21. Reducing workforce numbers without
subjugating employees to acute anguish is an
arduous challenge for the best of companies.
Tata Steel has shown there is a humane way of
doing this. The company had rolled out a series of
voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) and early
separation scheme (ESS), starting from 1993-94
and had reduced employee strength from 78,000
during 1993-1994 to 43,000(in 2003), again to only
40,000 employees in 2003 itself.

22. "The reason our ESS has not caused
bitterness is that, before we actually did it, we
spent nearly a year communicating the
necessity of reducing our numbers," says Mr
Mahanty J. J. Irani(MD,TATA STEEL), while
speaking to a big union gathering said “ If we
don't change, this company will shut down.
Then neither you nor I will have a job”. To
this, the union also agreed to the (ESS)
decisions taken by TATA STEEL

24. Jet airways
• India's largest private airline Jet Airways has laid
off 800 employees as it cuts flights amid soaring
costs. Jet Airways has decided to lay off 1,100
additional employees in the next few days. They
also suspended its expansion program, by
reducing flights. This is because of a slowdown in
demand due to high ticket value.
• Hundreds of the airline's staff gathered in uniform
in Mumbai to protest at being sacked.
• To this Jet Airways had nothing to say. They only
said “It’s alliance with Kingfisher Airlines had
nothing to do with the job cuts.”
