A Note From the Harp
Certainty.
Paul emphasized to the Corinthian congregation the topic of utmost certainty.
Paul was a very educated man and had access to great wisdom and insight (Acts
22:3). Paul was a tentmaker by trade, and we know that he was successful in
his work efforts. His missionary journeys would have been costly endeavors, yet he trav-
elled thousands of miles over land and sea. Why? For what reason did Paul put himself
in harms way? Why did he endure 8 beatings almost to death, one stoning, and three
shipwrecks? “On frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger
from (his) own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness,
danger at sea, danger from false brothers; 27
in toil and hardship, through many a sleep-
less night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure” (2 Cor. 11:24-
27).
Paul took his right and authority as an apostle of the Lord and submitted himself
to Christ. Paul decided to represent to the Corinthian congregation the topic of utmost
certainty.
“And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of
God with lofty speech or wisdom. 2
For I decided to know nothing among you except Je-
sus Christ and him crucified” (1 Cor. 1:1, 2).
In our lives, we all have our own understandings and perspectives. We must share this
same unifying resolve. May we be ever more certain of the unity we share in Christ. May
we also choose to know nothing among ourselves except Christ and Him crucified. The
only cause for
Certainty.

The Gap Between Knowing and Doing –
Part 4
A third reason why some people know
but fail to do what they know is self-deception.
The verse we mentioned last week illustrates this.
James said, “But be ye doers of the word, and not
hearers only, deceiving your own selves” (Js.
1:22). This was a problem that many in Israel had.
They would listen to God’s message but they would
not obey. God told His prophet Ezekiel, “And, lo,
thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one
that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on
an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they
do them not” (Ezek. 33:32).
Self-deception is lying to self; rationalizing
about sin and personal responsibility. So Israel
would deceive themselves into believing that every-
thing was alright between them and God and any sin
was not their fault but the fault of someone else.
Adam blamed Eve and indirectly God and Eve
blamed the serpent. “And the man said, The
woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she
gave me of the tree, and I did eat. 13 And the
LORD God said unto the woman, What is this
that thou hast done? And the woman said, The
serpent beguiled me, and I did eat” (Gen. 3:12,
13).
Some are deceived into thinking that they are
the exception to the rule. Those disobedient to the
gospel will be lost but God will make an exception
with me. Again, looking into God’s word we read,
“Who will render to every man according to his
deeds” (Rom. 2:6, 11). And again Paul tells us,
“For there is no respect of persons with
God” (Rom. 2:11). Lukewarm Christians disgust
God, but I’m one lukewarm Christian that doesn’t.
Rev. 3:16 – “So then because thou art lukewarm,
and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of
my mouth.”
Some believe that while most unfaithful Chris-
tians will be lost in hell, God will make an exception
with them. However, in James. 5:19, 20 we are
told, “Brethren, if any of you do err from the
truth, and one convert him; 20 Let him know,
that he which converteth the sinner from the er-
ror of his way shall save a soul from death, and
shall hide a multitude of sins.”

Deerfoot Church of Christ,
This is a feeble attempt to express my love
to the congregation that was part of me for
about 40 years and how circumstances have
caused me to move away. First off, I recall
learning at the feet of great Bible teachers like
Jerry Jenkins, Tim Shoemaker, Ron Cobb,
Brown Rogers, and many others. I recall the
baptisms following a study and what a joyous
occasion it was. I recall the many handshakes
and hugs we received each time we met; the
local door knockings, the Rook games going
on adult campaigns, and Belizean campaigns. I
recall the many fellowships meals we shared
together, like CIA’s second Tuesday lunch,
Wednesday nights, VBS homemade ice cream,
Edification team meals Sundays start of a gos-
pel meeting, etc. I recall the many visits we
made, hospitals, Monday night, funerals, etc. I
recall when we cut the grass, dug a ditch for a
fire hydrant water line, put up a couple of high
block walls, remodeled and repainted the
building, and put trash cans in the auditorium
to catch the rain leaks, etc. I recall how the
congregation responded to requests for finan-
cial assistance for victims of Hurricanes, Tor-
nados, from other sources, plus Mission Sun-
day, Purpose Sunday, etc. I recall how a
brother told me how to increase my giving to
the Lord each year. I recall how a teenage boy,
practicing a L2L speech, told me how to quit
smoking cigarettes. And I will never forget the
encouragement I have received these last few
weeks from my brothers and sisters telling me
I‘m doing the right thing with June and how
we will be missed. I will thank each of you
personally when we meet in heaven.
