2. Transparent science and replication
• SCORE project: replicate the
findings of seminal articles.
• Kim et al. (2014) on gender
effects ICT literacy.
• Use secondary data from the
International Computer and
Information Literacy Study
(ICILS 2018)
• Result did not replicate…but
many, many research degrees
of freedom.
• Pre-registered, all R code
made available. Revising
article.
Interested in transparency, pre-registration, using R? Get in touch.
I lead the local UKRN soton network.
3. 2. Ofsted judgements
• Nuffield bid with UCL, through
1st round.
• Looking at the quality of judgements,
based on inspection reports.
• We use text-mining techniques,
in which a large corpus of documents
can be analysed at scale.
• This builds on Bokhove (2015) and Bokhove & Sims
(2020).
• Of course, hope it’s successful but one strand will
always include computational methodologies like these
(e.g. with recent ITT Market Review, thinking of doing
the same with ITE reports).
Interested in computational methods (text-mining, Social
Network Analysis) in your context? Happy to explore.
4. 3. Classroom resources
• Always one eye on School
Mathematics Project (SMP)
materials.
• Looking at collaboration with
Loughborough, who have a
large maths education
department.
• Focus on mathematics
education materials, but
several areas where overlap
with science.
5. School Mathematics Project materials
Student resources: 7-13, 11-16, post-16/UG
Teacher development: teacher guides, teacher
education
International component:
comparisons, UN goals
Digital layer for the materials
Interested in the use and design of resources in the classroom.
Design-based research as well.
6. UG maths misconceptions
• With Dr Dave Gammack,
Maths
• Calculus scripts
• Examine
mistakes/misconceptions
7. Immersive experiences
• I still am sad that our Augmented Reality plans with
Paulton’s Park never got funded.
• I mention it here because I still think it’s a great
idea.
Didn’t show the next slides, but as I was making a portfolio anyway
left them in the file.
8. International Largescale
Assessment
• PISA – Family composition and maths
• PISA – metacognition and reading
• PISA – resilience and science
• TIMSS – Bullying and maths
12. Social creativity
• With Xenos and Mavrikis
• Designing digital maths book
• Social creativity
• Paper four times rejected, so
yet again looking for another
outlet.
• The big challenge:
multidisciplinary work…
13. RiTE project
• Evidence-informed
teacher training
• Erasmus+ project
• Netherlands, United
Kingdom, Germany,
Poland
http://ddn-rite.eu/case-study-university-of-southampton/
15. Critical friend CLT
• With Hulshof, Utrecht University
• Cognitive Load Theory (CLT)
• Writing large overview of the history and development
of Cognitive Load Theory e.g. integration of
evolutionary psychology
• Uses the lens of Lakatos’ progressive and degenerating
programs
• It’s rather critical, highlighting a few worrying
developments
• We propose going back to the initial core ideas i.e. ‘CLT
in 1998’
16. • With Nic and Tony
• Covid-19 analysis of Understanding Society data
