1. Harmonization and cross-program learning
Irmgard Hoeschle-Zeledon
International Institute of Tropical Agriculture
Africa RISING Program Learning Event
5 – 8 February 2019
Lilongwe, Malawi
2. Africa RISING phase 2
• Program character enhanced to maximize harmonization for synergies and
enhanced cross-scaling and dissemination of research outputs
program-wide meta analyses
common research questions
cross-program CoPs suspended
cross-program learning (annual learning event)
program communication and knowledge sharing
3. PCT charged Project Managers and Chief Scientists to
come up with suggestions for further harmonization
Common publications
- AR processes and experiences and lessons (KM)
- Cross-country watershed mgmt. experiences (FK, BZ, LD)
- Program-wide livestock research
- Inter-cropping vs rotations (SS)
- Approaches, challenges, solutions to scaling (Million, HS, MS)
Science quality
- Common biometrics support
- Standardized research methods
- Internal body for checking science across regions/peer review, sharing of
- Protocols
- Science week
- Writeshops
- Cross-program external evaluation
4. Study on strategies for engagement of development partners
and private sector
- Common ground, what has worked, experiences
- ToRs by Chief Scientists, a quick win by March 2019

5. • feasibility to measure the Human and Environment domain indicators?
• is it at all feasible to use the same indictors?
• task force to establish appropriate data sets at gold, silver, bronze
standard, checking
terminology (indicators, metrics, methods)
• how do we define “technology”?
6. SI domain stewards
A subject matter specialist for each project and domain to:
- facilitate application of SIAF
- develop minimum data sets
- identify opportunities for cross-site analyses
- support team in reporting results
- review WPs related to the target domain
- monitor program-wide implementation of SIAF and identify issues
- facilitate linkages to other projects applying SIAF
No final decision made, under discussion, views welcome
RHoMIS
Rural household multi-indicator survey, applied by ET, opportunity for meta analysis
Further discussion needed
