The Example of Jesus – Part Two
The docetists believed that the body (and all
things material) were evil, and therefore Jesus could
not have had a physical body. But God in His wisdom
would know of such things and in His word He sup-
plied the answers (at least in principle) to all such
problems. God shows us that Jesus truly did take the
form of a servant. He really did become a man.
Jesus was God but He chose to become a man
and to do that He humbled Himself! Jesus had taught
that the truly great people were those who would hum-
ble themselves to serve others. In Matthew 18:4
He taught that humility was necessary to being great in
His kingdom. Jesus said, “Whosoever therefore
shall humble himself as this little child, the same is
greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” To emphasize
this point to His disciples Jesus gave them an example
by His own actions when they had gathered to observe
the Passover Feast. “Now before the feast of the
passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was
come that he should depart out of this world unto
the Father, having loved his own which were in the
world, he loved them unto the end. 2 And supper
being ended, the devil having now put into the
heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him;
3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all
things into his hands, and that he was come from
God, and went to God; 4 He riseth from supper,
and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and
girded himself. 5 After that he poureth water into a
bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and
to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was
girded. 6 Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Pe-
ter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? 7
Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou
knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereaf-
ter.” (John 13:1-7). Jesus’ example of service went so
far as to give His life in service to God and all mankind.
He explained it by saying, “Even as the Son of man
came not to be ministered unto, but to minister,
and to give his life a ransom for many.” (Matt.
20:28).
Jesus was obedient unto death. Jesus, in com-
manding us to “be thou faithful unto death” (Rev.
2:10), is not commanding us to do anything that
He Himself did not do. Jesus was obedient unto death
on the cross. This was not an easy thing for Him to do.
Very likely He had witness crucifixions, and He would
have known of the torture. He had prayed fervently in
regard to this that this cup might pass, but always with
the stipulation, “not my will by thy will be done.”
But there was more than the physical torture of
the cross. There was also the shame for it was a death
reserved for the worst of criminals. The writer of He-
brews tells us that Jesus “endured the cross, de-
spising the shame” (Heb. 12:2).
