5. Mosesâ 40 years Progression
⢠For the first 40 years,
Moses thought he was
somebody
⢠For the next 40 years,
he realized he was a
nobody
⢠For the last 40 years,
he realized that God
could make nobody
into a somebody
6. The Protected Years
By faith Moses, when he
was born, was hid for three
months by his parents,
because they saw that the
child was beautiful; and
they were not afraid of
the kingâs edict. - Heb 11:23
22 And Moses was
instructed in all the wisdom
of the Egyptians, and he
was mighty in his
words and deeds.
- Acts 7:22
7. Point to Ponder
Why does Moses tell God he cannot speak when Acts 7
records that he is âmighty in words and deedsâ?
8. The Protected Years
27 But the man who was
wronging his neighbor
thrust him aside, saying,
âWho made you a ruler
and a judge over us?
28 Do you want to kill me
as you killed the Egyptian
yesterday?â 29 At this
retort Moses fled, and
became an exile in the
land of Midian.. (Acts
7:27-29)
9. The Protected Years â The Choice
24 By faith Moses, when he
was grown up, refused
to be called the son
of Pharaohâs
daughter, 25 choosing
rather to share ill-
treatment with the
people of God than to enjoy
the fleeting pleasures of
sin. â Hebrews 11:24,25
10. The Protected Years â The Choice
26 He considered
abuse suffered for
the Christ greater
wealth than the
treasures of Egypt, for he
looked to the
reward.27 By faith he
left Egypt, not being
afraid of the anger
of the king; for he
endured as seeing him
who is invisible. â
Hebrews 11:26,27
11. Palacial Training
Moses was chosen to
be trained in the cradle
of the most powerful
nation â as prince. He
was:
⢠Chosen by God
⢠Chosen by the Kingâs
daughter
Yet he:
⢠Chose God over the
King
12. The Rejected Years
35 âThis Moses whom
they refused, saying,
âWho made you a ruler
and a judge?â God sent
as both ruler and
deliverer by the hand of
the angel that appeared
to him in the bush
Acts 7
13. Providential Training â Contâd..
âHe chose David, his
servant
Handpicked him from his
work in the sheep pens
One day he was caring for
the ewes and their lambs,
The next day God had him
shepherding Jacob
His people Israel his prize
possession
His good heart made him a
good shepherd
He guided the people
wisely and wellâ Ps 78
14. Providential Training
At the end of Godâs
training Moses learnt:
⢠How to care like a
shepherd
⢠Humility â became âthe
most humble person on
earthâ (Num 12:3)
⢠Unconditional
Obedience
⢠Unconditional Faith
âWith great power comes
great responsibilityâ
15. Providential Training
Moses was ready to:
⢠Successfully deliver a
nation in the most
dramatic Exodus the
world has ever known
through circumstances
the world has never
seen.
⢠Be the voice of God to
a rebellious nation.
16. The Elected Years
36 He led them out,
having performed
wonders and signs in
Egypt and at the Red
SeaâŚ39 Our fathers
refused to obey him,
but thrust him aside,
and in their hearts
they turned to Egypt,
40 saying to Aaron, âMake
for us gods to go before
usâŚ. (Acts 7)
17. Purposeful Living
⢠Held the miracle rod
He wielded the greatest power and yet he
remainedâŚ.
⢠Most humble before God
⢠Inspite of greatest wealth of the world
⢠Inspite of greatest power of God
Now Moses was a very humble man, more
humble than anyone else on the face of
the earth. Numbers 12:3
18.
19. Purposeful Living
⢠Till the end, he had
all faculties intact.
⢠God himself buried
him..
⢠He appeared with
Elijah at the
transfiguration on the
promised land.

1. What is true humility? Define it in your own words.
2. Humility is tied to your identity. Discuss/ Enact scenario/s
of how even when humiliated you can react in confident
manner, and maintain humility. You may contrast it with
pride.
3. Did Mosesâs punishment of not being able to enter the
promised land strengthen his humility? Discuss.

27. Israel â The Chosen Ones
Generations after Abraham when the population had
multiplied into lakhs, rebellion set in:
ď§ Barring Moses, the next level leadership was tainted
(Aaron and Miriam)
ď§ The third level leadership corrupt
ď§ The conflict between God and His nation, reflects the
conflict between God and His church today.
28. Psalm 78 â Asaphâs Reflections on Israel
(The message Translation)God Israel
He set his word firmly in Israel,
commanded parents to teach to children
Ephraimites were cowards to Godâs covenant, refused
to walk by his Word. Forgot what heâd done right
before their eyes
He performed miracles, led them out All they did was sin even more, rebel against the High
God, clamored for favours, for special attention,
whined like spoiled children
God was furious, his anger flared, he lost
his temper
It was clear they did not believe God, had no intention
of trusting in his help
God helped them, opened the gates of
heaven, handed everything they craved
on a platter
Greed knew no bounds
God was fed up, cut down their brightest
and best
Kept on sinning, still wouldnât believe, lives dribbled off
to nothing
Cut them down Came running for help, turned and pled for mercy,
witnessed that God was their rock, lied through their
teeth, could not have cared less about him
Compassionate, forgave their sin, didnât
destroy, over and over restrained his
wrath
Time and again pushed him to the limit, provoked
Israelâs Holy God. Quickly forgot
29. God Israel
Scattered everyone who got in his way,
staked out an inheritance for them
Kept on giving him a hard time, rebelled, worse then
their parents, crooked as a corkscrew..pagan orgies
provoked Godâs anger, idolatories broke his heart
Furious, walked off, abandoned the
shrine where he had met them, turned
his back on the pride of his life, turned
them loose on the battlefields, let them
fend for themselves
Young men went to war and never came back, young
women waited in vain, priests were massacred,
widows never shed a tear.
The Lord was up on his feet. Hit his
enemies and sent them running.
Disqualified Joseph and chose Judah.
Built his sanctuary, chose David
âAnd you continue, so bullheaded! Calluses on your
hearts, flaps on your ears! Deliberately ignoring the
Holy Spirit, youâre just like your ancestors. Was there
ever a prophet who didnât get the same treatment?
Your ancestors killed anyone who dared talk about the
coming of the Just One. And youâve kept up the family
traditionâtraitors and murderers, all of you. You had
Godâs Law handed to you by angelsâgift-wrapped!â
and you squandered it!â Acts 7:51-53
Psalm 78 â Asaphâs reflections on Israel
ContâdâŚ(The Message Translation)
30. ..In their hearts they turned to Egypt
Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside, and
in their hearts they turned to Egypt, (Acts 7:39)
31. In their hearts they turned to Egypt..
"These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are
far from me.â Matthew 15:8
32. âIn their hearts they turned to Egyptâ
âA whole new generation of Christians has come up
believing that it is possible to accept Christ without
forsaking the world.â AW Tozer
âOur standard of living has gone up, but are we really better
off? 40 years of consumerism and media influence has
created a basic shift in values. Overall we live in a culture
dominated by the secular life view.â Pat Morley â Man in
the mirror
33. Dangers Today - Deeds without Love
Ron Jensen travelled around the country with his wife in a
camper and interviewed 350 Christian leaders. At the end of
the tour he made a discouraging observation. He said âI
found a great deal of zeal for Godâs work, but very little
passion for Godâ.
âŚ. 4 But I have this against you, that you have
abandoned the love you had at first. Rev.2:2-4.
34. Dangers today - âProsperousâ? Christians
You say, âI am rich. I
have acquired wealth
and do not need a
thing.â But you do not
realize that you are
wretched, pitiful, poor,
blind and naked
(Rev.3:15-17)
35. Prosperity in Soul
3 John 1:2 : "I wish
above all things
that you may
prosper and be in
health, even as
your soul
prospers."
37. Leanness of Soul
One year the Standard
Oil Company had a
stunningly beautiful float
in the Pasadena rose
parade. Right in the
middle of the parade,
the float ran out of gas!
38. Leanness of Soul
In the desert they gave in to their craving; in the wilderness
they put God to the test. And he gave them their
request; but sent leanness into their soul. Psalm
106:14,15
39. Leanness in Soul
Itâs better that God
denies something
in love than gives
something in
anger
40. The Spread of Godâs word
Even larger world â
Jesus came -
Godâs word
reached the worlds
Larger
world â
Godâs word
reached
Israel
Small world
- Godâs word
reached
individuals
Men and women of God were
vehicles, world deteriorated to
âdays of Noahâ
Israel was the vehicle,
Nation divided and
scattered. Temple
was destroyed and
captured
Church vehicle
Growing
âleannessâ will
bring world to the
condition
of âdays of Noahâ
Second coming of Christ will finally end this cycle â Satanâs kingdom will be
destroyed forever and God will rule forever
42. Discussion/ Activity
It is a challenge while we wait on earth on our journey to
heaven.
⢠What is the soul? What is prosperity of soul? What is
leanness of soul?
⢠How can we truly enjoy âprosperity of soulâ? Enact

45. The OT Law
There was given hundreds of laws for the people, these
laws were divided into three phases [1]:
⢠Moral Laws (10 Commandments written by the finger of
God),
⢠Civil Laws (Dietary and Judicial also), and
⢠Ceremonial Laws (Sacrifices, Feast Days, etc.).
46. Summary of the Law
35 Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question,
testing Him, and saying, 36 âTeacher, which is the great
commandment in the law?â
37 Jesus said to him, ââYou shall love the Lord your God
with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your
mind.â38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And
the second is like it: âYou shall love your neighbor as
yourself.â40 On these two commandments hang all the
Law and the Prophets.â Matt 22
47.
48. ..the Greatest is Love
âA new commandment I
give to you, that you
love one another;
as I have loved you,
that you also love one
another. By this all will
know that you are My
disciples, if you have
love for one another.â
John 13:34,35
49. ..the Greatest is Love
In John 21 : In His last
meeting with His
disciples, Jesus says to
Peter: "Do you love
Me more than
these? Feed my
sheep!"
50. .. the Greatest is Love
âI know your deeds, your hard work and perseverance. I
know that you cannot tolerate wicked men, that you have
tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and
have found them false. You have persevered and endured
hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. Yet I
hold this against you. You have forsaken your
first loveâ .Rev.2:2-5. - Church in Ephesus
51. Jesus raised the barâŚ.
In the New Covenant, Jesus raised
the bar on:
⢠Love
⢠Law
⢠Living
52. Old Covenant vs. New covenant
Love the Lord your God
with all your heartâŚ
Love your neighbour as
yourself
Law
Written on stone
and paper
Atoned for
deeds (Letter of
the law)
Call to be holy
Love the Lord your God
with all your heartâŚ
Love one another as I
have loved you
Grace
Written on
hearts
Atoned for on
mind and heart
(spirit of the
law)
Call to be
disciples and
make disciples
53. Grace?
What does âyou are not under the law but graceâ mean?
..offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument
of righteousness.14 For sin shall no longer be your
master, because you are not under the law, but under
grace. â Romans 6
54. Law (Sin consciousness) vs Grace (God
Consciousness)
.. 6 But now, by dying to what once bound us, we
have been released from the law so that we serve
in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the
written code. â Romans 7
55. Law (Sin Consciousness) vs. Grace (God
Consciousness)
Grace is not:
⢠freedom to sin
Grace is:
⢠freedom from sin
56. The Law â Written on our Hearts
Psalms 119:11 - Your word have I hid in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.
Ephesians 4:23 - And be renewed in the spirit of
your minds.
Jeremiah 31:33 â âThis is the covenant.. I will put my law
within them and I will write it in their hearts and will
be their God and they shall be my people.â
57. The Law â Written on our Hearts
Psalm 139:23-24
Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me
and know my thoughts! And see if there be any
grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!
Romans 1:28
And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God
gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought
not to be done.
58. The Law â Written on our Hearts
And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom
but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to
those who are spiritual. The natural person
does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they
are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them
because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual
person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no
one. âFor who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to
instruct him?â But we have the mind of Christ. - 1
Corinthians 2:13-16
59. Spirit of the Law vs. Letter of the Law
5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds
set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in
accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on
what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind governed by
the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit
is life and peace. 7 The mind governed by the flesh is
hostile to God; it does not submit to Godâs law, nor can it
do so. Romans 8
60. Acid test of spirit of God
Is our mind
governed by the
spirit or by the flesh?
61. Spirit of the Law vs. Letter of the Law
21 Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us,
we have confidence before God 22 and receive from him
anything we ask, because we keep his commands
and do what pleases him. 1 John 3
62.
63. Assurances
We know that anyone born of God does not continue
to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them
safe, and the evil one cannot harm them.1 John 5:18
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those
who are in Christ Jesus, Romans 8:1
64. Warnings
Yet I hold this against you. You have forsaken your
first loveâ Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and
do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will
come to you and remove your lampstand from its
place.Rev.2:2-5.
22 Many will say to Me in that day, âLord, Lord, have we not
prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in
Your name, and done many wonders in Your
name?â 23 And then I will declare to them, âI never knew
you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!â Matt.
7:21-23
65. The Great Commission
âCall to Be Disciples and Make Disciples
18 And Jesus came and
spoke to them, saying, âAll
authority has been given to
Me in heaven and on earth.
19 Go therefore and make
disciples of all the nations,
baptizing them in the name
of the Father and of the Son
and of the Holy Spirit, 20
teaching them to observe
all things that I have
commanded you; and lo, I
am with you always, even to
the end of the age.â Amen.
68. Summary
What is the difference between the old and new covenant?
⢠The old covenant (Torah) was for a nation and included
civil, dietary, legal, ceremonial, moral and spiritual
commands.
⢠The civil, dietary, legal aspects are not relevant to us, as
Jesus asked us to submit to the current Governing
authority who will take care of those
⢠Ceremonial practices do not outdo the inner cleansing.
While Jews may still follow them, Baptism and Holy
Communion are the sacraments Jesus instituted for us.
⢠The moral and spiritual commands are valid but
standards are higher as God judges the heart and the
spirit of the law.
69. Discussion
⢠What are some misconceptions on grace you have had?
⢠Given the right perspective, how would your walk with
God change?
⢠Enact a scenario on how grace increases your capacity to
meet the increased standards.
History records he may have stammered due to an injury in childhood on his tongue. However Acts 7 record shows that his knowledge and action overcame his defect to the extent he was considered mighty in words and deeds. His imprudent speech to Israelite may have significantly slaughtered his confidence. This on the flip side enabled him to acquire is world famous humility.
Moses, in addition to the negative publicity, was outrightly rejected by the resort of the Israelite..âwho made you are ruler over us?â ..He was groomed for this occasion and had rejection slapped on his face. He continued to face it all his life from the Israelites.
Notice â parentâs faith when they were ânot afraidâ of king and Mosesâ faith, not afraid of the King.
Moses was chosen to be trained in the cradle of the most powerful nation â as prince, while others his age were getting mass murdered
Chosen by God
Beautiful before God
Chosen by the Kingâs daughter
Trained in the palace
Mighty in words and deeds(acts 7:22)
Chose God over the King
Chose to suffer with his people as opposed to enjoying fleeting pleasures of sin
Considered abuse for Christ greater than the treasures of Egypt
Left Egypt not fearing the king but endured, following the invisible God
Knew he was deliverer and assumed his people knew it as well
David too, wa s a shepherd before he was a leader â God used it as part of his training to shepherd the flock of Israel.
The Shepherd role can be seen in others as well, eg. David, Jesus.
Humility could be attributed to Godâs hot and cold treatment
At the wave of his rod, the heavens descended, the earth erupted and the seas parted. On the one occasion he misused it by not trusting, God penalized himâŚseverely
Dr Ron Charles mentions that Egypt had 90% of the worldâs wealth. Israel walked away with most of it ie most of the worldâs wealth in that timeâŚ.
legend has it that he may have even been taken up by God under a cloud at mount Nebo from where he had a view of the promised land.
God
He set his word firmly in Israel, commanded parents to teach to children
God
He set his word firmly in Israel, commanded parents to teach to children
Israelâs bondage to Egypt typifies our bondage to Satan
Mosesâ deliverance typifies Christâs deliverance.
"These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.â Matthew 15:8
Even Mother Teresa struggled with experiencing God. âI am told God loves me â and yet the reality of darkness & coldness & emptiness is so great that nothing touches my soul.â - See more at: http://www.patheos.com/blogs/daylightatheism/2007/08/mother-teresas-loss-of-faith/#sthash.dmfWwiJX.dpuf. Even if we donât âfeel Godâ, it is important that our faith drives our works and that we are persistent.
Of primary importance is prosperity of soul others are secondary
J. Vernon McGee tells of an incident in the Pasadena Rose Parade. That year the Standard Oil Company had a float in this parade of parades. The float was beautiful, fully decorated with American Beauty Roses, something that J. Vernon McGee says he "shall never forget". He had not seen anything that beautiful before, nor has he seen anything as beautiful as that since that time.
The problem developed right in the middle of the parade. To everyone's surprise the float ran out of gas! A humorous story if it wasn't so applicable to the church and to our lives today!
Can you imagine that? Here, this Standard Oil Company float completely runs out of gas, unable to move, and when the crowds recognized what had happened, they began to laugh at the situation. Of all the floats that were in the parade, the Standard Oil Company float should have been the last one to run out of gas!
In fact, the float should have had enough gas for the entire parade and beyond. The problem was that someone forgot to fill the tank with gas, and there it stood, motionless, in the middle of this parade.
And J. Vernon McGee said that "As I looked at that poor, helpless float, and I heard everyone laughing, I felt sorry, because it was like the church of today. We are beautiful, decorated in style with all of our buildings, our programs, our services, and our propaganda, but we have no power. Power is what the church needs, and power is what each individual believer needs."
(example of software - soul vs hardware which is body)
Loving others means bringing others to the cross
Jesus highlights the importance of nourishing with the word of GodâŚas a sign of God
Mother Teresa had once commented that she has never been able to âfeelâ Christ. ????
The English language interpretation of grace is actually opposite to Godâs interpretation of grace. Eg. Grace marks, grace period
Christ fulfilled the letter of the law and taught us to fulfil the spirit of the law â Becka Goings
