Powershell DSC is the future of configuration management on Windows but it can be very frustrating when it fails, especially in Azure. In this session we will explore how to deploy configurations to windows servers using Azure Automation and DSC. We will go over the concepts involved and have a walk through of getting a DSC configuration to apply to a set of virtual machines. We will take a demo configuration with multiple dependencies and deploy that to a Windows Virtual Machine in Azure – we will examine what happens at each step and show you how to troubleshoot it if and when your deployment fails.

Choosing a strategy lets you codify your deployment patterns in a repeatable manner and reuse them over hundreds of deployments without incurring unnecessary cost and complexity. Using Atlassian’s PaaS as a model, we will discuss important milestones as you scale from a single container to tens, hundreds, and eventually to a thousand containers. At what points should you begin to embrace log aggregation? How about monitoring and metrics collection? Orchestration and clustering solutions? Learn how to incorporate ever more sophisticated third-party solutions as you go, to achieve cost-effective and stable management of your containers in production.

In your ever-changing Infrastructure, some changes are intentional while others are not. Drift is what happens whenever the real-world state of your infrastructure differs from the state defined in your configuration. This can happen for many reasons, sometimes it happens when adding or removing resources, other times when changing resource definitions upon resource termination or failure, and even when changes have been made manually or via other automation tools. While Terraform itself can detect drifts, in most cases, you will be informed about it too late: just before you are about to deploy new changes to your infrastructure. What’s interesting about Terraform though, is that you can apply changes in two separate and distinct steps of “Planning” and “Applying”. This means that you have full visibility of what Terraform is planning on doing beforehand, and if you are satisfied with the changes, you can choose to apply them. So how does this work? When something is changed intentionally, it will appear in the source code, and the Terraform plan will not do anything. However, if any part of the infrastructure has been changed manually, Terraform’s plan will identify this, and alert you to the change. In other words, if your IaC drifted from its expected state, then Terraform’s plan will, in fact, detect it. Applying this simple solution can empower DevOps and developer velocity, with the reassurance and context for unexpected changes in your IaC, in near real-time. This talk will showcase real-world examples, and practical ways to apply this in your production environments while doing so safely and at the pace of your engineering cycles.

This isn’t the dark ages any more. You’ve learned that you need to put your database in source control and you’re competent with source control systems like TFS or Git. You’ve also learned how to express your database in script form using a tool like SSDT, Flyway or Redgate. However, you still haven’t written as many automated tests as you know you should and you aren’t convinced you’re going about it the right way. You haven’t really looked at the build functionality in VSTS yet or gotten to grips with build servers like TeamCity or Jenkins, and even if you have you aren’t sure how the process should work for SQL Server builds and tests. In this session I’ll explain how to use tSQLt to build a suite of automated tests to give you confidence in the quality of your code. Then I’ll talk through various ways to automate your database builds and run those tests on some schedule or trigger. I’ll also discuss the pros and cons of various different approaches so that you can understand which approach would suit your teams and projects.

Data spaces in distributed environments should be allowed to evolve in agile ways providing data space owners with large flexibility about which data they store. Agility and heterogeneity, however, jeopardize data exchanges because representations may build on varying ontologies and data consumers may not rely on the semantic correctness of their queries in the context of semantically heterogeneous, evolving data spaces. Graph data spaces are one example of a powerful model for representing and querying data whose semantics may change over time. To assert and enforce conditions on individual graph data spaces, shape languages (e.g SHACL) have been developed. We investigate the question of how querying and programming can be guarded by reasoning over SHACL constraints in a distributed setting and we sketch a picture of how a future landscape based on semantically heterogeneous data spaces might look like.
