Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) are employee benefit programs offered by many employers that are intended to help employees deal with personal problems that could impact their work. EAPs provide assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals for employees and their families for issues like substance abuse, mental health, family/relationship problems, legal/financial issues, and work-related problems. These programs are becoming more common and the responsibilities of EAP professionals are expanding. EAPs can benefit employers through reduced absenteeism and turnover as well as increased productivity and morale.
