INTRODUCTION
Recycling is the act of processing the used material
for use in creating new product.
Aggregates obtained from recycling of
construction and demolition waste.
Recycled aggregate are comprised of crushed,
graded inorganic particles processed from the
materials that have been used in the
constructions.
These materials are generally from buildings,
roads, broken concrete, brickwork and masonry,
bridges.
Natural Aggregates

Recycled Aggregates
Need Recycled Aggregates..? But
WHY ?
The usage of natural aggregate is getting more
and more intense with the advanced development
in infrastructure area .

In order to reduce the usage of natural aggregate,
recycled aggregate can be used as the
replacement materials.
Properties Of Recycled Aggregates
▪ Particle Size Distribution

Better particle size distribution than Natural Aggregates.

▪ Specific Gravity

Lower as compared to Natural Aggregates.

▪ Water Absorption

Relatively higher (up to 50%) than that of the Natural
Aggregates.

▪ Compressive Strength

The amount of reduction in strength (up to 25%) depends on
parameters such as grade of demolished concrete,
replacement ratio, w/c ratio, processing of recycled
aggregate etc.
Applications Of Recycled
Aggregates
The applications of recycled aggregate in construction areas
are wide. The applications are different in different countries.
• Embankment Fill Materials

The embankment site is on the wet sub grade areas. Recycled
aggregate can stabilize the base and provide an improved
working surface.

• Backfill Materials
Recycled aggregate can be used as backfill materials in the
pipe zone along trenches after having testing in laboratory.
• Building Blocks
The masonry sound insulation blocks that produced had met
all the requirements during the laboratory testing.
Advantages
• Environmental Gain

Construction and demolition waste makes up to around 40%
of the total waste each year . Through recycled these
material, it can keep diminishing the resources of urban
aggregated. Therefore, natural aggregate can be used in
higher – grade applications.

• Save Energy

The recycling process can be done on site. This can save
energy to transport the recycled materials to the recycling
plants.

• Cost

The cost of recycled aggregate is cheaper than virgin
aggregate.
The transportation cost for the recycled aggregate is reduced
due to the weight of recycled aggregate is lighter than virgin
aggregate.
Contd....
• Job Opportunities
There will be many people involved in this new technology,
such as specialized and skilled persons, general workers,
drivers etc.

• Market is Wide
The markets for recycled concrete aggregate are wide.
Recycled concrete aggregate can be used for
bridge substructures and superstructures, sidewalks etc.
Disadvantages
Although there are many advantages of using
recycled aggregate. But there are still some
disadvantages in recycled aggregate.

• Lack of Specification and Guidelines

• Water Pollution
Recycling Technique
▪ Two-Stage Mixing Approach

▪ Mechanical Scrubbing
▪ Heated Scrubbing
• Two-Stage Mixing Approach
This mixing process is divided into two parts.
During the first stage of mixing, it uses half of the
required water for mixing leading to the formation
of a thin layer of cement slurry on the surface of RA
which will permeate into the porous old cement
mortar, filling up the old cracks and voids.
At the second stage of mixing, the remaining
water is added to complete the concrete mixing
process.
• Mechanical Scrubbing
In this concrete rubbles are scrubbed by one
another using an eccentric tubular vertical mill to
produce recycled coarse aggregate by removing
adhering cement paste.
Fine aggregate is then
produced similarly
from the recycled
aggregate.
• Heated Scrubbing
In this concrete rubbles is charged in a heating
furnace and subjected to hot air to make cement
paste brittle and weak.
It is then scrubbed in a mill to separate cement
paste from aggregate.
