Sound research and conventions.
1. Research in to what music stereotypically goes into what
genre and why.
2. Rock music is a form of popular music which evolved from rock and roll and pop
music during the mid and late 1960s. Harsher and often self-consciously more
serious than its predecessors, it was initially characterized by musical
experimentation and drug-related or anti-establishment lyrics.
Rock music can be seen in many film genres, often not all throughout as a main
theme, but it is used in segments so show furry and raw anger and emotion.
As a main theme it can be found in musicals, such as “school of rock” and “we will
rock you”
Examples in films-
Guns and roses - welcome to the jungle - “Megamind”: this song is used when the
two super villains start to fight. Conventionally, when two characters start to fight
or there is about to be some kind of confrontation rock music is used to
exaggerate the mood as it connotes feelings of rebellion and braking free.
Led Zeppelin – Immigrant song – “Shrek”: used in a contrapuntal way, as the
scene start with a princess sing in a high pitched voice, surrounded by sweet little
birds. As the song kicks in, the rock anthem stars, allowing the audience to
recognise that a fight scene is about to happen.
AD/DC – Shoot to thrill – “The Avengers”: this example shows have music can be
linked to a character as well as the temperament of the scene because as Tony
Stark arrives to the fight this starts to play. Thought the series of films, when ever
he does something cool, this genre of music plays.
3. Classical music is a serious type of music following long-established
principles rather than a folk, jazz, or popular tradition.
When classical music is used, especial at the start, it sets the tone for the
whole film. Often used in high intensity, serious, calm scenes to add tension
or to extenuate it’s beauty. Most of the time, in the genre of film that I watch,
it is used as a contrapuntal tool or as a dance sound track diegetic to the
scene.
Forest Gump: classical tracks are used in Forest Gump to tell the audience
when to feel sorry for the character, as at several point you are laughing with
him, the soft sad tones indicate to the viewer when to be emotional.
Lord of the rings-two towers: the scores in the lord of the rings are not only
classic, by classical. After hearing the first few notes you can intently
recognise where it comes from, and brings you right back to the emotion you
felt while watching the film.
4. Pop music is the genre of popular music that produces the most hits. A hit is
a song that sells many copies, and the latest hits are listed every week on the
charts. To get on the charts, a song must be released as a single, although
most singles are also released on an album. Songs that become hits almost
always share certain features that are sometimes called the pop-music
formula. They have a good rhythm, a catchy melody, and are easy to
remember and sing along to. They usually have a chorus that's repeated
several times and two or more verses. Most pop songs are between two and
five minutes long, and the lyrics are usually about the joys and problems of
love and relationships.
I think pop music is put in movies to help make it an iconic moment for both
the song and movie. Films use it to show that a character is happy or to
create an over all joyful mood.
