Myths?
                      • Myth #1: The digital is separate from the “real” world.

                      • Myth #2: Social media makes kids deceptive.

                      • Myth #3: Social media is addictive.

                      • Myth #4: Kids don’t care about privacy.

                      • Myth #5: The Internet is a dangerous, dangerous place.

                      • Myth #6: There’s nothing educational about social media.

                      • Myth #7: Kids are digital natives.

“social networking actually declined among
Canada’s youngest consumers in the same

“Simply put, the lesson is there are few rules unique to
ensuring safety online, but rather, the rules are general
ones that should be applied online or off. In short, treat
an online environment much as you would a playground
        or park.”

"It's not primarily having a social networking profile or giving
out personal information that puts kids at risk. What puts
kids at risk are things like having a lot of conflict with your
parents, being depressed and socially isolated, being
hyper, communicating with a lot of people who you don't
know, being willing to talk about sex online with people that
    you don't know."

It’s not giving out personal information that puts kid at risk.
It’s not having a blog or a personal website that does that
either. What puts kids in danger is being willing to talk
about sex online with strangers or having a pattern of
multiple risky activities on the web like going to sex sites
and chat rooms, meeting lots of people there, kind of
behaving in what we call like an internet daredevil.

More Tips
There are many sites that have Tips for parents, educators
and teens regarding online safety & cyberbullying, most are
valuable, however, think before applying them - are they right
                    for you & your kids?

                                       Let’s look at a few more ...

here are some from the free booklet “Netcetera”

now let’s look at some from “ConnectSafely.org”

What do you think? Which work for you?
the most important thing from my perspective is to have a
                conversation with your kids...

What about ‘cyberbullying’?
"Cyberbullying involves the use of information and
communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated,
and hostile behaviour by an individual or group, that is intended
                          to harm others."

current school year. Among those, 27 per cent
say they had been bullied over the Internet.”

CyberBullying Videos

                          A powerful cyberbullying video

“Facebook is announcing a new suite of
tools to protect users from bullying, foster
a stronger sense of community in the
social network, and “create a culture of
         respect” among Facebook users.”
         from: http://mashable.com/2011/03/10/facebook-anti-bullying/

... however, I would not leave it to Facebook ... check
privacy settings, who your kids are ‘friending’ & what
                     they are posting.

“When I look at how teens hurt each other, I can’t help but also see how they’re developing
training wheels for future relationships and reflecting normative behaviors that they see
around them ... But they’re witnessing adult dramas all around them and what they
tend to see isn’t pretty. Parents talking smack about work colleagues or bosses. Parents
fighting with each other or ostracizing their family members over disagreements. And it’s not
just parents…Teens are seeing fights and dramas all over the media. ... Teens are seeing
drama everywhere – they’re seeing it as a legitimate part of adult society that can often lead
 to notoriety.”

“The issues here are systemic. And it’s great that the Internet is forcing us to
think about them, but the Internet is not the problem here. It’s just one tool
in an ongoing battle for attention, validation, and status. And unless we find
effective ways of getting to the root of the problem, the Internet will just
continue to be used to reinforce what is pervasive.”

bold is my emphasis. Excerpts from: danah boyd’s blog post “‘Bullying’ Has Little Resonance with Teenagers”, December, 2010

What puts kids at risk are things like having a lot of conflict with your parents, being depressed and socially isolated, being hyper, communicating with a lot of people who you don't know, being willing to talk about sex online with people that you don't know." What puts kids in danger is being willing to talk about sex online with strangers or having a pattern of multiple risky activities on the web like going to sex sites and chat rooms, meeting lots of people there, kind of behaving in what we call like an internet daredevil. But they’re witnessing adult dramas all around them and what they tend to see isn’t pretty. Parents talking smack about work colleagues or bosses. Parents fighting with each other or ostracizing their family members over disagreements. And it’s not just parents…Teens are seeing fights and dramas all over the media. ...
