Habakkuk 3.1-2, 16-19
17-For even if the fig tree does not blossom; and there is
no fruit on the vine; the product of the olive tree lies, and
the fields produce no food; the sheep of the flock are
taken away, and there are no cows in the pens,
18-yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will exult in the God of
my salvation.
19- Jehovah, the Lord, is my strength, and he will make
my feet like those of the deer, and make me walk on my
heights. […]
INTRODUCTION
We will end this quarter with the classic text of the prophet
Habakkuk. In it, the indispensable revival of the Church of
the Lord Jesus is revealed. The prophet's cry for revival for
his people must be the cry of the Church in these last days.
Never has there been a more pressing need for the Visible
Church to be mightily enlivened by God. The evil forces
tried to stop it, but they did not prevail because Jesus is the
owner of the Church.
KEYWORD: AVIVA
I- THE CRY FOR REVIVAL
1- The anguished intercession of the prophet. Habakkuk
suffered in the face of overwhelming iniquity in Judah. As God's
messenger, what he could do was cry out to the Lord with all his
heart. Furthermore, what distressed the prophet most was the
fact that he realized that God apparently had not acted promptly
against the spiritual and moral corruption of his people. The
prophet cried out to God, asking him why there was no response
to his cry in the face of violence, iniquity, destruction, strife and
litigation that he saw before his eyes (Hab 1.2-4).
I- THE CRY FOR REVIVAL
2- God's apparent indifference.* There is no difference from
God in man's impiety. Indeed, because of his mercy and
longsuffering toward transgressors, he does not act with
judgment now. Therefore, God sent Jesus with a message of love
to save man. But unfortunately, most turn their backs on God.
However, there will be a day when He will answer all who despise
His Word, as it is written: “The wicked shall be cast down to hell,
and all nations that forget God” (Psalm 9:17).
I- THE CRY FOR REVIVAL
3- God's ready answer. God's answer came quite differently from what
the prophet had expected. He, the Sovereign, decided to summon the
Chaldeans, or the Babylonians, to oppose the sins and iniquities of
Judah (Heb 1.5-8). The Chaldeans would be the sword of God, the
whip of heaven, to make Judah rethink its evil ways and convert from its
impieties that have already exceeded the limits of divine tolerance (Heb
1.8-11,13). Even if it seemed inert, in fact, God was giving time for the
Jewish nation to remember the divine warnings, but his people did not
remember. God told the prophet to write the vision in a very legible way
so that it could be seen even by those who ran by (Hebrews 2.213)
SYNOPSIS I
The cry for revival goes through a moment of
anguish before God who is not indifferent to
respond.
II- REVIVAL THROUGH THE WORD
1- Listen to the Word of God. In his prayer, Habakkuk
said, “Hear your word, Lord” (3:1a). He heard the Word of
God, that is, His answer as to the object of his prayer. God
spoke and Habakkuk listened attentively. It is necessary to
listen carefully to the voice of God to live a period of
spiritual revival. When God speaks, we need to listen.
II- REVIVAL THROUGH THE WORD
2- Fear God. Upon hearing the Word of God, Habakkuk feared
the Lord (3:2). You have to listen to God and fear him. There can
be no revival without the fear of the Lord: “The fear of the Lord
is the beginning of wisdom; good understanding have all those
who obey him; his praise endures forever” (Psalm 111:10). We
need to emphasize, however, that the fear of the Lord has
nothing to do with fear, dread or terror. The expression refers to
reverence for God in all spheres of life, a feeling of deep respect
before the Creator. Therefore, having a lifestyle that reveres the
Lord and “the beginning of wisdom” of the believer.
II- REVIVAL THROUGH THE WORD
3- The cry for revival. Habakkuk pleads with God to revive
his work: “Lord, I heard your word and was afraid; revive, O
Lord, your work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the
years make it known; in wrath remember mercy ′′ (Hb 3.2).
After the prophet understood that God's judgment would be
inevitable on the disobedient people, he listened to his Word
with fear and cried out to God for the spiritual revival of Judah.
The prophet made three requests to God in favor of the
spiritual restoration of his people:
II- REVIVAL THROUGH THE WORD
1) he called for revival for "his work";
2) asked God to notify his work;
3) asked God to remember mercy in his anger. Finally, the
prophet Habakkuk demonstrates a feeling of great hope,
faith and optimism (Heb 3.17-19).
SYNOPSIS II
Revival by the Word of God produces fear of the
Lord. By his Word, God's people are to cry out for
revival.
III- REVIVAL: A MATTER OF LIFE OR
DEATH
1- The cry for God's mercy. In addition to crying out for
revival, Habakkuk cried out for the Lord's mercy in the face
of the terrible consequences of divine judgment on the
unrepentant nation. It was a matter of life and death.
Hence, he pleaded, “in wrath remember mercy” (Heb. 3:2).
The prophet knew that, given the spiritual and moral decay
of the people, if God had no mercy, all these people would
perish before the weight of the Lord's hand on their evils.
III- REVIVAL: A MATTER OF LIFE OR
DEATH
2- God is merciful. The prophet Habakkuk knew that God hears
the prayers of people who sin, but who sincerely repent of their
sins and seek the face of the Lord. God is merciful! The Bible
reports the episode of David, who preferred to fall into the hands
of God because of his mercies: “Let me, then, fall into the hands
of the Lord, for his mercies are very many; but that I do not fall
into the hands of men” (1 Chronicles 21:13). Greater insight into
the merciful character of God had the prophet Jeremiah, when he
declared: “It is the mercies of the Lord that we are not consumed;
for his mercies never end ′′ (Lm 3.22).
III- REVIVAL: A MATTER OF LIFE OR
DEATH
3- Let us cry out to God. Today, we can say that moral
depravity in the world has become endemic. For the most
part, there is no longer the slightest feeling of shame and
shame. Inequity is not only practiced individually or by
groups, but is institutionalized, with legal support. A few
years ago, culturally authoritarian governments included the
institutionalization of abortion, false “gay marriage” and
gender ideology in their agendas.
III- REVIVAL: A MATTER OF LIFE OR
DEATH
Even more, there are “churches” that, claiming to be
Christian, approve of these abominations. On the pretext
of being “inclusive churches”, they accept moral depravity
as a norm and a given reality, claiming that “God is love
and, therefore, does not exclude anyone”. The Bible,
however, says, “Follow peace with all men, and holiness,
without which no one will see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14).
Surely, the judgment of God will not delay (Sl 9.17).
Therefore, we must pray the same prayer as the prophet
Habakkuk: “in anger, remember mercy” (Heb. 3:2).
SYNOPSIS III
Revival is a matter of the Christian's spiritual
survival.
CONCLUSION
Just as Habakkuk prayed to God, calling for a revival in his
work, we must also cry out to the Lord for a genuine and
powerful revival in the local churches. The spiritual and
moral situation of the world is similar or even worse than
in the prophet's time. We must cry for the mercy of God
for those who are stakering themselves on the faith and, in
many churches, approving of all abominations against God.
Let us solemnly cry out: “Alive, Lord, your Work”.

BIBLE READING IN CLASS Habakkuk 3.1-2, 16-19 17-For even if the fig tree does not blossom; and there is no fruit on the vine; the product of the olive tree lies, and the fields produce no food; the sheep of the flock are taken away, and there are no cows in the pens, 18-yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will exult in the God of my salvation. 19- Jehovah, the Lord, is my strength, and he will make my feet like those of the deer, and make me walk on my heights. • 7. INTRODUCTION We will end this quarter with the classic text of the prophet Habakkuk. In it, the indispensable revival of the Church of the Lord Jesus is revealed. The prophet's cry for revival for his people must be the cry of the Church in these last days. Never has there been a more pressing need for the Visible Church to be mightily enlivened by God. The evil forces tried to stop it, but they did not prevail because Jesus is the owner of the Church. KEYWORD: AVIVA
  • 8. I- THE CRY FOR REVIVAL 1- The anguished intercession of the prophet. Habakkuk suffered in the face of overwhelming iniquity in Judah. As God's messenger, what he could do was cry out to the Lord with all his heart. Furthermore, what distressed the prophet most was the fact that he realized that God apparently had not acted promptly against the spiritual and moral corruption of his people. The prophet cried out to God, asking him why there was no response to his cry in the face of violence, iniquity, destruction, strife and litigation that he saw before his eyes (Hab 1.2-4).
  • 9. I- THE CRY FOR REVIVAL 2- God's apparent indifference.* There is no difference from God in man's impiety. Indeed, because of his mercy and longsuffering toward transgressors, he does not act with judgment now. Therefore, God sent Jesus with a message of love to save man. But unfortunately, most turn their backs on God. However, there will be a day when He will answer all who despise His Word, as it is written: “The wicked shall be cast down to hell, and all nations that forget God” (Psalm 9:17).
  • 10. I- THE CRY FOR REVIVAL 3- God's ready answer. God's answer came quite differently from what the prophet had expected. He, the Sovereign, decided to summon the Chaldeans, or the Babylonians, to oppose the sins and iniquities of Judah (Heb 1.5-8). The Chaldeans would be the sword of God, the whip of heaven, to make Judah rethink its evil ways and convert from its impieties that have already exceeded the limits of divine tolerance (Heb 1.8-11,13). Even if it seemed inert, in fact, God was giving time for the Jewish nation to remember the divine warnings, but his people did not remember. God told the prophet to write the vision in a very legible way so that it could be seen even by those who ran by (Hebrews 2.213)
  • 11. SYNOPSIS I The cry for revival goes through a moment of anguish before God who is not indifferent to respond.
  • 12. II- REVIVAL THROUGH THE WORD 1- Listen to the Word of God. In his prayer, Habakkuk said, “Hear your word, Lord” (3:1a). He heard the Word of God, that is, His answer as to the object of his prayer. God spoke and Habakkuk listened attentively. It is necessary to listen carefully to the voice of God to live a period of spiritual revival. When God speaks, we need to listen.
  • 13. II- REVIVAL THROUGH THE WORD 2- Fear God. Upon hearing the Word of God, Habakkuk feared the Lord (3:2). You have to listen to God and fear him. There can be no revival without the fear of the Lord: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; good understanding have all those who obey him; his praise endures forever” (Psalm 111:10). We need to emphasize, however, that the fear of the Lord has nothing to do with fear, dread or terror. The expression refers to reverence for God in all spheres of life, a feeling of deep respect before the Creator. Therefore, having a lifestyle that reveres the Lord and “the beginning of wisdom” of the believer.
  • 14. II- REVIVAL THROUGH THE WORD 3- The cry for revival. Habakkuk pleads with God to revive his work: “Lord, I heard your word and was afraid; revive, O Lord, your work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make it known; in wrath remember mercy ′′ (Hb 3.2). After the prophet understood that God's judgment would be inevitable on the disobedient people, he listened to his Word with fear and cried out to God for the spiritual revival of Judah. The prophet made three requests to God in favor of the spiritual restoration of his people:
  • 15. II- REVIVAL THROUGH THE WORD 1) he called for revival for "his work"; 2) asked God to notify his work; 3) asked God to remember mercy in his anger. Finally, the prophet Habakkuk demonstrates a feeling of great hope, faith and optimism (Heb 3.17-19).
  • 16. SYNOPSIS II Revival by the Word of God produces fear of the Lord. By his Word, God's people are to cry out for revival.
  • 17. III- REVIVAL: A MATTER OF LIFE OR DEATH 1- The cry for God's mercy. In addition to crying out for revival, Habakkuk cried out for the Lord's mercy in the face of the terrible consequences of divine judgment on the unrepentant nation. It was a matter of life and death. Hence, he pleaded, “in wrath remember mercy” (Heb. 3:2). The prophet knew that, given the spiritual and moral decay of the people, if God had no mercy, all these people would perish before the weight of the Lord's hand on their evils.
  • 18. III- REVIVAL: A MATTER OF LIFE OR DEATH 2- God is merciful. The prophet Habakkuk knew that God hears the prayers of people who sin, but who sincerely repent of their sins and seek the face of the Lord. God is merciful! The Bible reports the episode of David, who preferred to fall into the hands of God because of his mercies: “Let me, then, fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercies are very many; but that I do not fall into the hands of men” (1 Chronicles 21:13). Greater insight into the merciful character of God had the prophet Jeremiah, when he declared: “It is the mercies of the Lord that we are not consumed; for his mercies never end ′′ (Lm 3.22).
  • 19. III- REVIVAL: A MATTER OF LIFE OR DEATH 3- Let us cry out to God. Today, we can say that moral depravity in the world has become endemic. For the most part, there is no longer the slightest feeling of shame and shame. Inequity is not only practiced individually or by groups, but is institutionalized, with legal support. A few years ago, culturally authoritarian governments included the institutionalization of abortion, false “gay marriage” and gender ideology in their agendas.
  • 20. III- REVIVAL: A MATTER OF LIFE OR DEATH Even more, there are “churches” that, claiming to be Christian, approve of these abominations. On the pretext of being “inclusive churches”, they accept moral depravity as a norm and a given reality, claiming that “God is love and, therefore, does not exclude anyone”. The Bible, however, says, “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14). Surely, the judgment of God will not delay (Sl 9.17). Therefore, we must pray the same prayer as the prophet Habakkuk: “in anger, remember mercy” (Heb. 3:2).
  • 21. SYNOPSIS III Revival is a matter of the Christian's spiritual survival.
  • 22. CONCLUSION Just as Habakkuk prayed to God, calling for a revival in his work, we must also cry out to the Lord for a genuine and powerful revival in the local churches. The spiritual and moral situation of the world is similar or even worse than in the prophet's time. We must cry for the mercy of God for those who are stakering themselves on the faith and, in many churches, approving of all abominations against God. Let us solemnly cry out: “Alive, Lord, your Work”.
