The Mystic-Cosmic History of “OM”
 It is said that before the world began, Brahma – the creator, the absolute reality – was one,
and He said, “I am one, but may I become many?” This thought created a vibration that
settled into a sound. This sound was OM. The creation of the world began with this
vibration – OM. Hence, it is considered the very first sound of the universe. "Before the
sound OM, there was nothing”.
 "OM is the primordial sound from which the entire universe was created.” "It is debated
that the patterns of sound waves around the sun and the sound wave patterns of OM are
similar." Originally found in the Vedas, a collection of Hindu texts written in India between
1500 and 1000 BCE, om is also referred to as "Shabd Brahman"—"God as sound" or "God as
vibration"—and the "Anahat," or "unstruck" sound.
 OM is a foundation of Hinduism. Everything comes from AUM and returns to AUM.
 It is said that this sound was first mentioned in the Upanishads (a collection of sacred
Hindu texts). The Mandukya Upanishad is a text dedicated to OM. It says that OM denotes
infinity and hence it’s imperishable. It says that OM was in the past, it is the present, and it
will be in the future. OM is said to be anything that exists beyond the bounds of time.
 OM is a spiritual symbol which denotes the essence of the ultimate reality, consciousness
and inner self. It is considered the highest sacred symbol of Hinduism."
 From the ancient era OM is a part of iconography found in manuscripts, temples,
monasteries, spiritual retreats and yoga centres.
 The true meaning of OM is deeply embedded in Hindu philosophy and to comprehend its truly profound
effects one must have a basic understanding of sound.
 Though many comprehend sound as merely something to be heard, its mechanism is a little more complex.
Sound is made up of vibrations. These vibrations are produced from a source, travel through the air, and then
are picked up by the ear before being interpreted by the brain, which assigns them some value. The number
of vibrations per second is known as frequency. Because all matter is composed of atomic material, which is in
constant motion, everything and everyone vibrates on some frequency.
 The great inventor and scientist Nikola Tesla once said, “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think
in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration.”
 The word OM is defined by Hindu scripture as being the primordial sound of creation. It is the original
vibration of the universe. From this first vibration, all other vibrations are able to manifest.
Explanations with Sanskrit terms
Significance of OM
Explanation in depth
The Symbolism of OM
The symbolic meaning of OM can be explained:
While its symbol is recognized by most, much fewer actually know what the combination of
curves, crescent, and dot, which make up Om’s visual representation, actually stand for.
Each aspect of the visual form of Om signifies a particular state of reality. The large lower
curve marks the normal waking state (jāgrat). In this condition, the mind identifies with the
physical body and perceives the world through the senses.
The upper curve indicates the unconscious state, or that of deep sleep (sushupti). This is a
state of total unawareness, in which you are in a deep dreamless sleep, and you are withdrawn
from both physical and mental activities.
The middle curve denotes the dream state (swapna). The dream state is in between the deep
sleep and waking state, where a person explores the subconscious. Your consciousness is
turned inwards, as your fears, hopes, and desires manifest themselves in an imaginary world.
The dot is a symbol of enlightenment (turiyā). In this state, a person becomes harmonized with
the Absolute, recognizing that all of creation is made up of spirit and is united through that
commonality. This state is beyond the mundane senses, and can only be achieved by
associating with spiritual energy.
The crescent represents maya, which separates the three curves from the dot. Maya is the
illusion that binds an individual soul to the material world. By chanting Om, one can transcend
the three curves of material consciousness, and attain the dot of enlightenment.
• Om (or AUM) is actually a three-part word. "The A
represents creation, U is manifestation, and M is
destruction”. "It's basically all-encompassing—the
whole universe joined into a single sound. It represents
the union of the mind, body, and the spirit.“
• The OM Mantra is comprised of three syllables, “A-U-M”,
which represent the three states of consciousness in
Hindu philosophy. The first syllable, “A”, represents the
waking state, the second syllable, “U”, represents the
dream state, and the third syllable, “M”, represents the
deep sleep state.
An Enticing Connotation
OM
The visual rendering of “OM" has a divine tier of significance of its own.
It reflects the image of Lord Ganesha. Look closely, and you might notice
that the om symbol resembles Lord Ganesha, the Hindu god of beginnings
with an elephant head.
"The physical form of Lord Ganesha is said to be that of OM". "The upper
curve of OM is identified with the head or the face of Ganesh. The lower
curve is his belly, and the twisted curve on the right side of om is the trunk.“
Okay, so maybe you don't see the resemblance at all. It's a subtle one. But
Ganesha's traditionally called upon when starting something new, and he's
the patron saint of intellectuals, bankers, and writers.
So it might be worth adding the OM symbol to a next vision board as OM
and Lord Ganesha to be the dual symbol.
The Mother And Sri Aurobindo on “OM”

 OM is the signature of the Lord.
The Mother – Words of the Mother: CWM, Vol. 15, p33
 I will tell you my old mantra. It keeps the outer being very tranquil: OM, Namo, Bhagavateh…. Three words.
To me they meant:
OM: I implore the Supreme Lord.
Namo: I obey Him.
Bhagavateh: Make me divine.
This, I found, has the power to calm everything.
The Mother – Agenda: Vol. 13, p377
 There is ONE sound which, to me, has an extraordinary power—extraordinary and UNIVERSAL (that’s the important
point): it doesn’t depend on the language you speak, it doesn’t depend on the education you were given, it doesn’t depend
on the atmosphere you breathe. And that sound, without knowing anything, I used to say it when I was a child (you know
how in French we say, “Oh!”; well, I used to say “OM,” without knowing anything!)….
The Mother – Agenda: Vol. 5, p201
 OM Choir – The New Music:
In 1961, the Mother gave Narad the aadesh (command) to bring down a New Music. These were Her words: “You must
bring down a New Music”
This is the aspiration of the OM Choir - A collective gathering as a group of souls, a sacred body, to open ourselves to be
instruments for the descent of the New Music, a music that has the power of effectuation through OM, which the Mother has
called, “The signature of the Lord.” OM Choirs are now in many parts of the world.
 The power is automatically there, because the sound contains the experience. I saw that
once in Paris, at a time when I knew nothing of India, absolutely nothing, only the usual
nonsense. I didn’t even know what a mantra was. I had gone to a lecture given by some
fellow who was supposed to have practiced “yoga” for a year in the Himalayas and
recounted his experience (none too interesting, either). All at once, in the course of his
lecture, he uttered the sound OM. And I saw the entire room suddenly fill with light, a
golden, vibrating light…. I was probably the only one to notice it. I said to myself, “Well!”
Then I didn’t give it any more thought, I forgot about the story. But as it happened, the
experience recurred in two or three different countries, with different people, and every
time there was the sound OM, I would suddenly see the place fill with that same light. So I
understood. That sound contains the vibration of thousands and thousands of years of
spiritual aspiration—there is in it the entire aspiration of men towards the Supreme. And
the power is automatically there, because the experience is there.
The Mother – Agenda: Vol. 4, p131
 I made an experiment: writing the letter OM. When you have written it four, five, six times,
it becomes excellent!
 … I started writing the letter OM carefully…. Well, when I came to the fourth, the fifth, it
became excellent—excellent, as though it were creating a vibration. That’s the power it has,
an external power….
The Mother – Agenda: Vol. 4, p187
 …we can, when pronouncing a word, force ourselves to reflect upon its exact meaning, its true import, in
order to make it fully effective.
In this regard, we can say that the active power of words comes from three different causes.
The first two lie in the word itself, which has become a battery of forces. The third lies in the fact
of living integrally the deep thought expressed by the word when we pronounce it.
Naturally, if these three causes of effectiveness are combined, the power of the word is considerably
enhanced.
1) There are certain words whose resonance in the physical world is the perfect vibratory materialisation
of the more subtle vibration produced by the thought in its own domain.
If we examine closely this similarity between the vibrations of thought and sound, we can discover the
limited number of root syllables which express the most general ideas, and which are to be found in most
spoken languages with an almost identical meaning.
2) There are other words which have been repeated in certain circumstances for hundreds of years and
which are instinct with the mental forces of all those who have pronounced them. They are true batteries of
energy.
3) Finally, there are words which assume an immediate value when they are pronounced, as a result of the
living thought of the one who pronounces them.
To illustrate what I have just said with an example, here is a very powerful word, for it can
combine the qualities of all three categories: it is the Sanskrit word “AUM”.
It is used in India to express the divine Immanence. There, it is associated with every
meditation, every contemplation, every yogic practice.
More than any other sound, this sound “AUM” gives rise to a feeling of peace, of serenity, of
eternity. Moreover, this word is instinct with the mental forces which for centuries all those who have used it
have accumulated around the idea that it expresses; and, for Hindus especially, it has the true power of
bringing one into contact with the divine Essence it evokes.
The Mother – Words of Long Ago: CWM, Vol. 2, pp66-67
 OM is the syllable, OM is the Universe; the past, the present and the future,—all that was, all that is, all that will be is OM…. Likewise all
that may exist beyond the bounds of Time, that too is OM.
Sri Aurobindo – Kena and Other Upanishads: CWSA, Vol. 18, pp 340-43
 OM is the mantra, the expressive sound-symbol of the Brahman Consciousness in its four domains from the Turiya to the external or
material plane. The function of a mantra is to create vibrations in the inner consciousness that will prepare it for the realisation of what the
mantra symbolises and is supposed indeed to carry within itself. The mantra OM should therefore lead towards the opening of the
consciousness to the sight and feeling of the One Consciousness in all material things, in the inner being and in the supraphysical worlds, in
the causal plane above now superconscient to us and, finally, the supreme liberated transcendence above all cosmic existence.
The last is usually the main preoccupation with those who use the mantra.
In this Yoga there is no fixed mantra, no stress is laid on mantras, although sadhaks can use one if they find it helpful or so long as
they find it helpful. The stress is rather on an aspiration in the consciousness and a concentration of the mind, heart, will, all the being. If a mantra
is found helpful for that, one uses it. OM if rightly used (not mechanically) might very well help the opening upwards and outwards (cosmic
consciousness) as well as the descent.
Sri Aurobindo – Letters on Yoga: CWSA, Vol.29, pp 323-24
 OM. The Word of Manifestation.
A - The external manifestation (consciousness realised in the actual and concrete—seen by the human consciousness as the waking state.)
U - The internal manifestation (intermediate—the inner, not the inmost being—consciousness realised in the inner potentialities and
intermediate states between the inmost supramental and the external—seen by the human consciousness as the subliminal and associated with
the dream state.)
M - The inmost seed or condensed consciousness (the inmost supramental, glimpsed by the human consciousness as something superconscient,
omniscient and omnipotent, and associated with the state of dreamless Sleep or full Trance.)
AUM - Turiya, the Fourth; the pure Spirit beyond these three, Atman consciousness entering into Tat Sat and able to identify with it. Believed to
be obtainable in its absoluteness only in absolute Trance—nirvikalpa samadhi.
Sri Aurobindo – Record of Yoga – II: CWSA, Vol. 11, pp1337-38
OM
An Unique Representation of the Hindu Dynasties
 In Hindu mythology, Suryavanshi Rajputs and Chandravanshi Rajputs are
two different clans.
 The sources of Solar and Lunar dynasties are featured in Kurma, Brahma,
Agni Puranas, Valmiki Ramayana, Mahabharata and other Puranas too.
1. The Solar Dynasty (or Surya Vansh)
 Lord Brahma's son was Marichi, Marichi's son Kashyapa and Kakshyapa's
son Vivasvana (Sun god). Vivasvana's son was Vaivasvata (7th or current
Manu).
 Vaivasvata Manu had no children and he arranged for a sacrifice so that he
might have a son. Nine sons were born as a result of this sacrifice. Their names
were Ikshvaku, Nabhaga, Dhrishta, Sharyati, Narishyanta, Pramashu, Rishta,
Karusha and Prishadhra. Manu also had a daughter named Ila (इला).
 Note: Subsequently, thanks to a boon. Ila became a man named Sudyumna.
Sudyumna's sons were Utkala, Gaya and Vinatashva. Utkala ruled in Orissa,
Gaya in the region that is also called Gaya, and Vinatashva in the west. Or few
sources say that earlier Sudyumna (i.e a man) was there but due to curse he
became a woman (i.e Ila). When he/she was a woman she married Budha and
gave birth to a son which is described in the later part of this answer.
 Note: Valmiki Ramayana mention many kings in between Raghu and Aja
including Nahusha and Yayati (who are mentioned in Lunar Dynasty too). But
there should not be any doubt as names can be duplicate. However, other
sources doesn't depict any king between Raghu and Aja.
2. The Lunar Dynasty (or Chandra or Soma Vansh)
 Lord Brahma also had a son named Atri and Atri had a son named Soma or Chandra
(Moon god).
 Soma performed a rajasuya yajna (royal sacrifice). Having performed the sacrifice, Soma
became the ruler of all the worlds. This made him very arrogant and he abducted the sage
Brihaspati's wife Tara. This led to a terrible war between the devas and the asuras (the
fifth war between the devas and the asuras took place over the abduction of Tara and this
came to be known as the Tarakamaya war). Tara was eventually restored to Brihaspati,
but Soma and Tara had a son named Budha.
 Budha married Ila (daughter of Vaivasvata Manu) and they had a son named Pururava. In
that lineage then born kings like Nahusha and Yayati. Yayati and Devayani had two
sons, Yadu and Tursavu. Yayati and Sharmishtha had three sons, Druhya, Anu and Puru.
 Yadu's descendants came to be known as the Yadavas.
 Puru's descendants came to be known as the Pauravas.
 Note: Our country's name Bharat Varsh (the region of Bharat) is said to be after king
Bharat's name. But other than above mentioned Bharat, many kings were born earlier
whose names were Bharat. One of them was king Bharat who was born in 1st Manavantra
in the lineage of Priyvrata (the son of Svayambhu Manu). His name is not given here as
these lineage are given from Vaivasvata Manavantra (7th Manavantra).
The One that ties The Many…
OM
 For a simple-looking symbol, OM packs in a whole lot of
meaning. With roots in Hinduism, Buddhism, and
Jainism, the OM can now be seen and heard in spiritual
spaces around the world.
 OM also has ties to Buddhism, where it refers to
compassion and connection. And in Jainism, it's often
used in reference to Pañca-Parameṣṭhi, or the five
supreme beings of the ancient Indian religion.
 It is the most recognized sacred symbols which is being
used the worldwide.
OM – The Universal Access
 Like an object depicted in numerous ways by numerous painters, OM’s essence is uniquely manifested and accessed by
different types of people all over the world.
 As yogis commonly conclude their meditations with the chanting of Om, the Judeo-Christian utterance of “Amen,” and the
Islamic version “Amin,” are used by followers to evoke the energy of the Divine at the end of a prayer.
 Even within Hinduism, the meaning and connotations of OM is perceived in a variety of ways. Though heard and often
written as “OM,” due to the way it sounds when it is repeatedly chanted, the sacred syllable is originally and more
accurately spelled as “AUM.”
 Broken down, the three letters of A – U – M represent a number of sacred trinities:
• The different conditions of consciousness — the waking state, the dreaming state, and the deep sleep state. As a
mirror of the mind's journey - "The curves of the om symbolize the different states of mind". The curve at the bottom
represents “Jagratha," or the waking state. The one in the middle is associated with “Swapna,” the dream state. And
“Sushupti,” or deep sleep, is the top curve. Shetty adds that the semi-circle on top represents “Maya,” which is
basically an illusion or obstacle that keeps us from reaching "Turiya," or transcendence. (That's the dot on the top.)
• The deities in charge of the creation, preservation, and destruction of the universe — Brahma, Vishnu, and
Shiva.
• The three original Vedic scriptures — Rig, Yajur, and Sāma.
• The three worlds — earth, atmosphere, and ether.
• The three aspects of time — past, present, and future.
• The three "gunas", or qualities, found in nature and the doshas in Ayurveda — Sattva (harmony), Rajas
(movement), and Tamas (inertia). Every human, plant, animal, and object contains all three qualities in varying
degrees, although they're balanced differently in everyone and everything.
• In the Bhakti Tradition (yoga of devotion) — Krishna (seen by his devotees as the God of Creation), Rādhārāni
(Krishna’s eternal consort, or God’s female counterpart), and the ordinary living beings.
 OM encompasses all of creation, and its merciful energy can be attained by any who seek it, regardless of who they are,
where they come from, or whichever faith they follow.

OM
OM – Respectful Usage in Practice
 If you are not traditionally Hindu, Buddhist, or Jain but appreciate the meaning behind Om,
you can still integrate the sound and symbol into your spiritual practice. But when you're
using something so sacred, it's important to do so with respect. Here are two ways to use
Om that acknowledge its history and significance:
1) As a symbol
If learning about the symbol for Om and what it represents makes you want to
incorporate it into your life, feel free to add it to your at-home meditation or prayer space. Let
it serve as a reminder of your connection to the universe, as well as the unification of the mind,
body, and spirit.
2) As a chant
As we now know, chanting Om can have powerful effects on the body and mind. If
you want to try it, Kumar recommends first recognizing its history and context, then saying it
either silently or aloud while meditating or doing yoga.
"It's meant to be said slowly," she notes. "It's meant to increase your mental and
emotional vibration. You can repeat Om while meditating (to help with) focus, or you can chant
it three times before yoga.“

  • 2. The Mystic-Cosmic History of “OM”  It is said that before the world began, Brahma – the creator, the absolute reality – was one, and He said, “I am one, but may I become many?” This thought created a vibration that settled into a sound. This sound was OM. The creation of the world began with this vibration – OM. Hence, it is considered the very first sound of the universe. "Before the sound OM, there was nothing”.  "OM is the primordial sound from which the entire universe was created.” "It is debated that the patterns of sound waves around the sun and the sound wave patterns of OM are similar." Originally found in the Vedas, a collection of Hindu texts written in India between 1500 and 1000 BCE, om is also referred to as "Shabd Brahman"—"God as sound" or "God as vibration"—and the "Anahat," or "unstruck" sound.  OM is a foundation of Hinduism. Everything comes from AUM and returns to AUM.  It is said that this sound was first mentioned in the Upanishads (a collection of sacred Hindu texts). The Mandukya Upanishad is a text dedicated to OM. It says that OM denotes infinity and hence it’s imperishable. It says that OM was in the past, it is the present, and it will be in the future. OM is said to be anything that exists beyond the bounds of time.  OM is a spiritual symbol which denotes the essence of the ultimate reality, consciousness and inner self. It is considered the highest sacred symbol of Hinduism."  From the ancient era OM is a part of iconography found in manuscripts, temples, monasteries, spiritual retreats and yoga centres.
  • 3.  The true meaning of OM is deeply embedded in Hindu philosophy and to comprehend its truly profound effects one must have a basic understanding of sound.  Though many comprehend sound as merely something to be heard, its mechanism is a little more complex. Sound is made up of vibrations. These vibrations are produced from a source, travel through the air, and then are picked up by the ear before being interpreted by the brain, which assigns them some value. The number of vibrations per second is known as frequency. Because all matter is composed of atomic material, which is in constant motion, everything and everyone vibrates on some frequency.  The great inventor and scientist Nikola Tesla once said, “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration.”  The word OM is defined by Hindu scripture as being the primordial sound of creation. It is the original vibration of the universe. From this first vibration, all other vibrations are able to manifest.

  • 5. Explanations with Sanskrit terms Significance of OM
  • 6.
  • 7. Explanation in depth The Symbolism of OM
  • 8. The symbolic meaning of OM can be explained: While its symbol is recognized by most, much fewer actually know what the combination of curves, crescent, and dot, which make up Om’s visual representation, actually stand for. Each aspect of the visual form of Om signifies a particular state of reality. The large lower curve marks the normal waking state (jāgrat). In this condition, the mind identifies with the physical body and perceives the world through the senses. The upper curve indicates the unconscious state, or that of deep sleep (sushupti). This is a state of total unawareness, in which you are in a deep dreamless sleep, and you are withdrawn from both physical and mental activities. The middle curve denotes the dream state (swapna). The dream state is in between the deep sleep and waking state, where a person explores the subconscious. Your consciousness is turned inwards, as your fears, hopes, and desires manifest themselves in an imaginary world. The dot is a symbol of enlightenment (turiyā). In this state, a person becomes harmonized with the Absolute, recognizing that all of creation is made up of spirit and is united through that commonality. This state is beyond the mundane senses, and can only be achieved by associating with spiritual energy. The crescent represents maya, which separates the three curves from the dot. Maya is the illusion that binds an individual soul to the material world. By chanting Om, one can transcend the three curves of material consciousness, and attain the dot of enlightenment.

  • 10. • Om (or AUM) is actually a three-part word. "The A represents creation, U is manifestation, and M is destruction”. "It's basically all-encompassing—the whole universe joined into a single sound. It represents the union of the mind, body, and the spirit.“ • The OM Mantra is comprised of three syllables, “A-U-M”, which represent the three states of consciousness in Hindu philosophy. The first syllable, “A”, represents the waking state, the second syllable, “U”, represents the dream state, and the third syllable, “M”, represents the deep sleep state.

  • 14. The visual rendering of “OM" has a divine tier of significance of its own. It reflects the image of Lord Ganesha. Look closely, and you might notice that the om symbol resembles Lord Ganesha, the Hindu god of beginnings with an elephant head. "The physical form of Lord Ganesha is said to be that of OM". "The upper curve of OM is identified with the head or the face of Ganesh. The lower curve is his belly, and the twisted curve on the right side of om is the trunk.“ Okay, so maybe you don't see the resemblance at all. It's a subtle one. But Ganesha's traditionally called upon when starting something new, and he's the patron saint of intellectuals, bankers, and writers. So it might be worth adding the OM symbol to a next vision board as OM and Lord Ganesha to be the dual symbol.

  • 16. The Mother And Sri Aurobindo on “OM” OM
  • 17. ॐ  OM is the signature of the Lord. The Mother – Words of the Mother: CWM, Vol. 15, p33  I will tell you my old mantra. It keeps the outer being very tranquil: OM, Namo, Bhagavateh…. Three words. To me they meant: OM: I implore the Supreme Lord. Namo: I obey Him. Bhagavateh: Make me divine. This, I found, has the power to calm everything. The Mother – Agenda: Vol. 13, p377  There is ONE sound which, to me, has an extraordinary power—extraordinary and UNIVERSAL (that’s the important point): it doesn’t depend on the language you speak, it doesn’t depend on the education you were given, it doesn’t depend on the atmosphere you breathe. And that sound, without knowing anything, I used to say it when I was a child (you know how in French we say, “Oh!”; well, I used to say “OM,” without knowing anything!)…. The Mother – Agenda: Vol. 5, p201  OM Choir – The New Music: In 1961, the Mother gave Narad the aadesh (command) to bring down a New Music. These were Her words: “You must bring down a New Music” This is the aspiration of the OM Choir - A collective gathering as a group of souls, a sacred body, to open ourselves to be instruments for the descent of the New Music, a music that has the power of effectuation through OM, which the Mother has called, “The signature of the Lord.” OM Choirs are now in many parts of the world.
  • 18.  The power is automatically there, because the sound contains the experience. I saw that once in Paris, at a time when I knew nothing of India, absolutely nothing, only the usual nonsense. I didn’t even know what a mantra was. I had gone to a lecture given by some fellow who was supposed to have practiced “yoga” for a year in the Himalayas and recounted his experience (none too interesting, either). All at once, in the course of his lecture, he uttered the sound OM. And I saw the entire room suddenly fill with light, a golden, vibrating light…. I was probably the only one to notice it. I said to myself, “Well!” Then I didn’t give it any more thought, I forgot about the story. But as it happened, the experience recurred in two or three different countries, with different people, and every time there was the sound OM, I would suddenly see the place fill with that same light. So I understood. That sound contains the vibration of thousands and thousands of years of spiritual aspiration—there is in it the entire aspiration of men towards the Supreme. And the power is automatically there, because the experience is there. The Mother – Agenda: Vol. 4, p131  I made an experiment: writing the letter OM. When you have written it four, five, six times, it becomes excellent!  … I started writing the letter OM carefully…. Well, when I came to the fourth, the fifth, it became excellent—excellent, as though it were creating a vibration. That’s the power it has, an external power…. The Mother – Agenda: Vol. 4, p187
  • 19.  …we can, when pronouncing a word, force ourselves to reflect upon its exact meaning, its true import, in order to make it fully effective. In this regard, we can say that the active power of words comes from three different causes. The first two lie in the word itself, which has become a battery of forces. The third lies in the fact of living integrally the deep thought expressed by the word when we pronounce it. Naturally, if these three causes of effectiveness are combined, the power of the word is considerably enhanced. 1) There are certain words whose resonance in the physical world is the perfect vibratory materialisation of the more subtle vibration produced by the thought in its own domain. If we examine closely this similarity between the vibrations of thought and sound, we can discover the limited number of root syllables which express the most general ideas, and which are to be found in most spoken languages with an almost identical meaning. 2) There are other words which have been repeated in certain circumstances for hundreds of years and which are instinct with the mental forces of all those who have pronounced them. They are true batteries of energy. 3) Finally, there are words which assume an immediate value when they are pronounced, as a result of the living thought of the one who pronounces them. To illustrate what I have just said with an example, here is a very powerful word, for it can combine the qualities of all three categories: it is the Sanskrit word “AUM”. It is used in India to express the divine Immanence. There, it is associated with every meditation, every contemplation, every yogic practice. More than any other sound, this sound “AUM” gives rise to a feeling of peace, of serenity, of eternity. Moreover, this word is instinct with the mental forces which for centuries all those who have used it have accumulated around the idea that it expresses; and, for Hindus especially, it has the true power of bringing one into contact with the divine Essence it evokes. The Mother – Words of Long Ago: CWM, Vol. 2, pp66-67
  • 20.  OM is the syllable, OM is the Universe; the past, the present and the future,—all that was, all that is, all that will be is OM…. Likewise all that may exist beyond the bounds of Time, that too is OM. Sri Aurobindo – Kena and Other Upanishads: CWSA, Vol. 18, pp 340-43  OM is the mantra, the expressive sound-symbol of the Brahman Consciousness in its four domains from the Turiya to the external or material plane. The function of a mantra is to create vibrations in the inner consciousness that will prepare it for the realisation of what the mantra symbolises and is supposed indeed to carry within itself. The mantra OM should therefore lead towards the opening of the consciousness to the sight and feeling of the One Consciousness in all material things, in the inner being and in the supraphysical worlds, in the causal plane above now superconscient to us and, finally, the supreme liberated transcendence above all cosmic existence. The last is usually the main preoccupation with those who use the mantra. In this Yoga there is no fixed mantra, no stress is laid on mantras, although sadhaks can use one if they find it helpful or so long as they find it helpful. The stress is rather on an aspiration in the consciousness and a concentration of the mind, heart, will, all the being. If a mantra is found helpful for that, one uses it. OM if rightly used (not mechanically) might very well help the opening upwards and outwards (cosmic consciousness) as well as the descent. Sri Aurobindo – Letters on Yoga: CWSA, Vol.29, pp 323-24  OM. The Word of Manifestation. A - The external manifestation (consciousness realised in the actual and concrete—seen by the human consciousness as the waking state.) U - The internal manifestation (intermediate—the inner, not the inmost being—consciousness realised in the inner potentialities and intermediate states between the inmost supramental and the external—seen by the human consciousness as the subliminal and associated with the dream state.) M - The inmost seed or condensed consciousness (the inmost supramental, glimpsed by the human consciousness as something superconscient, omniscient and omnipotent, and associated with the state of dreamless Sleep or full Trance.) AUM - Turiya, the Fourth; the pure Spirit beyond these three, Atman consciousness entering into Tat Sat and able to identify with it. Believed to be obtainable in its absoluteness only in absolute Trance—nirvikalpa samadhi. Sri Aurobindo – Record of Yoga – II: CWSA, Vol. 11, pp1337-38
  • 21. OM An Unique Representation of the Hindu Dynasties  In Hindu mythology, Suryavanshi Rajputs and Chandravanshi Rajputs are two different clans.  The sources of Solar and Lunar dynasties are featured in Kurma, Brahma, Agni Puranas, Valmiki Ramayana, Mahabharata and other Puranas too.
  • 22. 1. The Solar Dynasty (or Surya Vansh)  Lord Brahma's son was Marichi, Marichi's son Kashyapa and Kakshyapa's son Vivasvana (Sun god). Vivasvana's son was Vaivasvata (7th or current Manu).  Vaivasvata Manu had no children and he arranged for a sacrifice so that he might have a son. Nine sons were born as a result of this sacrifice. Their names were Ikshvaku, Nabhaga, Dhrishta, Sharyati, Narishyanta, Pramashu, Rishta, Karusha and Prishadhra. Manu also had a daughter named Ila (इला).  Note: Subsequently, thanks to a boon. Ila became a man named Sudyumna. Sudyumna's sons were Utkala, Gaya and Vinatashva. Utkala ruled in Orissa, Gaya in the region that is also called Gaya, and Vinatashva in the west. Or few sources say that earlier Sudyumna (i.e a man) was there but due to curse he became a woman (i.e Ila). When he/she was a woman she married Budha and gave birth to a son which is described in the later part of this answer.  Note: Valmiki Ramayana mention many kings in between Raghu and Aja including Nahusha and Yayati (who are mentioned in Lunar Dynasty too). But there should not be any doubt as names can be duplicate. However, other sources doesn't depict any king between Raghu and Aja.
  • 23. 2. The Lunar Dynasty (or Chandra or Soma Vansh)  Lord Brahma also had a son named Atri and Atri had a son named Soma or Chandra (Moon god).  Soma performed a rajasuya yajna (royal sacrifice). Having performed the sacrifice, Soma became the ruler of all the worlds. This made him very arrogant and he abducted the sage Brihaspati's wife Tara. This led to a terrible war between the devas and the asuras (the fifth war between the devas and the asuras took place over the abduction of Tara and this came to be known as the Tarakamaya war). Tara was eventually restored to Brihaspati, but Soma and Tara had a son named Budha.  Budha married Ila (daughter of Vaivasvata Manu) and they had a son named Pururava. In that lineage then born kings like Nahusha and Yayati. Yayati and Devayani had two sons, Yadu and Tursavu. Yayati and Sharmishtha had three sons, Druhya, Anu and Puru.  Yadu's descendants came to be known as the Yadavas.  Puru's descendants came to be known as the Pauravas.  Note: Our country's name Bharat Varsh (the region of Bharat) is said to be after king Bharat's name. But other than above mentioned Bharat, many kings were born earlier whose names were Bharat. One of them was king Bharat who was born in 1st Manavantra in the lineage of Priyvrata (the son of Svayambhu Manu). His name is not given here as these lineage are given from Vaivasvata Manavantra (7th Manavantra).

  • 25. The One that ties The Many… OM
  • 26.  For a simple-looking symbol, OM packs in a whole lot of meaning. With roots in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, the OM can now be seen and heard in spiritual spaces around the world.  OM also has ties to Buddhism, where it refers to compassion and connection. And in Jainism, it's often used in reference to Pañca-Parameṣṭhi, or the five supreme beings of the ancient Indian religion.  It is the most recognized sacred symbols which is being used the worldwide.
  • 27. OM – The Universal Access  Like an object depicted in numerous ways by numerous painters, OM’s essence is uniquely manifested and accessed by different types of people all over the world.  As yogis commonly conclude their meditations with the chanting of Om, the Judeo-Christian utterance of “Amen,” and the Islamic version “Amin,” are used by followers to evoke the energy of the Divine at the end of a prayer.  Even within Hinduism, the meaning and connotations of OM is perceived in a variety of ways. Though heard and often written as “OM,” due to the way it sounds when it is repeatedly chanted, the sacred syllable is originally and more accurately spelled as “AUM.”  Broken down, the three letters of A – U – M represent a number of sacred trinities: • The different conditions of consciousness — the waking state, the dreaming state, and the deep sleep state. As a mirror of the mind's journey - "The curves of the om symbolize the different states of mind". The curve at the bottom represents “Jagratha," or the waking state. The one in the middle is associated with “Swapna,” the dream state. And “Sushupti,” or deep sleep, is the top curve. Shetty adds that the semi-circle on top represents “Maya,” which is basically an illusion or obstacle that keeps us from reaching "Turiya," or transcendence. (That's the dot on the top.) • The deities in charge of the creation, preservation, and destruction of the universe — Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. • The three original Vedic scriptures — Rig, Yajur, and Sāma. • The three worlds — earth, atmosphere, and ether. • The three aspects of time — past, present, and future. • The three "gunas", or qualities, found in nature and the doshas in Ayurveda — Sattva (harmony), Rajas (movement), and Tamas (inertia). Every human, plant, animal, and object contains all three qualities in varying degrees, although they're balanced differently in everyone and everything. • In the Bhakti Tradition (yoga of devotion) — Krishna (seen by his devotees as the God of Creation), Rādhārāni (Krishna’s eternal consort, or God’s female counterpart), and the ordinary living beings.  OM encompasses all of creation, and its merciful energy can be attained by any who seek it, regardless of who they are, where they come from, or whichever faith they follow.
  • 29.
  • 30. OM – Respectful Usage in Practice  If you are not traditionally Hindu, Buddhist, or Jain but appreciate the meaning behind Om, you can still integrate the sound and symbol into your spiritual practice. But when you're using something so sacred, it's important to do so with respect. Here are two ways to use Om that acknowledge its history and significance: 1) As a symbol If learning about the symbol for Om and what it represents makes you want to incorporate it into your life, feel free to add it to your at-home meditation or prayer space. Let it serve as a reminder of your connection to the universe, as well as the unification of the mind, body, and spirit. 2) As a chant As we now know, chanting Om can have powerful effects on the body and mind. If you want to try it, Kumar recommends first recognizing its history and context, then saying it either silently or aloud while meditating or doing yoga. "It's meant to be said slowly," she notes. "It's meant to increase your mental and emotional vibration. You can repeat Om while meditating (to help with) focus, or you can chant it three times before yoga.“
