1. Where do you get your identity from?
Jesus First Peter Glazebrook
For God’s glory …
… His pleasure …
… and our joy.
“God is most glorified in
us when we are most
satisfied in him.”
John Piper
2. Jesus First[3/9]
‘It’s not what you do’
Genesis 1:27 God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
3. You are …
• A person … a human being
• A child of God … a follower of Jesus
4. Growing up into maturity
Who you are in Christ
Worship as all of life
How we are together
Where we are going
5. You are a child of God
• In Christ you are accepted
• In Christ you are secure
• In Christ you are significant
6. 2 Corinthians 5: 17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new
creation. The old has passed away; behold, the
new has come.
7. You are Accepted
Yet to all who did receive him, to those who
believed in his name, he gave the right to
become children of God [John 1:12 ]
I no longer call you servants ... Instead,
I have called you friends … [John 15:15 ]
Therefore, since we have been justified through
faith, we have peace with God through our Lord
Jesus Christ [Romans 5:1]
8. You are Accepted
But whoever is united with the Lord
is one with him in spirit [1 Corinthians 6:17]
Do you not know that your bodies are temples of
the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have
received from God? You are not your own; you
were bought at a price. [1 Corinthians 6: 19-20]
Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of
you is a part of it. [1 Corinthians 12: 27]
9. You are Accepted
To the saints who are in Ephesus, and are faithful
in Christ Jesus. [Ephesians 1:1]
In love he predestined us for adoption as sons
through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of
his will. [Ephesians 1: 5]
For through him we both have access in one
Spirit to the Father. [Ephesians 2: 18]
10. You are Accepted
He has delivered us from the domain of darkness
and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved
Son, in whom we have redemption, the
forgiveness of sins. [Colossians 1: 14]
For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in
bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought
to fullness. [Colossians 2: 10]
11. You are Accepted
Therefore, you are accepted by God ...
… and acceptable to others !
But how do you know if you really believe this?
Are you offended, attribute motive & judge
others?
Are you free from ‘the fear of man’?
The Question we are asking during this section of the our’ Jesus First’ series is ‘Where do you get your identity from ?’Please listen to the previous two installments if you have not already been here or heard them.Peter GlazebrookProud holder of 10 different World records.I’m not saying that Peter gets his identity from vegetables … but I could not find anything on record that was not vegetable related.
We were created in God’s image to reflect his glory by living out our purpose and experiencing joy.But instead of finding our identity in God, humanity has found identity in other placesTypically through some combination of Current activity, Past history, or Relationships with others. So, in answer to the question ‘Who are you?’The first thing to say is … you are not what you do!
Theseattirbutes are what is missing in the worldPeople deal with rejection, fear and a lack of purpose or direction
According to the first book in the Bible, Genesis when humanity was created by God we experienced AcceptanceSecurity SignificanceAll of these things were lost when we rebelledSince then we have experiencedRejectionFearLack of purposeIN Christ all of these are restoredWhen I became a Christian aged 19 it was the followed by the hardest 12 months of my life and the since then, There has been glory, joy and the best years and the biggest chanllenges + a faithful God.
But you may not feel like it
Child of GodFriendJustified, made righteous, become acceptable
In Christ, You are accepted!
That means you are accepted by God, and consequently acceptable to others! It is one thing to say that you understand this, you agree with it, and you believe it.But do you … do you really? We cannot grow beyond what we believe. Here are two tests to see if you really have got hold of what God says here:FirstlyFreedom from taking offence and judging others … this is the essence of legalism.Ie we consider others are not acceptable to usJesus was very heavy and hard on legalismSomebody does something that offends you, you attribute a motivation to it and then act in a certain way towards them. Most Soaps trade very heavily on this sort of thing … misunderstandingsSecondlyBecause we want acceptance from others, we want to be liked we tend to shape our behaviour to gain acceptance. This is the fear of manAntidote is the fear of God … not the craven terror of an uncontrollable monster
