What we’re doing today:
I’ll speak quickly on choosing, because we’ve all chosen iClicker, right? So today I’ll focus mostly on the process we’ve developed to grow, support, and sustain the use of clickers.
Our goal was to research clicker systems and recommend one as the university standard.
We developed a list of desirable clicker system attributes and capabilities, and agreed that the following were most important:
Ease of use (class preparation, use in the classroom, data analysis, and student registration)
Easy integration with the campus course management system (Blackboard)
Cross-platform functionality (i.e., PC and Macintosh)
No need to learn other software
Equipment Durability
The Cycle:
FOR FALL SEMESTER, the start of the Academic Year:
MARCH-APRIL:
Invite new faculty users to Introduction to Clickers session FOR USE THE FOLLOWING FALL. 1.5 hours. - Show email invite
Find out who of experienced users will be using them in the fall semester: Who, Where, When (signal frequency concerns); Remind them to ask for an enhanced classroom, to order clickers from the bookstore.
Create DOODLE: Determine Intro time(s). Make sure everyone who is interested will have opportunity to come.

Mid-to-late August: TRAINING for Fall Semester -invite experienced faculty if they want a refresher or to update to new software.
The Cycle:
FOR FALL SEMESTER, the start of the Academic Year:
First few weeks: Help faculty register students in classes. Shpiel (Pp) for students in classes. OR, leave them alone.
During this time, there is a huge need for helping with the Roster file and getting it right. Also, discover frequency signal problems and help with frequency changes when needed.
October or so, generally, a hiatus…

Mandatory, 1.5 hours
Set at a time(s) when everyone interested can attend
I create a Pp and use it to show various iClicker functions. Start the session with it:
I start the session with a POLL!: Are you here? And AJCU questions. To hook them in.
THEN, I tell them what we’re going to do today:
- This is an INTRODUCTORY session. You will find out what the iClicker student response system is, how it works, why it’s used, how you would use it in class, and how you would grade with it. MOST IMPORTANTLY: YOU WILL DECIDE WHETHER YOU WANT TO USE IT OR NOT.
I DEFINE IT.:
Clickers; Student Response Systems; Audience Response Systems
“Who Wants to be a Millionaire”; “Slumdog Millionaire”
Describe use at Loyola: depts. using it, profs and students’ observations and how they use it.
Quote professors:
-the clickers “wake up the class”
-teacher knows that when the students give a decisively correct answer, he can move on to another topic.
-A professor uses them for a short quiz at the beginning of each class which covers material from the last lecture or two. Quizzes can also be used to spur class discussion.
-another prof sometimes puts up a question and then lets the students talk to their neighbors prior to answering it (1-2 minutes).
Share data:
- The students have expressed liking the fact that all students participate
DATA/impressions from STUDENTS: 131 students, Dec. 2010
Brief survey
Do the clickers help you learn the material: YES: 76%; No 24%
They don’t like paying for them.
THE STUDENTS WITH THE MOST POSITIVE EXPERIENCES WERE IN CLASSES WITH PROFESSORS WHO HAD THE MOST POSITIVE EXPERIENCES.
These are merely a pedagogical tool. It takes YOUR time and effort to make them useful.
I emphasize this. That it’s merely a tool and THEY have to make it work. THEY have to WANT to use it.
2 ways to use the system: either Per-Event, or, the Complete System.
I describe suitcase system, what it can and cannot do.
you can collect group data about how the students answer the questions, and show results to the students,
you can’t get individual student data. Therefore, you can’t use this for attendance, or tests or quizzes.
Then, I describe COMPLETE system: students buy clickers; for quizzes, grading.
If you decide to use the complete system, or already know you want to do so:
You’ll attend a 2 hour training session with me
Contact the bookstore to ORDER CLICKERS IMMEDIATELY for your students.
I will work with registrar helping you get assigned to an enhanced classroom with a computer in it.
So, at the end of today’s session, you’ll know what you’d like to do, and you’ll let me know.
I explain and show the hardware involved. Base unit, flash drive (software), computer, clickers. Review costs. Talk about webclicker.
USING ICLICKER IN CLASS: My Instructor Intro Pp
I Use Pp to show various iClicker functions.
YOU CAN USE ANY APP WITH ICLICKER. It takes screen shots.
Using voting grid on/off
Histogram ON or OFF
Anonymous polling
Q on the fly
-I point out YOU DON’T NEED TO HAVE ANYTHING ON THE SCREEN TO DO A POLL! You can do it verbally or on the whiteboard. There will not be screen/image capture; but, you may remember the Q, and it’s good for spontaneous questions.
BRIEFLY, SHOW SETTINGS, esp. scoring (save this primarily for training)
IGRADER:
-Go through all aspects: General data; drill down to student data; HTML reports.
-Talk about Bb integration: iGrader and GradeBook.
iClicker can import your student roster from Blackboard
iClicker can export your students’ data to be imported into Blackboard’s gradebook.
REGISTRATION: DEMO Roll Call Registration; then go back to iGrader and show how their names replace the alpha numeric code.
Pre-Intro:
I create a roster file with the participants. That way, I can demo the registration process using their names.
THE RESOURCES: Go to iClicker Website:
-Downloads: software
-Support: user guides, FAQs for instructors AND for STUDENTS
-User Community
If they choose to jump in to using complete system, then I add that prof to the Excel spreadsheet. Get their name, class(es), classroom. TELL THEM TO CONTACT BOOKSTORE TO ORDER STUDENT CLICKERS FOR STUDENTS TO BUY. I also send their name to Michael Rachal.
WHO’S JUMPING IN???
If they choose to jump in to using complete system, then I add that prof to the Excel spreadsheet. Get their name, class(es), classroom. TELL THEM TO CONTACT BOOKSTORE TO ORDER STUDENT CLICKERS FOR STUDENTS TO BUY. I also send their name to Michael Rachal.
THE TRAINING:
Beforehand…
I create roster file
I create Pp (different than the intro Pp)
Give out:
Instructor kits: base unit, USB cable, blue clicker, customized thumbdrive (I’ll go over later what is in the thumbdrive). They keep these. (At the end of the session, I loan additional clickers for anyone who wants to practice.)
Handouts:
QuickStart for Windows or QuickStart for Mac
Instructor Homework and Suggestions
Review Basics: costs, etc.
Go thru HARDWARE SETUP.
I have them set up the equipment and then create a class (or two)… the actual classes that they will be using clickers in.
Go through settings and preferences.
Instructor clicker info: have them type theirs in.
I cover this as if we don’t have BlackBoard. Then later I explain how iClicker integrates with Bb.
Frequency settings: I explain what and why and how. I use a slide that I give them on their flashdrive. (show slide)
Scoring and Participation Points
REGISTRATION (Registering the students’ clickers):
DEFINE: associating each student with their unique clicker via the bar code# on the back.
Demonstrate 3 ways to register (roll call, manual, website)
Register using iClicker, not Bb.
How to create the roster.txt file. Have them create a dummy file and place it in their class folder.
IGRADER (Grading the students’ responses); Reports
GO THROUGH SYNCHRONIZATION INSTRUCTIONS: MUST HAVE THEM VOTE FIRST and then synchronize in iGrader.
iClicker /Blackboard integration-BRIEF: I point them to document, and show Bb setting.
1) REGISTRATION: Use the Bb gradebook instead of the roster.txt. as the data list to register students in iClicker. You export the Bb gradebook to serve as the roster. NOTE: Only your ‘Bb students’ will be included.
2) Registration process is the same (3 possible options)
3) Can download/upload grades from iGrader into Bb.
