As Principal Investigator of the South Side Health and Vitality Studies (SSHVS), Dr. Lindau directs population-based biosocial and health technology research using a community-engaged, minimally-invasive approach. This project is the major research component of the University of Chicago Medical Center’s Urban Health Initiative, and it involves dozens of faculty members across biomedical and social science disciplines at the University of Chicago collaborating with civic leaders and community members living on Chicago’s South Side.

Here’s a way in which the body is used to effect social change – starvation used as a tool to move society.
Race gets under the skin – discrimination changes biology. More susceptible or more resilient? Fight or flight?

Figure source: McEwen, 1998. Protective and damaging effects of stress mediators. N Engl J Med. 338(3):171-9. McEwan is neuroscientist and neuroendocrinologist at Rockefeller Allostatic Load = cumulative, multisystem view of physiological toll exacted on the body through attempts at adaptation (McEwan and Stellar, AIM 1988) Reactivity Steady-state activity Costs of these adjustments builds up, culminating in cumulative identifiable damage that results in increased pathology (Seeman et al, 1997; Cacioppo et al, 2000) Note- negatively framed. Is allostatic load bad? What happens to allostatic load in situations of great pleasure, say orgasm or love?
The National Social Life, Health and Aging Project uses the interactive biopsychosocial model to hypothesize a bidirectional relationship between health and sexuality. In this framework, good health promotes sexuality and AND positive sexual activity and relationships promote good health. Ultimately, we aim to elucidate the biological and physiological mechanisms through which sexuality and health influence one another. Although we only have cross-sectional data at this point, our longitudinal hypothesis proposes that positive sexual activity and relationships promote health and mitigate illness as people age.
