Our Saviour's Voice Helps With Holiday Regrets
1. Our Saviour’s Voice
Our Saviour Lutheran Church, 120 S. Henry Street, Green Bay, Wisconsin, 54302

January 2014
This Article Is For You If You Have Holiday Seasonal-Regrets
“Excuse Me Boss, I Am Going To Need To Take Some Time Off To Recover From The Holidays”
We are slowly moving from groaning to giggling.
Stick with us here.
By the time the ink dries on this edition of the
Voice, it will be late December. You may not
read this until January. By then, the checking
account, the charge account and the calorie
account may all be over charged. For many, the
wallet now fits in the pocket
but the pants don’t fit on
the hips.
Now we know why they invented New Year’s
Resolutions! They knew we’d need a little
help. What timing!
Our sometimes over-celebration at Christmas
and New Year’s reminds me of a line from
the television series, M*A*S*H. Klinger once
said, “I need to take a furlough to recover from
my R and R”.
Somewhere here, we need
to giggle a bit.
About calorie spending, the desserts, treats and
sweets throughout the entire month of December
– Oh my!
Hang on, January is coming!
We like fresh starts, a clean slate, a remodeling
job. We like “new”.
Somehow, almost by their own power, they
leaped off the serving tray onto our plates and
instantly disappeared. We could not believe it, so
we tried the experiment again, and sure enough,
it repeated itself for an entire month. The
disappearing
experiment has been
replaced by the
appearance of
groaning and regret.
These too, have a
power of their own.
It’s a short walk from pleasure to pain.
So does God.
Enter Stage Right - II Corinthians 5:17-18:
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new
creation. The old has passed away; behold, the
new has come. All this is from God, who
through Christ reconciled us to Himself and gave
us the ministry of reconciliation.
Those two verses say a lot about the deep
meaning of Christmas, as well as life after the
cash and calorie debt of December. There is hope,
big strong healing hope!
With money-spending, perhaps we got slack
there too; we let our guard down. The deals
at the stores? Why, we saved so much money we
don’t have any left! Let’s avoid that experiment
again! The groaning continues.
Cash and calories debt.
Here is the sequence of sin’s path and its domino
effect…
(continued on page 2)
1
2. street, it is designed to keep us on the straight
and narrow, to alarm us when we are
leaving the ‘Path of Righteousness’. The
Conscience is there to guide us from hurting
God, others and ourselves. But temptation,
calling from the other side of the curb can be
so magnetic, and we can be so weak, that we
jump that curb and hurt ourselves, others
and God. That is called ‘Sin’. Some ancient
writers describe sin as ‘a self-inflicted
wound’. When we sin, crossing that curb, we
hurt ourselves. As is often said, “The
mouse sees the cheese but not the trap.”
(continued from page 1)
Sin [Crossing a Divine boundary] ignites
Conscience ignites Regret ignites Guilt ignites
Shame ignites Fear ignites God’s Compassion
ignites God’s Delivery of Grace
Let’s talk about seven words –
1. Sin - The dictionary says: An immoral act
considered to be a transgression against
divine law.
2. Conscience - The dictionary says: An inner
feeling or voice viewed as acting as a guide to
the rightness or wrongness of one's behavior.
When we awaken to this, we have regret. The
bad decision [sin] affects everything…body,
mind, heart and soul. From reckless spending of
money, to mindless eating, to wasting of time, to
abusing relationships or whatever, these harm us
and others.
3. Regret - The dictionary says: Feel sad,
repentant, or disappointed over something that has
happened or been done, esp. a loss or missed
opportunity.
Regret is followed by Guilt and Shame. Shame is
so toxic, it convinces us to go hide; to wallow in
self-pity; self-hatred; it stirs a disharmony with
self, God and others; and that often [unknown to
us] displays itself in anger, bitterness, grumpiness and melancholy moods. Did someone
mention depression?
4. Guilt - The dictionary says: A feeling of having
done wrong or failed in an obligation.
5. Shame - The dictionary says: A painful feeling
of humiliation or distress caused by the
consciousness of wrong or foolish behavior.
Sin takes us captive and we cannot get out.
Neither can the mouse with a mouthful of
cheese. He has a spring loaded weight on his
neck. That mouse, if he is still alive and
can reason, regrets his decision and is ashamed
of himself in front of his fellow mice. Let’s say
that mouse was warned by the Lead Mouse to
stay away from that cheese, but he didn’t. Now
that little furry fellow has not only regret, but
guilt, shame and fear. That is a stretch, but it’s
clear enough for us to smell the cheese in the
metaphor.
6. Fear - The dictionary says: An unpleasant
emotion caused by the belief that someone or
something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a
threat.
7. Reconciliation - The dictionary says: Restore
friendly relations between
The sequence is like this…
Conscience Ignites Regret
If you can relate to our talk about the calorie
and cash debt of December, you know that
word ‘Regret’. But regret visits us over many
things in our past. We have regrets over
things we did and things we did not do. Regret
has a certain kind of mental, emotional
and spiritual pain. Would you agree?
Your Conscience is a gift from God. We
Lutherans often call it a ‘Curb’ Like on the
Well,
enough
about that.
Is there a
solution?
(continued on page 3)
2
3. And so, did we spend too much cash and calories in
December? Do we have regrets? The
Solution is the very thing we were to be celebrating in
December! Let’s celebrate it and
live in it today!
(continued from page 2)
Yes. Is it waiting for me in January? Yes. But is it
here, now, also? YES! The word for the day is
‘Reconciliation’. The dictionary says: Restore friendly
relations between. In our case, “Restore friendly
relations between us and God, between us and
ourselves, between us and others.
Christ lives, is present here and now, and, “The
Kingdom of God is within you” – Luke 17:21
Enjoy the journey. Walk with the Saviour. Know
where the curb is. Do your best with His help. Live in
His Grace today.
The Incarnation, where God became man, and the
subsequent delivery of His Grace, rescue, forgiveness
and restoration, is larger than we can ever grasp. In
Christ, God has come to show
us the error in our ‘curb jumping’, to teach us about
the lures of this world, to forgive us, to free us and to
walk with us in newness of life. This is the term,
Reconciliation, in the verse of at the top of this article.

HOW SHOULD WE THEN LIVE?
Classes begin January 8, 2014 (Wednesdays at 6pm and Sundays at 10:30am)
The idea of the project, How Should We Then
Live?, both as a film documentary and as a book,
was conceived in 1974 and completed in 1976. In
the Acknowledgements, Francis Schaeffer writes
about the idea behind the project: “Using my
study, over the past forty years, of Western
thought and culture as a base, we could attempt to
present the flow and development which have led
to twentieth-century thinking and, by so doing,
hope to show the essential answers.” The subtitle
is “The Rise and Decline of Western Thought and
Culture.” Starting from ancient Roman times,
tracing man’s development throughout the Middle
Ages, going to the Renaissance, Reformation, and
Enlightenment, he shows the steps which led to the
modern era.
(Review by Jacob Schriftman, Author of The C.S.
Lewis Book on the Bible: What the Greatest Christian
Writer Thought About the Greatest Book)
Those that participated in The Truth Project will find this series to be similarly thoughtprovoking as you develop a world-view. This series will expand our understanding of
how we got where we are politically, socially and culturally. No sign up necessary.

As friends of Green Bay Trinity Lutheran School, we ask for your support through our
annual fund appeal. Our school is governed and supported by an association of
Missouri Synod Lutheran churches. The mission of GBLSA is to provide a quality
education in a Christ-centered environment for all children within our community.
God has indeed blessed us with the school, a wonderful staff of Christian teachers, and
supportive congregations that value the importance of Christian education.
The school began with just six students in 2003 and has grown to a current enrollment
of 78 children in grades K-8. The school is fortunate to have an experienced faculty
and staff, involved parents, and caring congregations. Our cumulative test scores
exceed the 90th percentile in almost every area. We have an active athletics program
which includes volleyball, basketball, and running programs, and provide a quality
music program with opportunities to participate in band and choir. A high percentage
of graduating students continue their Christian education at NEW Lutheran High
School. In addition, the children learn the importance of showing God’s love to others
through programs like Friday Friends, and Scene 4:12, a youth-lead service team.
As board members, we are aware of the many benefits this school brings to our
churches, but we also know providing a quality education at an affordable and fair cost
is challenging. Our current student enrollment is at 78 students, and our annual budget
is close to $350,000, which equates to about $4,500 per child. We are able to cover
about 75% of the per student cost through tuition and church support of $1,625 each.
The remaining cost per student must be covered through charitable gifts and
fundraising activities which are supported by parents and friends of the school.
Please prayerfully consider a gift to help our school and its children succeed.
Complete and return the enclosed pledge card today. Monthly contributions can also
be made electronically through Thrivent’s Simply Giving program by visiting
www.thrivent.com/banking/simplygiving. Green Bay Trinity Lutheran is our school
and we must ensure it can continue. Thank you for your consideration. All
contributions are tax deductible.
