A social network is a structure made up of individuals, organizations, and companies connected to each other. Social media allows social network users to interact through pictures, videos, and audio. Social networking began in 1969 with the first commercial internet service provider and expanded in the 1990s with services like AOL Instant Messenger and Geocities that allowed users to chat and create websites. Popular sites like Google, Facebook, and Wikipedia then launched and grew social networking further by connecting large numbers of users. Both opportunities and risks exist with social networking as it enables new connections but also false information and cybercrime.
