The IoT solutions vertical market is characterised by three distinct traits. Manufacturing is the largest opportunity throughout the forecast, globally driven by
the fast acceptance of connected assets to drive early adoption. Health and Life Sciences may not be the largest vertical opportunity, but with the
significant investments being made by startups and the abundance of data to drive AI for healthcare outcomes, we forecast this vertical will have the
fastest growth rate. Finally, we forecast industry verticals where there are easily found end to end solutions to become strong 2nd tier verticals. After
manufacturing, these include Energy & Utilities, and Retail, Distribution & Consumer Goods. Note: There are several sub-markets in these vertical segments
that are growing double digits.

The Ecosystm IoT forecast reflects the maturing importance of ‘Hardware’ solutions and the ongoing challenges to monetise the ‘Services’
opportunity for IoT solutions. The sizing of the Hardware solutions are a direct result of a better view into the growing importance and range of
the IoT ‘Edge’ compared to the Enterprise and Cloud platforms. We believe that the Edge will mature into a very sizeable opportunity for
traditional hardware vendors teaming up with emerging embedded systems development startups. The sizing of the Services opportunities
reflects the challenge to fully monetise IoT-only solutions without pulling in added services from Digital Transformation initiatives or adjacent
requirements from technologies such as AI, Blockchain, etc .

By 2022, we expect the Asia Pacific region will have become the global center for IoT solutions. In particular, China will remain the leading
country market (a position that it has held for the duration of the forecast), even larger than the United States, and EMEA. China’s continuing
commitment to smart cities, manufacturing, transportation/autonomous vehicles, and healthcare will drive the need for massive amounts of

Methodology for Ecosystm IoT Global Forecast 2017 – 2022
The forecast data inputs consist of multiple variables including the projected number of IoT sensors to be connected to a
network, the spectrum of IoT connectivity protocols, the results of Ecosystm’s global IoT study with adoption rates and plans
within vertical industry segments, corporate earnings, macro economic reports, and in-depth interviews with best of breed
tech buyers who are delivering IoT solutions.
• We have minimised any double counting between existing ICT spend that can be reused for IoT projects (e.g Cloud,
Hardware, Network, Connectivity), and net new IoT spend.
• We have removed adjacent spending on ICT technology such as Analytics, Machine Learning, etc, and therefore isolate
IoT spend. Cross-IoT technology forecasts are available upon request.
The forecast will be updated on a semi-annual basis.

One of the great heavyweights of the analyst industry, Vernon serves as Ecosystm’s Executive Analyst,
covering all manner of technology industry-wide trends and emerging markets. A frequent speaker,
moderator, author and presenter for a number of leading media outlets, there are few who rival his
knowledge in ICT and his strategic vision in digital transformation – particularly in the manufacturing,
transportation, finance and banking communities.
Starting his career in client-side IT roles, Vernon entered the research world in 2000, joining IDC as
Group Vice President. Through the course of his 18 year tenure with the firm, Vernon’s remit evolved
from traditional ICT – including Networking, Servers, Storage, Virtualisation and Data Centres – to
becoming IDC’s first Research Fellow, specialising in The Internet of Things (IoT). He was presented with
IDC’s highest accolade in 2014, recognised for his passion, persistence and candid approach.
Beyond his work with Ecosystm, Vernon works with a number of venture capital firms as a technology
subject matter expert. He also sits on the IoT World Forum steering committee and previously
supported the governor for the State Of Illinois in developing a Smart State Initiative.
Vernon holds degrees in Computer Studies and Business Administration. In his free time, Vernon is a
sports fan, having competed in track and field at international levels. He’s also an active charity
runner, and recently completed his eighth consecutive marathon in a four year period.
