Hinweis der Redaktion

  1. I have always been mindful in choosing the activities that I become involved in outside of my job. Before I took the plunge in any of my leadership positions, I sought out people and organizations that could nurture my professional goals; initially, to just become a better teacher (NBCT). Then I wanted to be the best library media specialist (AASL / annual conferences, MCEMSA) that I could be and currently, my interested is focused on thriving as a leader; even in these tough budget times. I took a round about way to find SIGMS…here is my story!
  2. I believe that we should concentrate on action that is guided by our core values. I am guided by my own core values which include the idea that one has to give back in order to receive benefits so that an organization can sustain itself. My first blog was outside of the realm of school library media, but it kickstarted my online presence. I contributed learned so much from the virtual community of very generous volunteers first, then participated in a face to face conference, ultimately, I shared my own experiences through my blog and twitter feed. My values were also manifested in my position as a library media specialist. After a couple of years of achieving NBCT, I embarked on the online graduate certification from JHU. My online certification course through JHU (in collaboration with ISTE) provided a robust network of colleagues that I follow several years after the completion of the program. This virtual network has even materialized in f2f meetings at ISTE conferences. It was through my graduate work that I was introduced to this whole new group of professionals and I found out there was so much overlap with AASL that I felt comfortable when I found SIGMS. My first volunteer activity was to work in the playground at the DC conference. The next year I presented at a poster session. Currently I am the co-chair of the Webinar committee.
  3. I am a person who participates in a “Listen and Learn” kind of philosophy before I jump in and contribute. After I felt comfortable making connections, learning from others, I began to contribute to my new networked community and began two-way conversations instead of me just listening. When I gained confidence in understanding that I had something to contribute to the conversation and discovered the connection that the more people contributed, the richer the dialogue became. I found my “voice” through my passion…..and then I could use my voice in other areas. As I became more confident, I took more risks. I then transferred my newfound confidence and skills with social networking to my main passion, my career in library media. We all have something to say and while maybe not one of us knows the entire story, it is the parts of the story that we all have that make for virtual community that we can learn and grow from. My first smackdown was as a participant. I listened, learned, made connections and ultimately assisted in a state level smackdown with a friend who started out in my virtual PLN.
  4. Develop Others…when approached by Brenda Anderson to co-chair the webinar committee, I saw the value in contributing to the professional growth of others. I demonstrate this each year when I make connections with my alma mater, the university of Maryland by delivering presentations to graduate students on various topics (Collaboration, Online research, Developing yourself as a leader…). Through SIGMS, I assist in creating a slate of informative and up-to-date topics for our monthly webinar series. Last year, we developed a new liaison with SIGILT in order to deliver our 30-minute, one tool at a time, instructional technology webinars. The new issue of Kappan centers its articles on Professional Development and I will lift a quote from the article titled, “I learned to believe in me” by Kirsten Olson: “The experiences of great learners and resilient learners can teach individuals how to improve their own learning and show schools how to support learners of all kinds.”
