9. TRANZFOR project - context
• rapid climatic change, a contemporary reality (4th IPCC report
2007)
• major role of forests and forestry in influencing earth systems
(CBD, UNCCD, UNFCCC, 2008)
• sensitivity of forest resources and forest-based sector to CC:
• increasing biotic and abiotic disturbances
• variations in productivity (+/-)
• mitigation of CC through renewable wood-products and energy
• deforestation and GHG emissions (# 20% - 1990s)
Rapid Climate Change is a major issue for future forests and
a key theme in policies and research strategies at national, EU
and international level

10. TRANZFOR project (1)
aim :“strengthening research partnership through
staff exchanges, networking and dissemination
activities”
– within an integrated framework and a comprehensive long term
joint programme on forestry & climate change
– on the basis of bilateral cooperation and complementarities
between 5 individual countries and partners
– balanced exchange of 75 staff members for periods ranging from
2 to 12 months over 4 years
TRANZFOR mid-term workshop - Hobart
15/10/2010
11. TRANZFOR project (2)
• focus on forests, forestry and climate change
interactions
• assessment of impacts of CC and development of
adaptation and mitigation strategies
• 5 partners’ countries share common features:
– key tree species of common interest
– Mediterranean to temperate biogeographic conditions in N and S
– strategic importance of planted forests for wood-based sector
TRANZFOR mid-term workshop - Hobart
15/10/2010
12. TRANZFOR project (3)
• Genomics and tree breeding strategies (WP1): for the groups of species of common
interest, characterize diversity of adaptive traits, identify adaptive genes of likely
significance in the changing climates and integrate into breeding programme.
• Forest models (WP2): enhance quality and consistency of forest modelling for the
simulation at various scales of forest resources dynamics under alternative
management and climatic scenarios.
• Environmental services (WP3): evaluate effects of changing climate on main
environmental services provided by forest ecosystems (carbon sequestration,
biodiversity conservation, water regulation, soil protection)
• Risk assessment (WP4): assess main abiotic (wind, fire, drought) and biotic (pest
insects, pathogens) risks under changing climate, and develop simulation tools to
evaluate the sensitivity of forests to hazards under alternative management strategies,
integration of risk management in Sustainable Forest Management.
• Bioenergy (WP5): develop sustainable management strategies and quality standards
for dendro-biomass production and renewable supply of ligno-cellulosic biomass to
substitute for fossil fuels.

13. TRANZFOR project (4)
added-value and gained knowledge will be mainly obtained from:
(1) exchange of ideas, concepts and methodologies;
(2) exchange of data and cross-validation of models ;
(3) application and test of conceptual and generic models in contrasted
situations;
(4) comparative analysis of data and research results and joint synthesis
and publications.
It is expected that there will be a joint publication for each topic and
partner, giving a total of 15 Joint Publications in Peer-reviewed
scientific Journals.

Work package title Genomics and Tree Breeding Strategies
Partner short name INRA
Objectives
exchange and increase knowledge on adaptive genes of likely significance in changing climates and integrate into breeding programme
for key forest tree species of common interest.
Description of work
Activities will include staff exchange, joint research and networking, and will be organised in three main tasks:
Task 1.1: characterization of the diversity of adaptive traits (e.g. bud phenology, disease resistance, tolerance to abiotic constraints...),
as well as of related candidate genes with emphasis on comparative approaches of the same traits and genes in different forest tree
species of common interest.
Task 1.2: review and adaptation of breeding strategies, using description of gene and trait diversity in trees of common interest for
optimising the choice of plant material for the regeneration of forests with respect to expected altered climate conditions.
Task 1.3: identification of tree species potentially adapted to expected climate and environmental changes over the next 100 years in
Western-Southern EU and Australasia.
Work will combine complementary approaches such as assessing and modelling environmental response functions in contrasted
situations, identifying the genetic control of traits and response functions, detecting QTL, developing association studies, and
gene / protein expression profiling, and comparative analysis of breeding strategies.
Deliverables
D1.1: joint seminar at EU scientific conference on challenges of forest regeneration faced with climate change (yr 2)
D1.2, 1.3, 1.4: joint publications on (1) adaptive traits and related genes, (2) optimisation of breeding strategies, and (3) future tree
species (yrs 2, 3, 4)

Work package number 6 Start date or starting event: Month1
Work package title Project management
Partner short name INRA
Objectives
ensure project objectives are fulfilled and deliverables provided according to time schedule through co-ordination of staff exchange and
WP activities, and effective dissemination.
Description of work
Work will include project management activities and related exchanges, as well as dissemination activities, and will be organised in
three main tasks:
Task 6.1 : organisation of 3 project workshops (kick-off, mid-term, final)
Task 6.2: elaboration of annual operational plans of exchange & activities, and preparation of progress reports (interim and final
reports for each reporting period)
Task 6.3: dissemination including setting-up and maintenance of a dedicated website, production of dissemination material (leaflets,
posters) and coordination of project seminars and publications.
The PMT (project management team) will update the exchange scheme jointly on a yearly basis and an annual operational plan of
exchange and activities (OPEA) will be prepared at the start of each year. A mid-term review will be conducted to ensure objectives of
the programme are being met and that future exchanges in the programme are well planned and resourced. During the project duration,
it is anticipated that the PMT will physically meet three times in combination with TRANZFOR workshops; otherwise, quarterly
telephone meetings will be organised as necessary.
Deliverables
D6.1 : TRANZFOR dedicated website (yr 1)
D6.2 (1, 2, 3, 4): annual operational plan of exchange (yrs 1, 2, 3, 4)
D6.3 (1, 2, 3, 4): progress report (interim and final reports - yrs 1, 2, 3, 4)
D 6.4: TRANZFOR leaflet
