 And many of the brethren
in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much
more bold to speak the word without fear” (Phil. 1:12
-14). Paul was a man with a positive outlook and a great
faith in God and God’s promises. Paul was a man, who
given a lemon, would make lemonade. He saw his im-
prisonment as an event that would lead to the further-
ance of the gospel! It seems that the church had written
to Paul seeking information about his welfare. Perhaps
they were concerned not only about his physical well be-
ing but his mental state. For a man such as Paul who
has dedicated himself to preaching the gospel where it
had not been preached to be suddenly imprisoned and
no longer able to go where he wanted to go could be
devastating. So Paul wants the church to understand that
his bonds have not been a barrier to the preaching of the
gospel but has actually been a way of furthering the gos-
pel.
The expression “furtherance of the gospel” is in
the Greek prokope tou euangeliou which means
“advancement in spite of obstructions and dangers which
would block the path of the traveler.” William Barclay
says that the verb form of this word prokope means “to
cut down in advance.” It was used of cutting away the
trees and undergrowth, and removing the barriers which
would hinder the progress of an army. So Paul’s impris-
onment, instead of closing the door has actually opened
a door for the preaching of the gospel.
