• Aimed at tapping the talent of internationally renowned teachers,
GIAN focuses on augmenting the nation’s academic resources for
global excellence.

problems.

7. Annual Refresher Programme in Teaching (ARPIT)
• Launched on 13th November 2018 under Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya
National Mission on Teachers & Teaching.
• ARPIT) is a major and unique initiative of online professional development
of 15 lakh higher education faculty using the MOOCs platform SWAYAM.
• For implementing ARPIT, 75 discipline-specific institutions have been
identified and notified as National Resource Centres (NRCs) in the first
phase.
• These instituted are tasked to prepare online training material with focus
on latest developments in the discipline, pedagogical improvements and
methodologies for transacting revised curriculum.
• In 2018, the inaugural year itself, the NRCs are expected to cater to around
1.3 million faculty of the total 1.5 million faculty in higher education.

9. Leadership for Academicians Programme (LEAP)
• Launched on 13th November 2018 under Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya
National Mission on Teachers & Teaching.
• It is a three weeks (2 weeks domestic and one week foreign training)
flagship leadership development training programme for second level
academic functionaries in public funded higher education institutions.
• LEAP will make Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) perform their roles of
developing better students who will be future torch bearers.
• The main objective is to prepare second tier academic heads who are
potentially likely to assume leadership roles in the future.
• It would provide senior faculty the required leadership and managerial
skills including skills of problem-solving, handling stress, team building
work, conflict management, communication, understanding the complexity
and challenges of governance in HEIs and general administration.

11. NPTEL Online Certification
• What is NPTEL? NPTEL is an acronym for National Programme on Technology
Enhanced Learning which is an initiative by seven Indian Institutes of Technology
(IIT Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) and
Indian Institute of Science (IISc) for creating course contents in engineering and
science. NPTEL provides E-learning through online Web and Video courses in
Engineering, Science and Humanities streams.
• What is NOC? NOC stands for NPTEL Online Certification. NPTEL is now offering
online certification courses through its portal https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in.
There are 4week, 8week as well as 12week courses offered twice a year.
• What do I have to do to get a certificate? If you want to get a certificate from the
IITs/IISc after doing the course, you should: - First enroll to the course, which is
free - Watch the videos; Submit the weekly Assignments - Register for the in-
person proctored certification exam with a nominal fee of INR 1100 per course -
Come write the exam at the designated Exam Centre - Pass the exam with a
consolidated score of 40% or above.

14. SWAYAM
(Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds)
• What is SWAYAM? SWAYAM is India Chapter of Massive Open Online Courses. SWAYAM is an
indigenous developed IT platform, initiated by Government of India, which is instrumental for
self-actualisation providing opportunities for a life-long learning.
• What are the Objectives of SWAYAM schemes? Major objectives of the proposal are as
follows: i) Creation of content on courses from School Secondary level till Post Graduation,
covering all disciplines, to be made available on the SWAYAM platform. ii ) Repurposing of e-
content courses already developed under NMEICT to fit into SWAYAM Pedagogy / Andragogy.
iii) Develop India MOOCs platform named as SWAYAM for hosting and running thousands of
courses simultaneously. Iv) Provide robust Internet Cloud (with CDN) and sufficient
bandwidth for concurrent viewings of 1 Million users. V) Conduct of examination and award
of certificates to participants having successfully completed the course. Vi) Provide
recommendations to Institutions regarding implementation of Choice Based Credit System
(CBCS) on SWAYAM Courses.
• Targets to be achieved through SWAYAM? The specific target proposed is addressed to the
needs of students studying in Universities, Colleges and CFIs and the learners in the Country.
• Can any person in the world register a Course on SWAYAM? Yes, any person in the world can
register a Course on SWAYAM.

18. FAQs on SWAYAM MOOCs
• What Courses are planned & who can deliver the MOOCs on SWAYAM? Learner
can choose from hundreds of courses, virtually every course that is taught at the
university/college/school level and these shall be offered by best of the teachers
in India and elsewhere. More than 1,000 specially chosen teachers and lecturers
from across the Country have participated in preparing these courses.
• Who shall produce & deliver the MOOCs on SWAYAM? MHRD has appointed
nine National Coordinators viz UGC, NPTEL, CEC, IGNOU, NCERT, NIOS, IIMB,
NITTTR & AICTE which have been assigned a specific sector for preparation of
online courses for SWAYAM.
• What is the Format / Pedagogy of MOOCs production? The courses hosted on
SWAYAM will be in 4 quadrants – (1) video lecture with multimedia, (2) specially
prepared reading material that can be downloaded/printed (3) self-assessment
tests through tests and quizzes and (4) an online discussion forum for clearing the
doubts. Steps have been taken to enrich the learning experience by using audio-
video & multi-media and state of the art pedagogy/technology.
19. • Are the Courses on SWAYAM going to be on charge basis? The courses delivered
through SWAYAM are available free of cost to the learners, however students
wanting certifications shall be registered and offered a certificate on successful
completion of the course, with a little fee. At the end of each course, there will be an
assessment of the student through proctored examination and the marks/grades
secured in this exam could be transferred to the academic record of the students.
• Will a Learner earn Credits & certificate after going through the MOOCs on
SWAYAM? The courses delivered through SWAYAM are accessible by any learner free
of cost. However student having registered a course, having submitting the
Assignments as per requirements of the course, shall at the end of each course, be
assessed through a proctored examination. A student having successfully completed
the course shall get a Certificate that shall be issued by Host Institute. The
marks/grades secured in this proctored examination could be transferred to the
academic record of the students from Host Institute.
• Has the Government issued any policy regarding transfer of credits earned by a
student through MOOCs on SWAYAM? UGC has already issued the UGC (Credit
Framework for online learning courses through SWAYAM) Regulation 2016 advising
the Universities to identify courses where credits can be transferred on to the
academic record of the students for courses done on SWAYAM.
20. • Are Skill based courses also to be covered under SWAYAM? The SWAYAM shall
also cover Skill based courses, which cover both post-higher secondary school
skills that are presently the domain of polytechnics as well as industrial skills
certified by the sector skill councils of various Ministries.
• For which standard & discipline, the Courses shall be delivered through
SWAYAM? The SWAYAM shall facilitate hosting of all the courses, taught in
classrooms from 9th class till post-graduation and hundreds of courses covering
virtually every course that is taught at the university/college/school level and
these shall be offered by best of the teachers in India. The curriculum based
course contents shall also cover diverse disciplines such as arts, science,
commerce, performing arts, social sciences and humanities subjects, engineering,
technology, law, medicine, agriculture etc. in higher education domain (all
courses would be certification-ready in their detailed offering).
21. • Make the most of SWAYAM – an integrated platform of online
interactive courses. It provides an aspiring learner with a total
package of lecture, material, tutorial, interactive sessions,
examinations & certification.
• Undergraduate courses on different streams, viz. Science, Commerce,
Humanities are offered under the SWAYAM scheme, on primary,
secondary and higher secondary levels, both for part time and regular
learners.

22. Swayam Prabha Television Programme
• The Swayam Prabha is a group of 32 DTH channels devoted to
telecasting of high-quality educational programmes on 24X7 basis
using the GSAT-15 satellite.
• Launched on 9th July 2017.
• Swayam Prabha: CEC, IGNOU, NCERT and NIOS, the free to air 32 DTH
channels will telecast educational programmes 24X7 everyday.
• The programmes will be repeated 5 times a day. So, benefit from
Swayam Prabha & make watching TV an enriching experience.
• 117,930 Number of Titles | 32 DTH channels
• Archived videos are available on YouTube.

• The E-Pathshala initiative by MHRD encourages students to nurture
educational skills by providing access to digital textbooks & e-
Resources and making the dream of Digital India possible.

28. Conclusion
• Open Educational Resources (OER) produced in India have been used extensively by
the educators and lifelong learners across the world.
• India’s flagship Technical & Economic Cooperation Programme (ITEC) Programme,
although offered in face-to-face mode, have helped capacity building and skills
development of participants from many developing countries/ Global South.
• Technology-enabled Learning (TEL) in India has been maturing with the
improvement of infrastructure and creating the societal demands.
• India is one of the leading countries in the Global South innovating delivery of open
education through online media.
• Many of these e-Resources and MOOCs are available for the educators and lifelong
learners across the world.
• Many of them can get online certification, if the learners successfully complete the
online courses. Some courses are available as the audit courses.
• We need to collaborate with other partners in the Global South for delivery of
SWAYAM and NPTEL online courses, which are available freely.
