2. Sintra Palace 辛特拉宮
The Sintra national palace is unique amongst the royal mediaeval palaces in Portugal and
the town’s most distinctive building.

Outside, the most striking and distinctive feature of the palace is the two large conical
chimneys of the kitchen, each measuring 33 metres high, now adopted as the symbol of
Sintra.

The Palace of Sintra (Portuguese: Palácio Nacional de Sintra), also called Town Palace
(Palácio da Vila Vila=Town) is located in the town of Sintra, in the Lisbon District. It is a
present-day historic house museum.

It is the best-preserved medieval royal residence in Portugal, being inhabited more or less
continuously from at least the early 15th century to the late 19th century. It is a significant
tourist attraction, and is part of the cultural landscape of Sintra, a designated UNESCO
World Heritage Site.

It was the original Grand Hall of the royal residence
of Joao I, built at the beginning of the 15th century.
During the reign of Manuel I it was designated as the
Hall of the Princes.
The former great hall is the largest room in the
palace where receptions, feasts and banquets, and
major ceremonies were held. It's known as the Hall
of Swans for the 27 wooden octagonal panels
painted with swans (cisnes) that adorn the ceiling.
Each swan wears a gilded collar and the birds are
set in graceful repose in naturalistic backgrounds.
天鵝廳
大廳 (Great Hall) 也就是天鵝廳（Swan Hall）。是若昂一世原來的皇室寢宮大廳，
建於15世紀初。在曼努埃爾一世統治時期，被指定為王子廳。

Constructed during the reign of João I, this antechamber is where dignitaries and foreign
ambassadors were received. Its name derives from the decoration painted on the ceiling -
136 jaunty magpies (pegas) painted on the wooden panels, each one holding in its beak a
shield with the king's motto, "Por Bem" - For Better, and, in one of its claws, a rose. The
majestic function of this room is exemplified by decorative pieces such as a beautiful 17th-
century Bargueño cabinet from Spain in walnut, golden metal, bone, and ivory.

The rounded wooden ceiling of the Galleon Hall is appropriately illustrated with paintings of
assorted ships in full sail representing the major naval powers of the period : Portuguese, Dutch,
and Ottoman flags and pennants are clearly visible fluttering in the wind. Various maritime cities
are also depicted. The long and narrow rectangular hall dates from the 17th century and is in
effect a small museum, with Spanish and Portuguese 18th-century earthenware particularly well
represented. A pair of exquisite Bargueño cabinets are also on display, one from the 18th century,
the other probably made in the 17th century. Both are beautifully crafted in wood, turtle shell,
ivory, velvet, and wrought iron.

46. This is the Coats-of-Arms Hall (Sala dos Brascoes). It was one of the major
additions built during the reign of Manuel I (1495-1521). The ceiling in carved
gilded woodwork is crowned by the royal coat-of-arms and is surrounded by the
armorial bearings of 72 noble families. Late 17th to early 18th century panels of
painted tiles depict courtly and hunting scenes.

57. The chapel was built during the reign of King Dinis at the beginning of the 14th century. During
the 15th century it was subjected to several alterations, including a decorated ceiling showing
Islamic influence, ceramic tile “carpet”, and wall frescoes. It was restored in the 1930s.
