The data revolution in education. Information Paper N. 39 March 2017 . UNESCO Institute for Statistics . The Agenda for Sustainable Development and Education 2030 present an ambitious new policy vision for the international education community. This vision places new demands on countries, especially producers and users of education data. For Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, “inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all,” the main challenge for countries is to measure and monitor targets that are characterised by their broad scope, the thematic focus on quality and equity, and the need to enhance national institutional and technical capacities. The production and dissemination of high quality education statistics is essential for effective planning, as well as for monitoring progress towards national and global education targets. For SDG 4, it is necessary to rely on a combination of data from administrative records, household surveys and learning assessments.

The 21st century education context is generally characterised by three elements that constitute what is called the 21st Century Learning Framework. As can be deduced the key-defining feature of 21st Century education is that it is learner-centred. The first element of such a framework is Content Knowledge, or Foundational Knowledge that regroups core content knowledge, ICT skills and inter-disciplinary knowledge acquisition and development. The second component is about Learning and Innovation skills, that can be referred to a meta knowledge. This is about the learner’s ability to demonstrate innovative and creative skills, problem solving abilities and critical thinking as well as soft skills (communication and collaboration). The third element concerns humanism or life skills and values. It enables learners to acquire necessary skills to deal with the complex life and work environment in the globalised and information-driven world.

This paper explores a sample of data collected from a UNICEF Eastern Caribbean rapid assessment on teaching and learning during the COVID-19 pandemic in eight countries. The primary investigation method was mixed and captured data from key participants/stakeholders in education using CAPI Technology and Video Conferencing tools. Statistical analyses and qualitative thematic analysis were conducted to report on findings using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences and Nvivo Qualitative Software. The data on online teaching and learning from Barbados was selected for further review and presented an opportunity to assess the Barbadian experience against other developing and developed countries. In assessing these perceptions in a sample of primary and secondary schools, stakeholders were generally dissatisfied with the online and blended learning modalities citing challenges relating to the equality and equity in access to devices and the enabling environment that facilities effective online teaching and learning.

Abstract This paper, part of which was presented at the 12th annual AMICAL conference at the American University in Bulgaria held in Blagoevgrad, on 29 May 2015, reports on a doctoral research project which explores the meaning and role of information literacy in higher education and lifelong learning. It also highlights an information literacy initiative at a Moroccan university, namely Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, and how its academic library strives to promote it. Living in an age of information tsunami and technological advancement, issues of information access, evaluation, retrieval and effective use, have become significantly critical in our societies. Directing the attention to the issue of information literacy and framing the best practices on how they can be best blended into the learning process of students are of paramount importance. Like other libraries across the globe, Mohammed VI Library at Al Akhawayn University in Morocco has realized the importance of information literacy and has worked in various ways to address this issue. This paper will describe the university strategy of teaching Information Literacy to graduate and undergraduate students in a number of ways. Recommendations to improve and support this initiative, including incorporating information literacy and skills across the university's curriculum, and fostering more effective partnerships between the Al Akhawayn university library and the teaching faculty, will be also discussed in this paper.

Title: “I feel like a grown-up person”: first year undergraduates’ experiences of inquiry and research. Professor Philippa Levy, Academic Director, CILASS, University of Sheffield. How do students experience inquiry and research in their first undergraduate year? What role does this experience play in the construction and evolution of their identities and intellectual development as learners? What can we learn from their experiences to inform the development of inquiry-based approaches to educational practice? This seminar will explore these questions through a presentation of some of the findings of a longitudinal, qualitative study of undergraduate students’ experiences of inquiry as they progress through arts and social sciences degree programmes at the University of Sheffield.
