2. History
Defined in 1996 by the ITU (International
Telecommunication Union) it provides various
manufacturers a series of rules in order that they can
evolve together.
In many countries, multiple IP has generated discord,
between the territorial and legal on this technology.
It is clear and it should be clear that VoIP technology is
not a service as such, but a technology that uses the
Internet Protocol (IP) through which are compressed and
decompressed in a highly efficient data packets or
datagrams, to allow communication of two or more clients
through a network such as the Internet.
With this technology telephony services can be provided
or videoconferencing, among others.
3. How it works?
We assume that the two people who want to communicate with service
through a VoIP provider, both have analog phones connected through a
digital-analog adapter called ATA.
You pick up the phone , which sends a signal to the analog-digital
converter called ATA .
The ATA receives signal and sends a tone called, let them know you
already have Internet connection.
You dial the phone number of the person you wish to call , the numbers
are converted to digital by the ATA and temporarily stored .
The phone number data are sent to your ISP and VoIP . Computers
revise your VoIP provider to make sure this number is in a valid format .
The provider determines who is responsible for this issue and
transforms it into an IP address.
4. The provider connects the two devices involved in the
call. At the other end , a signal is sent to the ATA of the
person receiving the call so that it blows the other
person's phone .
Once the other person picks up the phone , a
communication is established between your computer
and the computer of the other person. This means that
each system is waiting to receive packets from other
system. In between, the Internet infrastructure handles
packet voice communication in the same way you
would with an email or a web page . Each system must
be running on the same protocol to communicate. The
systems implement two channels, one in each
direction.
When you end the call, hang up the phone . At this time
the circuit is closed .
The ATA sends a signal to IP Telephony provider stating
5. Example of implementations
Examples of VoIP include: Skype, Teamspeak,
TeamViewer, Twinkle, and Ventrilo. Which are second
generation providers.
Third generation providers, such as Google Talk have
adopted the concept of federated VoIP
Other examples of VoIP providers are: Ekiga,
Empathy, Cisco IP communicator, Blink, AOL,
Mumble, Vbuzzer, and Yahoo! Messenger.
Also there is Mobile VoIP clients, such as:
Acrobits groundwire, CSipSimple, iCall Mobile, Jajah
Mobile Web, Line2, Sipdroid, Tango, Windows mobile
phone 6, Yuilop, Vopuim, Bria, etc.
6. Related and future Technologies
VoIP is a relatively new technology and so the
benefits are just beginning to be realized. VoIP
technology has the ability to completely change the
telephone industry as we know it. Big changes are
in store for the way we use telephones and this
section will address some of the changes to expect.
Obstacles still stand in the way of progression and
there are problems that need to be addressed
before this technology can take over.
7. The emergence of smarthphones and the popularity
of mobile applications, mobile users can take
advantage of VoIP rates. Mobile VoIP Application
allows users to make local or international calls for
free or for fraction of the price of a normal call using
any internet or Wi-Fi connection.
Call rates may vary high enough to choose VoIP or a
Wi-Fi connection.
