The Effect of Being Late or Absent on the
Students’ Performance in Regional
Science High School – X
2. Abstract
Regional Science High School – X is known to be
one of the most prestigious secondary school here in
Cagayan de Oro City. Selected students were asked about
their grades and how often they come late or absent.
From the data gathered, the researchers calculated for
the Pearson’s r and got a result of low and inverse
correlation. The result implies that low number of days
that a student is late or absent results to a high
performance level. The researchers also recommend the
students in Regional Science High School to avoid being
late or absent so that the students will avoid in being a
candidate for disqualification.
3. Problem of the Study
Does being late or
absent affect the
students’ performance
in Regional Science
High School?
4. Hypotheses
Ha. Being late or absent affects
the students’ performance in
Regional Science High School - X.
Ho. Being late or absent does not
affect the students’ performance in
Regional Science High School - X.
5. Methodology
The researchers used the Pearson’s r as the
statistical tool to get the correlation of the two given
variables. Descriptive research is the most applicable
type of research to be used to this kind of study.
The researchers conducted the said study in the
school Regional Science High School. The researchers
chose twenty (20) students to be used as a sample for
this study. The researchers gave questionnaires to the
students to be answered to make it easier than asking the
students one-on-one. The researchers computed the
given data thru Pearson’s r because it is the appropriate
statistical tool to be used.

10. Findings
Based on this study, the researchers found out
that being late or absent leads to a low
performance level which will also lead the
students to disqualification. This is because in
Regional Science High School – X, late students
will be going to the library instead of entering
the respective classrooms of these students
then the students will miss some activities and
participation, for participation is one of the
criteria in grading the students.
11. Conclusion
With the computed value of r = -0.10, which
means that there is an inverse and low
correlation between the number of days a
student is late and the student’s
performance. The implication of an inverse
association means that high number of days
that a student arrive late or absent results to
a low level of performance. Otherwise, low
number of days a student is late or absent
results to a high performance level.
12. Recommendation
From the result gathered it is therefore
endorsed by the researchers that the
students must prevail from being late or
absent because this affects the
performance of students in school. The
said recommendation of the researchers
will also help the students avoid in
being a candidate for disqualification.
