 Fossils are remains of once living
organisms
 According to Arnold
“ the relic of some former living things plants
or animals embedded in or dug out of the
superficial deposits in past geological
periods”.
 Fossils
 Chemical
 Trace
 Micro fossils
 Mega fossils
 Sub fossils
 Pseudo fossils
 Derived fossils
 Coal fossils
 Amber
 Index fossils
 Chemical which found in rocks are called
chemical fossils
 Impression made on the substrate by an
organisms activities (like walking) and that
marks or imprints preserved called trace
fossils
 Minute or very small fossils remains which
cannot be seen by naked eyes.
 That requires magnification glass or
microscope
 Large part or whole organism when
preserved in the sedimentary deposits and
easily visible to naked eye
 Compression
 Impression
 Petrification
 Cast and Mold
 Any plant part compressed by particle placed
on the sediments and the organism became
flattened thin
 external structure only seen so we could not
study about their internal struture
 Plant part compress by sediments and give
an imprint of it
 Organic material becomes a fossil due to
replacement of the original material and
filling of the original pore spaces with
minerals
 Cast : Mineral gradually enter in to the cavity
and become solidify
 Molds : External preserved surface where
sediments are enter and form cast
 Organism or plant part are dig up before they
complete their fossilization
 Sometimes inorganic material on the rock
appears to be a fossil
 Sometime due to tectonic movements or
other geological upheaval fossils redeposit in
to young sediments
 Infiltration of plant debris minerals salts in
swamps and conversation of debris in to coal
 Tree resin
