2. CONCEPT OF TRADE UNION
Trade union is:-
ï It is a association of wage earners or employees;
ï Whose principle purpose is to regulate the relations
between workers and employers;
ï whose leader is elected for the interests of the
employees within the workplace; and
ï recognized for collective bargaining.
4. ïProtective Functions-
ï These functions include protecting the workerâs
interests.
ï Bargain on issues like hike in wages, providing more
benefits or job security etc.
âą Fraternal functions-
ï These functions include providing financial and non-
financial assistance to workers during the periods of
strikes and lockouts.
ï Issues like medical facilities during slackness,
provision of education, recreational and housing
facilities, provision of social and religious benefits, etc.
5. ïPolitical Functions-
ïThese functions include affiliating the union to a
political party,
ïHelping the political party in collecting donations,
ïSeeking the help of political parties during the
periods of strikes and lock-outs.
âą Social functions-
ïThese functions include carrying out social
activities, discharging social responsibilities
through various sections of the society like
educating the customers etc.
9. ï Craft of skills union : To represent skilled
workers.
ï Industrial unions : To represent the members of
one particular industry.
ï General unions : Unions which recruit workers
from all types of industries and with any level or
range of skills e.g. â the Manufacturing Science
and Finance Union.
ï White-collar unions : Represent office workers.
