Agenda
4. • What: Leadership Chapel Hill-Carrboro (Leadership), now in its 36th year, is an extensive program designed to
inform, develop, connect, and engage committed and emerging leaders in Greater Chapel Hill-Carrboro.
• Why: Leadership participants broaden their understanding of issues and opportunities facing the region, refine
their leadership skills, establish lasting relationships, and deepen their influence through ongoing networking
and service opportunities.
• Who: The cohort is made up of committed and emerging leaders who live and/or work in the region and
share a desire “For a Greater Chapel Hill-Carrboro.”
• When: The program features ten sessions over five months (summer, May-September). Most sessions are on
the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month.
• Where: Programming takes place throughout Orange, southwest Durham, and northern Chatham Counties and
in the Towns of Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Hillsborough.
• How: Leadership is a cohort-based learning experience that combines presentations, tours, experiential learning
activities, and facilitated dialogue.
• Topics: Sessions cover key community issues such as history and governance, the economy, education and
workforce development, economic and community development, health and human services, university
relations, safety and equity, arts, tourism, and the environment.

6. Informed: Broaden your understanding of issues and opportunities facing the region
• Deep dive into the data and discussions with decision-makers on important community issues.
• Guided bus tour through the region and tours of significant places, such as the IFC Community House in Chapel Hill, Riverwalk
and the historic courthouse in Hillsborough, OWASA Water treatment facility in Carrboro.
• Critical experiences, such as a police patrol ride along and other community passport activities.
Developed: Refine your leadership skills
• Leadership development workshops with Bell Leadership Institute and professional development workshops with pros like
Sharon Hill (business etiquette), Zemo Trevathan (communication), and Aaron Nelson (parliamentary procedures).
• Experiential learning activities, including high ropes course.
• Intention-setting at the start of the program and goal setting at the conclusion to maximize and continue your learning journey.
• Session word/concept of the day to stir reflection and deeper growth.
Connected: Establish meaningful and lasting relationships
• Programming that fosters connections with dozens of elected officials and community leaders.
• Learning teams and activities that create connections among cohort peers.
• Receptions and events with chamber members and Leadership alumni.
Engaged: Deepen your influence through ongoing networking and service opportunities.
• Regular invitations at the conclusion of each session to take action and get involved in the community.
• Opportunities to participate in Chamber networking events and programs.
• Small Miracle activity (community-based team project).

11. About: Community Passport is an individual project through which you complete at least four activities that are fun and designed
to help you get more informed, connected, and engaged in the local community.
Mandatory Activities (complete all three):
• Participate in a local law enforcement ride along
• Ride local public transportation
• Attend a local public meeting
Wildcard Activity (complete one of your choice):
• Host a local dinner using locally-sourced ingredients
• Submit an editorial to a local media outlet or speak about a local issue on a local radio station
• Take a selfie with three Orange County historical markers
• Volunteer with a local nonprofit organization
• Donate blood
• Attend a local performance or sporting event
• Check out a library book
• Other (feel free to propose a local activity for consideration)
Process: 1) Go to Guidebook for more information so that these activities are as simple and easy as possible for you, 2) complete
at least four activities total (3 mandatories and 1 wildcard activity of your choice), and 3) post a selfie of you completing each
activity on GroupMe and on social media (#Leadership2022). All four activities must be completed before Session 10 (September 1,
2022).
Community Passport

13. About: Small Miracles is a group project through which your cohort collectively selects a local nonprofit organization and
implements a fundraising plan to meet relevant organizational needs.
Purpose: The group project is designed to help you develop as a leader while also getting more informed, connected, and
engaged in the local community.
Objective: Raise at least $1,500 ($500 for a local nonprofit organization and $1,000 towards a partial scholarship for next year’s
cohort).
Process:
1) Select a partner(s) (by end of Session 2, May 12)
2) Each small group selects the local nonprofit for which they want to advocate (by Session 3, May 26).
3) Each small group delivers a very short presentation on their local nonprofit and the cohort selects one (Session 4, June 9).
4) The cohort collectively develops and implements the fundraising effort (before Session 10, September 1).

15. Pre-Survey: The Chamber evaluates the effectiveness of Leadership Chapel Hill-Carrboro through an annual pre- and post-survey
of participants. Your input help us determine to what degree Leadership delivered on its mission to help you become more
informed, developed, connected, and engaged in the Greater Chapel Hill-Carrboro community.
• Action: This pre-survey is now active is Guidebook and accessible in the dropdown menu. Please complete it prior to the start
of tomorrow’s session. I estimate that it will take no more than eight minutes of your time and we will respect your privacy.
Session Surveys: The Chamber issues a very quick survey at the conclusion of nearly all Leadership sessions to secure from you
what was fantastic and what was frustrating. Your timely feedback helps us continuously adapt and improve. Please take these in
Guidebook and, again, we respect your privacy.

16. About: The cohort will vote on a Class President(s), who will serve as the representative and spokesperson for the cohort at the
public graduation and other chamber events and serve as the lead connector for the cohort post-graduation to ensure continued
relationships and connections.
Attributes: This is not a popularity contest but rather a person/people who demonstrate certain attributes throughout Leadership
2022, including confidence with public speaking and natural aptitude for sharing information, coordinating events, and fostering
personal connections.
Process: The cohort will vote on the Class President during Session 8, Aug 11. If you are interested in the role, then you have the
next 8 sessions/three months to demonstrate your
