12. School Sample: Terrorist Attack on Averitt Introduction This project was part of a class assignment for my transportation security class. The aim of the project was to plan a theoretical attack on a shipping facility of our choice; detailing everything we were able to find out about the facility and a step by step plan of the attack.
13. History of Averitt In 1958, Thurman Averitt founded Livingston Merchant's Co-op, a small trucking company that hauled dry goods mostly between Nashville, TN and Livingston, TN. Thurman would become acquainted with a young man named Gary Sasser. Sasser purchased the company from Thurman. Which at the time only consisted of 3 associates, 5 trailers and 3 tractors. Averitt has grown to become one of the United States leading freight transportation companies
15. The Complex The complex is partially isolated The shipping facility is comprised of: Three story office building Parking lot Docking area Security checkpoint
16. Security Vulnerabilities Only two to three security officers on duty in the evening. A structurally weak and lightly guarded security checkpoint. A 7 foot high metal fence. No defensible space.
18. Phase 1 At 2:30 in the morning a stolen Averitt truck will begin its one mile drive toward the security checkpoint. Around the same time the two man squad will be getting into position with their sniper rifle.
19. Phase 2 The truck will enter the facility and park in the docking area with all of the other trucks. The team will split into two teams again. Team 2 will begin attaching bombs to the underside of all of the docked semi-trucks.
20. Phase 2… After both are finished team 2 will regroup with team 1 in the office building. They will detonate all of the bombs destroying most of the facility.
21. The Aftermath A significant loss of life and equipment. Potential lawsuits by the families of those workers. Other freight companies with better security will look to take Averitt’s place in transporting goods. Averitt’s reputation as safe and secure freight company will suffer. Their security practices would come under serious question and criticism. Other companies would tighten security on their respective facilities.
22. What could have been done better? Stronger and Taller metal fences with barbed wire. More security cameras posted on the exterior fence. Flood lights on the surrounding area outside the complex. More security personnel during evening hours. Reinforced security checkpoint.
