- I love this video. It helps focus our minds on the future and how megatrends such as population growth, migration, inequality etc. could have a significant impact on the future. Technology is one of these megatrends and the one I’m going to focus on today.
- Segway into our research and stress that UK CEO’s believe that they will be disrupted by emerging tech in the next FIVE years! Interestingly, this figure is actually a little higher than the global average, which stands at 64%. Our survey shows that they are clear about the importance of emerging technologies to key areas of their own businesses. They understand the need to identify and acquire key skills and to make disruptive technologies work for them in achieving competitive advantage. PwC’s research shows that Artificial Intelligence could add £232 billion to the UK economy by 2030, through gains to productivity and product enhancements which will stimulate customer demand. CEOs clearly understand that emerging technologies will be disruptive, but that they also open up many new opportunities. Large organisations - (greater than $7 billion turnover per annum) risk up to 53% of their revenues to disappear due to digital disruption over the next 5 years.
- Technology is no longer simply an enabler that supports more efficient processes which in turn secure competitive advantage. Technology is increasingly the source of competitive advantage itself. Scale of the enterprise is no longer a de facto source of competitive advantage. Digital technology today is more abundant, cheaper and more modular than ever before. Its predecessors were the exact opposite. Younger generations born into a digital world approach technology differently and more comfortably. For them, technology is not simply a tool. Millennials engage with technology as a form of ‘natural language’.

Internet of Things (IoT) – Network of objects (devices, vehicles, etc.) embedded with sensors, software, network connectivity, and compute capability, that can collect and exchange data over the Internet. Augmented reality (AR) - Additional information or visuals to the physical world, via a graphics and/or audio overlay, are overlayed to improve the user experience for a task or a product. Data is pervasive across all areas.

- For any organisation to make the most effective use of drone technologies, it will need to develop a data-driven culture that blends intuition and analytical insights with a focus on making practical and actionable decisions. In this context, demand for data scientists, robotics engineers and other tech specialists is clearly growing, so it will be vital to refocus long-term training and development to these emerging needs. Also, as adoption of drones and related technologies such as AI gathers pace, we’re seeing an increase in the value of those human skills that can’t be replicated by machines. These include creativity and leadership.
