2. WebDewey We have subscribed to WebDewey in order to eliminate the need for multiple paper copy sets of the Dewey 22 manuals Each cataloguer/library technician will receive their own login and password
3. Logging In www.connexion.oclc.org Your login will consist of a 9 digit number: 123-456-789 You will be issued a temporary password. Please change it immediately to something you will remember!
4. Search vs. Browse Searching is useful when you have a very specific term that is unlikely to bring up multiple results For example, specific countries are located quickly using the Search feature In the Search screen, you can enter your search term in the “Search for” box and click on “Search”
7. Search Example From the search on the previous screen, we can see that by entering the search term “Canada”, we receive only one hit, T2—71 For more general searches, using the Browse function may serve more useful
8. Browse Browsing is more useful for general search terms as it brings more “hits” and allows you to browse for the best possible match From the Browse main screen, you can choose from Dewey Numbers, Relative Index, and LCSH (plus 2 others not used in HDSB)
10. Browse by Dewey Number This feature is useful when you have a Dewey number you aren’t sure about Also useful for finding broader or narrower Dewey numbers Allows you to see if the number you have chosen is the “best fit”
12. Dewey Results From the previous example, typing in the number 685.4 brings us the result “Gloves and mittens” We can see a narrower term is 685.4092, “Glove makers” By clicking “Previous page” we can see a broader term is 685, “Leather and fur goods, and related products”
14. Dewey Results Clicking on the desired Dewey number brings up a summary page listing related terms, authorized LCSH, relative index terms, and any applicable notes
16. Browse Relative Index Browsing the relative index is identical to searching the back index of the DDC Manuals (only faster!) Click on the Relative Index button on the Browse screen and enter your term
18. Relative Index A search for “Glaciers” brings back multiple hits which you can scan to determine the best match for the item you are cataloguing Each “hit” also provides a corresponding Dewey number for you to choose from Clicking on each Dewey number brings up the same summary page from the Dewey search
20. Browse LCSH Finally, the LCSH browse functions almost identically to the Relative Index search A search for “Winter” brings back all related LCSH terms beginning with “Winter” and terms alphabetically nearby
22. Browse LCSH Results, Cont’d Clicking on any of the Dewey numbers connected to the LCSH’s will bring you back to the same summary screen in the previous two examples
