1. BrightStarLife Skills - A Summary
Can we only rely on the government and politicians to govern this country? What are
our responsibilities? BrightStar's main objective is to develop and provide modular
mentoring and training to all communities and as such, socially- and spiritually active
citizens who will get involved in their communities .
Module 1: Brilliant Self
The first module begins with the topic, Responsibility.
The question is asked: "Who is responsible for or in control of your life, your thoughts
and what you do every day?"
Module 1 's topics:
Responsibility, Values, Life Purpose, Self-worth and priorities.
Because the respondents' background and education are very different, it means that
every issue needs to be discussed very extensively to be understood by all the
respondents. The illiterate respondents, as well as others with education in different
phases. Emphasis is on respondents' values and to take responsibility for their own
lives with a positive outlook on life and with hope.
Module 2 : Brilliant Relationships
Module 2 's topics:
LEMON, Emotional mastery, Communication, Conflict resolution, Be yourself.
The LEMON slices allow respondents to realize that everyone is different. Every
person is uniquely made. People act differently and their methods of work are
different. Therefore people don’t always agree on everything and misunderstandings
and disagreements may sneak in. With the necessary background knowledge
respondents can make informed decisions with the new knowledge about themselves
and others.
Emotional mastery is very important in a society where emotions are being lived.
The natural instinct in humans is fight or flight, and for many in the community it
means fighting. It is a natural instinct to survive in difficult circumstances. These
emotional outbursts are loud and visibly lived on streets and in their houses. There
are five steps to the discipline of " think - before-you - do": Stop - take a deep
breath, grab - one or more of your values, think - if my actions are going to be good
or bad, do - ask yourself whether you're going to act right, balance - fill your
happiness bucket first – it needs to be heavier than the sad bucket holding negative
experiences.
The following two topics in module 2 are communication and conflict management
.
2. The five keys to good communication:
1. A good self-esteem - I'm a diamond
2. Build someone else's self-esteem - Respect
3. Listen to others with understanding - with attention
4. Speak clearly - understandable
5. Use clear body language
Be yourself, is the fifth topic of module two. How does a respondent stay positive in
difficult circumstances? There are three ways to sustain yourself: Know your
values and life purpose and live it. “Say no to people who want to undermine you
and be with people who appreciated you for who you are”.
Module 3: Brilliant Leadership
In module 3 the topics are as follows: Planner, Role model, Team Builder,
Motivator, Enabler. We are often satisfied with mediocrity or even, just good
enough. Yet we are all uniquely made with at least one skill that no one else has.
A skill in which a person can perform above average or even brilliantly. With our
unique program, BrightStar, we want to encourage people to start thinking and
living beyond mediocrity. Live in Excellence! To live in excellence is not easy and
it requires hard work and perseverance.
"Great leaders strive to motivate and to empower people to achieve their purpose in
life."
"Excellent leadership is to influence people, equip and guide people to where they
they agreed to go and have the potential to go." (BrightStar textbook p 124)
Planner: A planner knows exactly how to plan a successful project.
Role model: a wonderful example for all, and a person who is respected. Therefore
people will follow.
Team Builder: The team builder knows what skills are needed in a team to run a
successful project.
Motivator: Know how to motivate the team to achieve their goal.
Enabler: This excellent leader knows how to empower each member of the team to
be brilliant leaders themselves.
These characteristics are not only applicable in the business world, but in a
community, a school, on the sports field and in a church. These features are
especially important for parents. A parent should be a brilliant leader for his / her
children every day. A parent or a mother from the disadvantaged communities, are
facing many challenges every day.
A parent need all the abovementioned leadership qualities to lead his / her
children to live their lives in excellence as adults.
