Emotional Branding= Loyal Followers
Good Afternoon everyone. My name is Ginger King and I will be talking about Branding & Marketing Strategies from An Aspiring Shark. Who can tell me who is this lady in yellow or blue in the other picture- Barbara Corcoran from Shark Tank! That’s right Barbara! Now, we can tell me who’s Ginger King???? How many of you have googled me?
If you have googled me, you may find me in various social networking site. From my twitter, you know I am a huge shark tank fan. From my facebook, you know I love cosmetics. From my linkedin- you know I have over 17 years of experience in cosmetics. From Pinterest, you know I am a co-founder of GrandCentralBeauty. I am also a blogger and a beauty expert on new beauty. As a MBA student, you need to be able to look up everyone you come across and research them, no different than you study on everything about a potential employer. In order for others to find you, you have to be active on social media.
Why I titled this presentation as an Aspiring Shark? Barbara Corcoran is my personal idol and I have met her twice. I study her and I emulate her. In one of the meetings in front of 500 people, she actually declared that among all business idea presenters, I am the one she would invest. This is my elevator speech that wowed her:You can wait for recession to be better but your lines and wrinkles can’t wait. I am the cosmetic chemist who created clinically proven grandcentralbeauty products which will give you smart skin in 15 minutes. I got her with a “hook”, “credibility” and “benefits, WITFM”. Now, think about what you can do to create your own elevator speech.
Now let’s talk about what is branding:If you can not be googled you don’t exist. How do you sustain your brand- follow your passion. Must love what you do in order to build your brand. Be persistent- Follow our dreams or you will be paid to follow others dream Huge on-line appearance.Don’t tell me it’s not possible to spend extra time on line because of your course loads or whatever, remember, the word impossible actually says I am possible.
How exactly do you brand:First impression is critical. Now what you know but how you present. Can your listener feel your drive and want to engage with you? Enhance visibility- it’s not what you know but who knows you. I have over 1700 connections on linkedin. Do I know all of them? No. But, many opportunities keep coming my way because I am “visible” and regarded as an expert in the field.Follow industry elites- Study/copy them. Who are your mentors? You don’t have to have a real person or formal commitment. You can have a mentor just by studying what they preach. Increase connections- the more people you know, the more opportunities will present iself. I am particular on linkedin- I only connect people in beauty. All else, please just follow me on twitter.Build credibility= trust= write books/blogs/present at trade shows.
Let’s talk about marketing. We all know the marketing 4p’s. But as a business owner, I am compelled to add another 2ps’s which are very critical especially if you are interested in doing consumer products.Quickly go over the 4P using GrandCentralBeautyPlace- knowing your distribution channel sets the entire frame of work for your branding. We chose Henri Bendel NYC for it’s prestige image. Product- know what you want to sell and WHY people should buy your products. I personally formulated these products and both are clinically proven to show results in 30 seconds/15 minutes. Price- what I learned is you don’t set your price, your market determines your price. Eventhough we are at HB, there are still customers thinking a $75 mask is too expensive. They don’t care how much money you spend on doing clinicals, they determine how much is appropriate. On the other hand, my new polisher is priced at $38 dollars, it’s been enjoying great success. Promotion- You are your best promoter. No one knows better than you do. We went through 2 PR agents and they did not get us anywhere. My business partner and I tapped into our own network and just keep pushing along, we actually have a cult following from the beauty bloggers. People is everything. You really need to craft different pitches not only to consumers but to your suppliers, your manufacturers, and your retailers. Know each one’s hot button to press to get results. Among the marketing strategies, this one is the toughest but most rewarding if you can master it. Manufacturing and production- everything has a lead time. Do not promise your retailers anything unless you can secure production. Know what are the MOQ for the goods. We are fairly lucky since I know all the cosmetic contract fillers. There are people out there who can sell but have no goods to show for and kill the business. Let’s talk about marketing. We all know the marketing 4p’s.
