In hopes to achieve its objective of using the International Halal Products Expo as well as the International
Halal Conference as a platform to offer unprecedented efficiency and effectiveness in educating the public
about halal products and services, the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources today held a Media
Conference at the Wawasan Room, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources building.
Panelists representing the Ministry at the Media Conference included the Director of Agriculture and Agrifood, Hjh
Normah Suria Hayati PJDSM DSU (Dr) Hj Mohd Jamil Al-Sufri; Special Duties Officer at Entrepreneurial
Development Centre, Asut Kadai; Interim chief executive officer of Ghanim International Food Corporation Sdn.
Bhd., Mr Noel Shield and Mr AbdalHamid Evans, Managing Director and Senior Analyst for global halal consultancy
Imarat Consultants.
The Media Conference began with the recitation of the Surah Al-Fatihah, followed by a brief introduction of
the International Halal Products Expo 2010 by the Director of Agriculture and Agrifood. Mr Noel Shield gave an
insight of the “Cooking from the Heart” Competition and on the “CEO Forum: Learning Journey”, while both Mr
Asut Kadai and Mr AbdalHamid Evans who are both the spokespersons for the International Halal Market Conference
provided an overview of the topics that will be discussed by the invited speakers for the conference.
Since it was first held in 2005, the International Halal Products Expo (IHPE) is considered as the Brunei
government’s top priority in its efforts to establish the sultanate as a premier halal centre. The launch of the
Brunei Halal Brand during the IHPE 2008 sets the standards for halal compliance and conformance in the
Halal Products Industry in Brunei Darussalam.
In 2009, the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources launched the Brunei Halal Brand and appointed Ghanim
Food International Corporation to provide a comprehensive supply-chain management system for the export of food
that are certified as being halal and of the highest standard in food safety management. With the government’s
campaign to be a major halal niche player through the Brunei Halal Brand, the sultanate has the potential to give
international companies a wider range of choices in identifying credible Halal certification processes at the same time
giving small and medium enterprises chances to collaborate with foreign partners.
This morning's event ended with a question and answer session from the media representatives in attendance.
